Attack of the zkEVMs! Crypto’s 10x moment

Crypto is currently languishing like the internet did in 1996 with slow speeds and few practical use cases, says Steve Newcomb, chief product officer of Matter Labs. But a major increase in bandwidth and security soon after saw the internet become a crucial part of daily life across the globe — and we’re right on the cusp of that happening for crypto in the next few months. “Nobody trusted their credit card on it and everybody thought it was a fad and there weren’t any use cases for it,” Newcomb explains.  “And then we had 10x moments in bandwidth and then SSL came, and HTPS where you got that lock — that was a 10x moment in trust. Suddenly in 2005 ecommerce just went through the roof.” Crypto’s ‘10x’ moment could finally be here, with zkSync’s Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible main...

California’s opening bid won’t solve the Colorado River crisis alone

“This is a step in the right direction,” Thomas Buschatzke, director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources told POLITICO. “We absolutely agree with the need to continue the discussions as proposed in the letter to keep moving forward in a positive manner.” Entrenched drought and decades of overuse have driven water levels at the river’s two main reservoirs precariously low, with levels at Glen Canyon Dam predicted to next year fall within a few feet of the point at which hydropower production would cease and the ability to deliver water downstream could be jeopardized. The federal Bureau of Reclamation has said that states need to conserve 2 million to 4 million acre feet next year just to head off a near-term disaster at the reservoirs. The offer outlined by California’s agricultural...

Muserk Launches AI-Enhanced Platform to Collect ‘Every Royalty Everywhere’

Muserk, a global rights management company which helps music and video rights holders collect royalties from digital platforms, has launched Music Connect, a publishing administration platform. The platform will be full-service, using Blue Matter — the company’s propriety AI — to help ease the notoriously complicated and messy royalty collection process for compositions. As CEO Paul Goldman puts it, “the music industry is a broken, outdated system that can’t keep up with the modern tech platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. Currently the music royalty process is a biased system that works in favor of the tech platforms while leaving modern day copyright owners at a huge disadvantage.” Streaming makes up 84% of U.S. music industry revenues, according to RIAA’s latest midyear report. Howeve...

Downtown-owned CD Baby and Soundrop Lay Off Employees, Citing ‘Economic Conditions’

CD Baby and Soundrop have both laid off employees, citing “economic conditions” and “uncertain times,” according to a company-wide email written by Downtown’s new chief people officer Love Whelchel on Oct. 5. Whelchel started at Downtown just last month. News of the layoffs was first published by Digital Music News. While the outlet reported that 30 employees were let go from the two companies, a spokesperson for CD Baby and Soundrop tells Billboard this figure is incorrect. It remains unclear how many people were laid off from the companies. News of these layoffs arrives about a week after parent company Downtown announced that it would be combining multiple of its businesses to consolidate and streamline its B2B operations under the new monicker Downtown Music. This new one-stop-shop wil...

Rex Orange County Charged With 6 Counts of Sexual Assault in the U.K.

British singer-songwriter Rex Orange County has been charged with six counts of sexual assault in his native U.K., Billboard has confirmed. The charges stem from an accusation that the artist (born Alexander O’Connor) twice assaulted a woman in the West End on June 1. That was allegedly followed by four additional assaults against the same woman the following day: once in a taxi and three more times at his home in London’s Notting Hill district. On Monday (Oct. 10), O’Connor denied all counts during an appearance at Southwark Crown Court in London. He has been set free on unconditional bail ahead of a provisional trial date on Jan. 3. The news was first reported by The Sun. “Alex is shocked by the allegations which he denies and looks forward to clearing his name in court,” said a represen...

Hurricane Ian traumatized Floridians. It also erased their nest eggs.

As climate change makes natural disasters more frequent and severe — and threatens the viability of living in much of the country — Ian offered new evidence that Americans’ retirement funds and assets are in jeopardy in vulnerable areas. “This is an enormous wealth shock,” said Benjamin Keys, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, who has researched the effects of climate-driven sea-level rise on Florida’s housing market. It’s a problem with no easy policy solutions. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates the government-controlled companies behind about half of the $12 trillion residential mortgage market, has begun assessing the risks that climate change poses to the mortgage and housing market. But it has historically allowed the Federal ...

Biden’s ‘unthinkable’ options for punishing OPEC

“There are a lot of alternatives and we haven’t made up our minds yet,” Biden told reporters Thursday. For now, the White House is pledging to work with Congress on a bill to allow the U.S. to sue oil cartels for antitrust violations, a step that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have threatened before but which the Biden administration has been wary of taking. “This is really the first time we have a president who’s supporting it with a Congress that looks likely to support it as well,” said Kevin Book, managing director of ClearView Energy Partners, a research firm. “What was previously unthinkable is no longer unthinkable.” Senate Democrats are weighing action, too. “We are looking at all the legislative tools to best deal with this appalling and deeply cynical action,” Majority Le...
