SG Lewis’ New Double-Single Was Inspired By Daft Punk’s “Discovery”: Listen

Disco darling SG Lewis has returned with the music industry’s equivalent of a double feature: a banging double A-side single. Marking his debut on dance music industry heavyweight Astralwerks, “Missing You” and “Something About Your Love” are out now. According to Lewis, the two tracks are an ode to 70s and 80s club music, evolving the disco themes of his debut album, times, into the next era of dancefloor movers and shakers. The resulting effect is comforting and nostalgic yet stirringly emphatic, composed of gilded synthwave melodies and glistening sound design. And by acting as each others’ tonal foils, they together capture the ethos of a modern Molly Ringwald, dancing the end of a movie away under a disco ball at prom.  Then there are the ...

Researcher Documents Climate Change Effects By Transcribing Ambient Sounds of Glaciers

Artists and researchers alike are learning that climate change can not only be seen, but also heard. Enter Ugo Nanni, a researcher from the University of Oslo with an affinity for transcribing natural phenomena into sound. Using a seismometer, Nanni sought to better understand the melting patterns of the Kongsvegen glacier in Svalbard, a landmark roughly 800 miles north of Norway. When ice melts and ultimately breaks, it creates vibrations which may be detected by a seismometer. As one might imagine, these particular frequencies are normally inaudible, registering between 1-100 HZ, but Nanni leveraged some post-processing magic so we could hear the glaciers for ourselves. Ugo Nanni, a researcher from the University of Oslo, used a seismometer to record and process the ambien...

Netflix’s Resident Evil TV Adaptation Stumbles by Serving Two Timelines: Review

The Pitch: Taking on a new installment in the sprawling Resident Evil media franchise is a daunting task. With such a rich backstory to pull from, Netflix’s new live-action series, simply titled Resident Evil, centers around one of the franchise’s most memorable villains, Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick), while creating a new set of characters around him. In 2022, Wesker moves his twin teenage daughters Jade (Tamara Smart) and Billie (Siena Agudong) to the sterile corporate housing of New Raccoon City to be closer to his work for the nefarious Umbrella Corporation ...

Judge Says NBA Youngboy Lyrics Can’t Be Used as Evidence as L.A. Gun Possession Trial Begins

Youngboy Never Broke Again (a.k.a. NBA Youngboy) scored a major victory on the opening day of his Los Angeles trial for firearms possession on Tuesday (July 12), with the judge ruling to exclude the use of the rapper’s lyrics as evidence, defense attorneys confirmed to Billboard. The decision by U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner means prosecutors won’t be able to use lyrics from three Youngboy songs — “Lonely Child,” “Life Support” and “Gunsmoke” — to help convict the rapper (born Kentrell Gaulden), who’s charged with possession of a firearm after he was discovered with a loaded FNX-45 gun during a traffic stop in Tarzana, California on March 22, 2021. Among other lines, prosecutors had argued that the lyric “FN, Glock, MAC-10s” from “Gunsmoke” demonstrates the rapper’s “familiarity and...

Twitter Sues Elon Musk to Force Him to Complete $44B Acquisition

Twitter sued Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday, trying to force him to complete his $44 billion takeover of the social media company by accusing him of “outlandish” and “bad faith” actions that have caused the platform irreparable harm and “wreaked havoc” on its stock price. Back in April, Musk pledged to pay $54.20 a share for Twitter, which agreed to those terms after reversing its initial opposition to the deal. But the two sides have been bracing for a legal fight since the billionaire said Friday that he was backing away from his agreement to buy the company. Twitter’s lawsuit opens with a sharply-worded accusation: “Musk refuses to honor his obligations to Twitter and its stockholders because the deal he signed no longer serves his personal interests.” “Having mounted a public spectacle...
