A Celebration of Life: Remembering Chef Joe Miller

An impassioned team of some of L.A.’s top chefs converged on Jill Davies’ The Mar Vista on Monday night to celebrate the life of visionary chef Joe Miller, who passed away at the end of October at the age of 60. Miller opened the Michelin awarded Joe’s Restaurant in September 1991 and established himself as one of the best chefs in the country. Consistently rated by the Zagat Survey as a top 10 restaurant in Los Angeles, it’s served Santa Monica and the Abbot Kinney area of Venice for 24 years. Joe’s Restaurant first opened in 1991, a landmark on Abbot Kinney in Venice, receiving rave reviews throughout its 24-year history. He grew the business from a small neighborhood restaurant to an award-winning, Michelin-starred restaurant and  was a launching pad for many of the chefs in...

Instant Pot Leftover Hambone Soup

The best way to use up leftover ham! With the most flavorful broth, this hearty, cozy soup is so simple yet SO SO GOOD. I honestly look forward to the leftover ham more so than the holiday ham itself. I just get so excited to repurpose the leftovers, whether that’s in some ham and cheese drop biscuits, baked ham and cheese croissants, or this hambone soup. Yes, hambone soup is one of my all-time holiday favorites. I didn’t even know you could use your leftover hambone until 2013! Since then, I have been making this stovetop version every. single. year. It’s cozy, it’s hearty, and it’s loaded with so many hearty veggies (another great way to use up your holiday leftovers!) to complement the sweet chunks of ham. It is perfection. And now you can make it right in...

Alley in the Valley: Panorama City’s Plaza del Valle

It’s just minutes past noon but already the San Fernando Valley sun blinds rather than illuminates, giving the air a strange, pearly yellow sheen. The heat is immobilizing and yet the line outside the Taqueria Jerez restaurant in Panorama City’s Plaza del Valle only seems to grow. Every table in the outdoor seating area is taken and those waiting for orders at the popular restaurant stand patiently under slivers of nearby shade sails. Two men in cowboy hats and Wrangler jeans come by to serenade diners with guitar music.  Poncho’s Cemita Atomica (Courtesy Poncho’s Taqueria) The scene is typical for Plaza del Valle, a lively “community plaza” that feels like a mini Valley mash-up of Olvera Street and Santee Alley, minus the oppressive crowds. Filled with small food stalls, cloth...

Following its Christmas in July event, Christmas-inspired pop-up Blitzen’s gives Here and Now another merry makeover. The bar in downtown’s Arts District, which opened last year, features seasonal drinks that are a nod to both Christmas and Hanukkah — and a little Mean Girls, too — with names like You Go Glenn Cocoa (hot chocolate, rum, chartreuse, Mr. Black), Get Blitzen’d (tequila, fino, sweet vermouth, lemon, falernum, prosecco) and Put on Your Yarmulke (Monkey Shoulder, Manischewitz, grapefruit cordial, allspice dram, aquafaba, lime and bitters). Africa Roundup: Nigerian fintech gets $360M, mints unicorn, draws Chinese VC

November 2019 could mark when Nigeria (arguably) became Africa’s unofficial capital for fintech investment and digital finance startups. The month saw $360 million invested in Nigerian focused payment ventures. That is equivalent to roughly one-third of all the startup VC raised for the entire continent in 2018, according to Partech stats. A notable trend-within-the-trend is that more than half — or $170 million — of the funding to Nigerian fintech ventures in November came from Chinese investors. This marks a pivot in China’s engagement with Africa to tech. We’ll get to that. Before the big Chinese backed rounds, one of Nigeria’s earliest fintech companies, Interswitch, confirmed its $1 billion valuation after Visa took a minority stake in the company. Interswitch ...
