  • Adapted from Uoto’s 2018 sports manga, the film is directed by Kenji Iwaisawa, the film uses rotoscoping to depict intense, physical running sequences

Netflix has announced streaming rights for the 100 METERS anime film.

An adaptation of the 2018 sports manga by Uoto, known for the critically acclaimed Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, the film first debuted at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June before receiving an official theatrical release in Japan in September. Despite its limited release, 100 METERS has received positive critical reception, with Annecy festival goers lauding it for its gripping story and compelling delivery.

Produced by studio Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain and directed by Kenji Iwaisawa, the film stands out for its unique visual style, utilizing rotoscoping, where animation is traced over live-action footage to create dazzlingly detailed and intensely physical running sequences.

The trailer provides a glimpse into the story’s core conflict: the complex rivalry between dual protagonists, Togashi and Komiya. Togashi, voiced by Tôri Matsuzaka in his adult years, is a naturally gifted sprinter who initially lacks meaningful motivation. He crosses paths with Komiya (voiced by Shôta Sometani), a withdrawn transfer student who is full of determination but lacks technique.

The story spans over 15 years, tracking their growth from childhood prodigies and aspiring runners to seasoned rivals, using the 100-meter dash as a metaphor for an existential struggle over purpose and identity. The trailer highlights the emotional stakes, with dialogue about how “life is always full of possibilities of losing” and how “some people have their lives ruined by just 100 meters”, all set to the propulsive score by renowned composer Hiroaki Tsutsumi.

Watch the trailer above. 100 METERS is set to arrive on Netflix on December 31, 2025.
