The upcoming live-action Minecraft film doesn’t arrive until April, but the first preview of its soundtrack arrived this week with the original song “I Feel Alive.” A Minecraft Movie cast member Jack Black takes the lead vocals, with drums provided by none other than Dave Grohl.
The ’80s-inspired rock song was written by Black alongside veteran songwriters and producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who’ve crafted the soundtracks to films like Barbie, A Star Is Born, and more (Wyatt is also the lead vocalist of the indie band Miike Snow). Fellow cast member Danielle Brooks also lends vocals, while the guitar is courtesy of longtime Queens of the Stone Age member Troy Van Leeuwen.
The Grohl x Black combination marks their latest collaboration, as the two have often teamed up on performances and projects from Black’s band Tenacious D. Grohl played drums on Tenacious D’s 2001 self-titled debut as well as on the entirety their 2018 album Post-Apocalyptico. Grohl has also sat in with the band on multiple occasions, including a whirlwind rendition of Tenacious D’s “The Metal” in 2010 — which we named as one of Grohl’s best-ever drum performances. Black and Grohl most recently teamed up for a 2022 Hanukkah Sessions cover of “The Spirit of Radio” by Rush.

Black has been in actor mode so far this year, and is set to support A Minecraft Movie by hosting Saturday Night Live on April 5th. Regarding Tenacious D, they appear to still be on hiatus after bandmate Kyle Gass joked about the attempted Trump assassination last summer and Black canceled their remaining tour dates. However, Black has assured Tenacious D fans that in time, they’ll “be back.”
