Gary “Mani” Mounfield, legendary bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, was honored during a memorial service held in Manchester on Monday.
A number of Mani’s musical contemporaries attended the ceremony at Manchester Cathedral, including former bandmates Ian Brown, Bobby Gillespie, John Squire, Alan “Reni” Wren, and Andrew Innes, as well as Liam Gallagher and Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs of Oasis, Mike Joyce of The Smiths, Peter Hook of New Order, and Mark “Bez” Berry of The Happy Mondays. Footballers Sir David Beckham and Gary Neville also paid their respects.
A broadcast of the service was also shown outside for fans gathered beyond the cathedral, who erupted into applause as a congregation that included Brown, Squire, Gillespie, Wren, Innes, and Gallagher helped carry Mani’s casket. The casket itself was adorned with the same artwork as The Stone Roses’ iconic debut album.
