TAEYANG has released QUINTESSENCE, his most ambitious and wide-ranging solo album to date, alongside the title track “LIVE FAST DIE SLOW,” via THEBLACKLABEL. The release arrives shortly after BIGBANG‘s closing performance at Coachella, positioning the album as the next chapter from one of K-pop’s most artistically restless figures.

QUINTESSENCE is built around a question rather than an answer. The album traces TAEYANG’s long-standing reflections on the nature of essence itself, exploring the unseen yet most vital values in life across a sonic landscape that refuses to stay in one place for long. Rather than arriving at conclusions, the project sits with the emotions, personal revelations, and ambiguities encountered along the way, grounded in TAEYANG’s own experience and aimed squarely at something essential in the listener. It is the kind of conceptual framing that could easily tip into abstraction, but the album’s construction keeps it grounded: the ideas land because the music is specific.

The collaborator roster assembled to realise that vision is one of the most globally diverse on any K-pop-adjacent release in recent memory. Grammy Award-winning production team The Stereotypes and Grammy-winning songwriter Theron Thomas bring a transatlantic pop precision to the project, while Tone Stith, j.Que, and Chaz Jackson extend the sonic palette further. From Korea, Tablo, Paul Blanco, and CAMO contribute alongside THEBLACKLABEL’s core production team of TEDDY, Vince, Dominsuk, and IDO, the latter group fresh off their work on KPop Demon Hunters. The Kid LAROI appears on “OPEN UP,” and ALLDAY PROJECT’s TARZZAN and WOOCHAN feature on the reflective “WOULD YOU.” The range of contributors is not incidental: it reflects TAEYANG’s stated ambition to make his most expansive record, and the sequencing rewards the ambition.

Across 10 tracks, QUINTESSENCE moves with intention. The album opens on the powerful “BAD” before working through atmospheric R&B on the Paris-evoking “MOVIE,” the uplifting momentum of “OPEN UP,” and the urgent EDM-driven energy of “NOW.” “YES” incorporates a sample of BIGBANG and 2NE1’s “Lollipop,” threading the project’s past into its present without making the gesture feel nostalgic. The album closes on “G.O.A.T,” an introspective track imagining what TAEYANG would share with his loved ones if today were his last, and “4U,” a reflective finale built around enduring hope and the concept of eternity.

Title track “LIVE FAST DIE SLOW” functions as the album’s thesis statement. Blending progressive pop with a punk attitude, it lands as a declaration of perseverance in the face of an ever-shifting reality: the kind of track that makes the stakes of the project clear from the first listen.

QUINTESSENCE is out now via THEBLACKLABEL.
