First reactions to Christopher Nolan’s massive historical epic ‘The Odyssey’ have officially hit the timeline following its star-studded London premiere
The $250 million USD adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem is being universally praised as a “staggering achievement” and a true filmmaking feast
Critics are singling out the star-studded cast—specifically Matt Damon’s powerhouse lead as Odysseus and Robert Pattinson’s scene-stealing villain run as Antinous—as career-best performances
The king of cinematic spectacle has officially done it again. Fresh off the monumental, billion-dollar run of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is back to completely take over the summer. The visionary director just premiered his highly anticipated, $250 million USD adaptation of The Odyssey in London, and the social media embargo has finally lifted. Based on the first wave of reactions pouring in from critics and industry insiders, Universal Pictures has an absolute monster of a hit on its hands.
When Nolan decides to tackle the most legendary Greek epic of all time, the culture pays attention. Shot entirely on IMAX cameras, The Odyssey chronicles the harrowing, ten-year journey of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) as he attempts to return home to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) following the Trojan War.
According to the early reviews, the film doesn’t just meet the astronomical hype—it shatters it. Critics are hailing the movie as a flawless masterpiece that perfectly blends jaw-dropping, large-scale practical effects with intense psychological drama. Variety’s Jazz Tangcay called it an “astonishing achievement” and a “triumphant, spectacular epic,” while other reviewers are already drawing heavy comparisons to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy regarding its sheer scale and world-building.
While the visuals are reportedly mind-bending, it’s the performances that are dominating the timeline. Damon is receiving massive praise for anchoring the film with a gritty, career-best performance, and Tom Holland continues to prove his range outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the true standout seems to be Robert Pattinson. Playing the manipulative and sleazy suitor Antinous, Pattinson completely leans into the villainy, with critics calling his performance “endlessly entertaining” and an absolute scene-stealer. The Odyssey hits theaters July 17, 2026.
The Odyssey: a surprisingly natural (and less despairing) Oppenheimer follow-up about a man haunted by defying the gods & dooming civilization – this one fights to avenge his own hubris. IMAX obviously immense. too clunky to be S-tier Nolan, but the last act rewards the journey.
