For the first time in over 15 years, we could have a brand-new Harold & Kumar film soon enough. Everyone light up in anticipatory joy!
The news came directly from producer Greg Shapiro during a discussion section at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival (via Variety). Shapiro said that they’re “working on the screenplay right now,” and that “everybody’s back, the actors [Kal Penn and John Cho], the writers…the writers are directing, and hopefully we should be shooting it soon.” However, Shapiro didn’t provide a definitive timeline as “it’s like any movie, it all has to come together in the right way.”
The film would follow 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. News of its development broke last summer when (per Shapiro’s comments) Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald were booked to write a new script. (While they wrote all three films, Hurwitz and Schlossberg only previously directed Escape from Guantanamo Bay.) Also last year, The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film would also be produced by Mandate Pictures.
In a statement from last year, Hurwitz and Schlossberg said that they were “fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”
