Alabama Shakes Lament Breakdown of the "American Dream" on New Song

Alabama Shakes have released a new song, “American Dream,” which serves as a teaser for their upcoming third album. Stream it below.

The slow-burning track layers a rumbling bassline and restrained guitar riffs stirring below Brittany Howard’s powerful vocals as she directly addresses the breakdown of, well, the American Dream: “Got the White House pretty and pimped out/ Gun reform/ My body, my choice/ Got the big TV to show you what you didn’t even know you wanted.”

“It’s a snapshot of what we’re living through in 2026,” said Howard in a statement. “I look around and wonder how we got to a place where there’s so much strain and so little support. I mean, it shouldn’t be impossible to take off work so you can bring your child to the doctor — that’s actually insane. My hope is that one day people will hear this song and say, ‘Yeah, shit was crazy back then, but we made it through.’”

A press release reveals Alabama Shakes’ follow-up to 2015’s Sound & Color will be released as their debut album on Island Records, but no further details have been provided.

“American Dream” arrives after last year’s “Another Life,” which marked the band’s first new single in over a decade.

The trio of Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, and Zac Cockrell is set to hit the road next week, with a North American leg (get tickets here) followed by a string of summer dates across the UK and Europe (get tickets here). Alabama Shakes will then return to the US and Canada in late July for a second North American run through late September. See the full itinerary below.
