Amid Rumors, Cartoon Network Announces It’s Not Shutting Down

’80s and ’90s babies the world over recoiled in horror last week as rumors of Cartoon Network’s closure began to swirl across the Internet. Now, Cartoon Network itself has debunked those rumors with a self-aware tweet that read “Yall we’re not dead, we’re just turning 30.”

As part of the recent merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, Cartoon Network was set to be combined with Warner Bros. Animation — but news that the freshly-merged company had laid off 82 staffers across its animation, scripted and unscripted departments caused a minor social media panic, with plenty of speculation that Cartoon Network, which was founded in 1992, would be gone for good. However, per Variety, the layoffs are part of the freshly-minted conglomerate’s cost-cutting maneuvers, along with reductions at HBO and HBO Max, both of which have seen a reduction in staff and programming. Variety also reviewed a memo to Warner Bros. and Discovery staffers from group chairman Channing Dungey that read the company would have a “new streamlined structure” for animation but did not note any specific program cancellations.

Stay tuned for more developments as the merger continues to unfold.
