Apple Acquires 'Severance' Rights for $70 Million USD, Eyes Season 4 and Spinoffs

Summary

  • Apple has purchased the full intellectual property rights to Severance from Fifth Season in a deal valued at approximately $70 million USD
  • The move shifts production duties to Apple Studios, aiming to stabilize budgets after Season 2 costs reportedly hit $20 million USD per episode
  • While Season 3 is set to begin filming this summer, reports confirm that a fourth season is effectively “locked,” with potential spinoffs now on the table

Apple has officially solidified its grip on Lumon Industries, acquiring the complete rights to its hit sci-fi thriller Severance from Fifth Season. The deal, reported by Deadline to be worth just under $70 million USD, transitions the series from a licensed property to a fully owned in-house project under Apple Studios. This strategic acquisition ensures the show’s longevity following a turbulent production cycle for its sophomore season.

The buyout comes as a response to mounting financial pressures faced by Fifth Season (formerly Endeavor Content). Reports indicate that production costs for Season 2 ballooned to nearly $20 million USD per episode due to strikes and delays, creating cash flow issues that threatened the show’s New York-based production. By bringing the IP in-house, Apple gains greater control over the budget and timeline, allowing Fifth Season to step back into an executive producing role while alleviating its financial burden.

Looking ahead, the acquisition has greenlit an ambitious roadmap for the franchise. Production for the long-awaited Season 3 is scheduled to begin this summer. Furthermore, sources suggest that a fourth season is already considered a “lock” within Apple’s internal planning. Creators Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson are reportedly open to expanding the universe further, with discussions floating around potential prequels, spinoffs, or even international adaptations to keep the Severance lore alive between seasons.

With the ink dry on the acquisition, Severance Season 3 is targeting a filming start date in Summer 2026. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Apple TV+.
