Oil prices slide in lockdown-driven rout

Oil prices dived Thursday on demand fears as more nations go into lockdown to staunch the spread of the coronavirus, while stock prices attempted a modest rebound. Both main oil contracts fell five percent for part of the day before clawing back some of their losses, extending this week’s meltdown to plumb four-month lows on virus-driven demand fears. “The new lockdowns have since yesterday caused a carnage in the oil market,” said Bjornar Tonhaugen, head of oil markets at Rystad Energy. “Oil demand will lose ground as a result of the new lockdowns… Prices now naturally decline on this grim prospect,” he added. The drop in oil prices will increase the pain on oil companies. Exxon Mobil announced Thursday it was eliminating 1,900 US jobs as part of a cost-cutting drive necessitated in part ...

GDP rebounds at record pace, but dark clouds reappear

Even the 33.1 percent annualized gain — a 7.4 percent jump in the third quarter from the second quarter — did not get the U.S. economy back to where it was at the end of the first quarter. And it would take a far bigger jump to get the economy back to where it would have been had Covid-19 not slammed the country at all. “From a numbers perspective, you would need 46 percent growth in the third quarter just to get back to where we were,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. Getting the economy back to where it would have been without Covid-19 would have taken a 63 percent gain in the third quarter. “To look at this more substantively, what these numbers tell you is fiscal policy works,” Shepherdson said. “The federal government borrowed a ton of money and sent i...

What the blowout GDP report really means for Trump

Even a gain as big as 35 percent on an annualized basis in the third-quarter GDP growth — while an all-time high — would not get the U.S. economy back to where it was at the end of the first quarter. And it would take a far bigger jump to get the economy back to where it would have been had Covid-19 not slammed the country at all. Economists and Wall Street analysts now expect much slower growth in the fourth quarter and early next year than they previously expected, given that the roughly $4 trillion in federal stimulus spending that propped up consumers and businesses through the end of the summer has largely faded. Thursday’s numbers, if taken out of context, will tell us nothing about the road ahead. The surge in new virus cases is already leading to more restrictions on activity that ...

This is the right time we have to start planning. “With the estimated revenue per annum in the maritime sector, it can provide 30 times what the oil industry can provide. “That ...
