The widespread displacement of jobs has set off a scramble among workers to find new skills and careers — a situation that also presents a challenge for the government as it seeks to keep people employed and off the relief rolls. House Democrats are exploring pandemic aid that would fund efforts to retrain workers, providing them the skills needed to find jobs in other industries. “When things shut down, there was a lot of delusion” that employment would soon return to normal, said Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute, a former Labor Department chief economist. “Now, people are realizing that in industries where there’s a lot of social contact, many of those [jobs] are just not coming back” until well after there’s a vaccine. Among those industries are r...
The police in Lagos, on Friday, warned that the burning of several police stations across the state will lead to retrogression and a waste of money that could have been deployed to other projects. The police spokesperson in the state, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, gave the warning in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. “The implication of this is that money that has been set aside to do other projects and develop certain areas will have to be channeled into repairing these damaged stations.” He said that over 17 police formations across the state have been totally or partially razed by fire, set on them by thugs who infiltrated the #EndSARS protesters. “Also, it will make our work harder now because we will have to enhance our patrols in order to cover more grassroots areas that are normally covered ...

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti says Alex Iwobi’s pace, hardwork and quality can help in making the Toffees a better team in certain situations. Ancelotti stated this ahead of Everton’s Premier League tie against Southampton this weekend with the duo of James Rodriguez and Richarlison out. The potential absence of both James and Richarlison will present starting opportunities for members of Ancelotti’s squad short on top-flight action this term. And among those vying for a first Premier League start this term is Iwobi, who dazzled after replacing Richarlison in the opening half of Everton’s victory over Brighton & Hove Albion prior to this month’s international break. “We have to put in other players who have the desire to play,” said Ancelotti. “We are working this week on this and I ...
Manchester United will approach Saturday’s home English Premier League (EPL) clash with Chelsea in buoyant mood rather than in trepidation. This is after a week which has gone some way to banishing the gloom that was descending on Old Trafford. After going into this month’s international break with a 6-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, they have emerged from it with a couple of victories which have kick-started their campaign. Last weekend’s 4-1 win at Newcastle United was followed by a 2-1 victory away to Paris St-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League. For now at least, the critics have been silenced. Chelsea’s visit, however, presents a test of Manchester United’s upswing as they seek their first home league points of the season. This is in the wake of defeats by Crystal Palce and...
