The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has set up a seven-man disciplinary committee to look into activities of party members working against the resolution of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC). The state party’s Chairman, Alhaji Lawal Liman, made this known in a statement in Gusau on Tuesday. Liman said that the committee was set up in line with the directive by the National Secretariat of the party. He said the committee, headed by the Zonal Vice Chairman, Zamfara North, Alhaji Abdullahi Ja’o, has Mr Bello Umar as Secretary. “Other members are Ahmad Maradun, Nasiru Magayaki, Babangida Abdullahi, Aliyu Kagara and Umar Abbas. “The committee has 19 days to submit its report as directed by the National Secretariat of the party,” he said. Liman said that Zamfara A...
Mason Greenwood has spoken to the press for the first time since his first England call-up last week. The Manchester United youngster is in line to make his international debut for the Three Lions in their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Iceland and Denmark. “It’s a dream come through,” Greenwood said when asked about his call-up. He got a phone call from Gareth Southgate while at home with his dad and said he was “over the moon”. His father, a level-headed man, was “buzzing” with the news, according to Greenwood himself. [embedded content] Greenwood’s journey thus far has been a remarkable one. From coming through the United academy, being the best player in every age group, to being an established starlet in world football. There’s no stopping this kid and it’s no surprise to an...
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee led by Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni has said it has no anointed candidate for the legislative by-election in Cross River North Senatorial by-election in Cross River State. Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena said the refutation was compelling against the backdrop of the allegation by a former presidential aide, “Chief Okoi Obono-Obla alleging an attempt to ‘foist’ a predetermined candidate in the forthcoming Cross River North Senatorial District by-elections. “There are no preferred, pre-determined or anointed aspirants.” Nabena further maintained that “under the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led caretaker committee, the party is already moving in a new and progres...
Ebere Eze made his debut for Crystal Palace during a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Charlton in preseason friendly. The former Queens Park Rangers (QPR) player who made a big-money move to Selhurst this summer played for 45 minutes in the encounter and was brilliant throughout his stay at the club. Eze presence in midfield showed why the club doled out 20 million pounds for his services. The player who is eligible to play for England and Nigeria fired a shot wide from 20 yards after making space for himself. He set up Andros Townsend who tried an overhead-kick at goal but it was blocked before Jordan Ayew hit the post as the first half ended goalless. Eze made way for Jeffrey Schlupp at the start of the second half. However, Ghanaian Jordan Ayew opened scoring from a pass by former Manches...
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the company says it just had its best first half since launching in 2008. The pandemic-causing economic downturn didn’t slow down BMG as the music company posted a 4.8% increase in revenue to €282 million euros ($310.8 million) at the mid-year point ended June 30, up from €269 million ($303.9 million) in the year-earlier period. The music operation of German conglomerate Bertelsmann also managed to hold its own in terms of profit, posting €49 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, the same amount it had in the first half of 2019. But with profit levels holding steady while revenue grew, that resulted in EBITDA margin falling to 17.3% from 18.1% in the prior half year results. The results represent the company’s “...
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is showing once again that he’s one of the best blokes in football with his bid to end child hunger in the UK. As reported by the BBC, Rashford has teamed up with a number of major food brands to set up a taskforce to tackle child food poverty in this country. The England international notably forced the government into a U-turn on free school meals earlier this summer, having shown himself to be a superb campaigner on an issue he clearly feels passionately about. Rashford had a difficult upbringing himself and has spoken publicly about being reliant on free school meals when he was a kid, and wants to ensure others now can get the support he did then. The 22-year-old will no doubt be making United fans proud with his commitment to this issue, with so...
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has emphasised the need for effective COVID-19 prevention plans as countries reopen their economies and borders. Its Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, gave the advice during a news briefing from Geneva on Monday. Ghebreyesus said he had observed the eagerness of countries to “get their economies going again”, eight months into the coronavirus pandemic. According to him, if countries are serious about opening, they must prioritise the suppression of transmission and safety of lives. He warned that opening up without efficient and effective prevention measures in place was “a recipe for disaster”. Ghebreyesus said this might seem an impossible balance, but it could be done if countries were in control of the transmission. “The more control they have...
As part of efforts to restore and encourage a reading culture among Nigerians, the UK embassy’s British Council in Nigeria has launched a globally renowned digital library following temporary closure of its physical libraries. Getting an Amazon package delivered from the sky is closer to becoming a reality. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday (Aug. 31) it had granted Amazon approval to deliver packages by drones. Amazon said that the approval is an “important step,” but added that it is still testing and flying the drones. It did not say when it expected drones to make deliveries to shoppers. The online shopping giant has been working on drone delivery for years, but it has been slowed by regulatory hurdles. Back in December 2013, Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos said in a TV interview that drones would be flying to customer’s homes within five years. Last year, Amazon unveiled self-piloting drones that are fully electric, can carry 5 pounds of goods and are designed to deliver items in 30 minutes b...
The novel coronavirus pandemic has shifted release calendars and postponed productions in Hollywood and abroad — and the delay of the latest installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise has created an “irreconcilable conflict” for Johnny Depp. Filming is now expected to extend into early 2021, overlapping with the trial in his defamation suit against Amber Heard. The actor in March 2019 sued his ex-wife for defamation over an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post titled “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” Depp isn’t mentioned by name, but in Virginia (where he’s suing and the Post has its printing presses) plaintiffs can pursue claims for defamation by inference, implication or insinuation. O...
