APC: PDP rudderless under Uche Secondus

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been sinking since Uche Secondus became its chairman. The party said this after Secondus criticised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration. In a statement on Monday, the APC said the main opposition party became “rudderless under his (Mr Secondus) watch” and alleged that party’s stakeholders had detached from its activities. “Under Secondus, the PDP has never had it this bad with the opposition party’s stakeholders detached from the party activities as was witnessed with notable PDP leaders boycotting the party’s 2019 presidential campaigns and the recent Bayelsa State Governorship bribe-for-ticket scandal that indicted Secondus. “Little wonder, the recent months have wit...

2 Men Indicted in 2002 Killing of Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay

Two men have been indicted in the 2002 slaying of hip hop artist Jam Master Jay, which until now had been one of New York City’s most notorious unsolved killings, three law enforcement officials told the Associated Press on Monday. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and did so on the condition of anonymity. One of them identified the suspects as Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan. Federal prosecutors were expected to announce the charges at a news conference Monday afternoon. Washington, who had reportedly been living on a couch at Jay’s home in the days before his death, was publicly named as a possible suspect or witness as far back as 2007. He is currently serving a federal prison sentence stemming from a string of robberies he committed while on the run from police afte...

Trump administration approves opening Arctic refuge for drilling

Many oil companies have sought access to ANWR for years, but the official decision to open it comes at a time when few in the industry are expected to take a risk on unexplored properties with little data on the oil resources beneath the surface. But Bernhardt said despite the absence of seismic data that companies use to map out oil reservoirs before drilling, he expected interest to be strong. “I think a lot of people will bid without seismic data,” he told reporters. President Donald Trump, who has previously boasted about opening ANWR, indicated in an interview early Monday that no final decision had been made on opening the area. “We may or may not do it,” he said. “Well no, we are looking at it.” Bernhardt declined to comment on Trump’s comments, saying,...

Unemployment Isn’t Too High — Regular Wages Are Too Low

Congress has access to this basic information. A Congressional Research Service study notes that since the EITC was first enacted in 1975, lawmakers have shown a growing preference for using these refundable tax credits to help working families afford childcare, health care, education and have the income to cover the basics of life; Congress likes these refundable credits as they are thought to encourage work. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities notes that in 2018, the EITC lifted over 10 million people out of poverty, while making over 17 million less poor. This statistic shows both how important the EITC has been to improving the health and well being of families — but it also shows the extent to which our economy has come to rely on the working poor. It is also important to note ...

Manchester City targeting Mauricio Pochettino to replace Pep Guardiola

Manchester City are targeting Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager if Pep Guardiola fails to agree new deal, claims The Sun. Gaurdiola’s long-term future at the Etihad is in some doubt with the Spaniard yet to commit beyond next season. City are big fans of Pochettino with the former Tottenham boss keen to coach again in England. But Poch knows Guardiola, reeling from Saturday’s Champions League exit to Lyon, has just ten months left on his contract. So far Guardiola has not committed to staying beyond next summer, which could soon leave City in limbo. The club hierarchy would ideally like him to extend his deal and continue – despite another Euro failure. His close friends at City – chief exec Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain – are keen for him to stay on. Bu...

The Auditor-General of the Federation, Mr. Anthony Ayine, Monday, described as false and mischievous, allegations that he connived with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to illegally withdraw N10 billion from the account of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS. Supreme Court Asked to Review ‘Stairway to Heaven’ Fight

Is the Supreme Court ready to make music history? One petitioner is giving nine justices of the high court such an opportunity while hardly being subtle about it. Here are the opening notes from a new cert petition: “It is fitting, perhaps, that the future of music copyright law be decided by a case about rock ‘n’ roll’s most iconic song, ‘Stairway to Heaven.’” The petition comes from Michael Skidmore, trustee for the Randy Craig Wolfe Trust — which is to say he’s representing an interest once belonging to Randy “California” Wolfe, singer-songwriter for the rock band Spirit. Wolfe authored a song “Taurus,” which many observers see as being extremely similar in structure to the opening of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.&#...
