All but one of those lawmakers voted for House Bill 6, which provided the $1.3 billion to prevent the shutdown of FirstEnergy Solutions’ two nuclear power plants and a coal plant. But even with that support, Householder and the others indicted had to spend millions on advertising to ensure passage of the bill. The bill to aid FirstEnergy Solutions, which was rechristened Energy Harbor after exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in February, also gutted the state’s renewable power portfolio standard and its energy efficiency mandates. Householder, using the funds in Generation Now, which has also been charged, also undermined a petition to put the issue on the bailout before Ohio voters, according to DeVillers. Generation Now hired signature gathering firms in order to preve...
Trump’s shift in tone, along with the return of the coronavirus briefing, comes as the latest surge in cases has become impossible to ignore. Close to 4 million Americans have contracted the virus, though data from the CDC indicates the true number of infections could be 10 times greater. His comments also come as the country returned to another grim milestone, recording more than 1,000 daily deaths from the coronavirus for the first time since May. In the first coronavirus briefing in three months, President Donald Trump acknowledged the real scope of the pandemic’s impact in the U.S. “As one family, we mourn every precious life that’s been lost,” Trump said at the beginning of prepared remarks, one of the most specific acknowledgments in some time of the more than 140,000 Americans kille...

President Donald Trump ordered the US census Tuesday to exclude illegal immigrants in its population count for determining representation in Congress, a move that could boost long-term Republican strength. The unprecedented order challenges the long-accepted constitutional mandate to count every person in the country every 10 years, as the basis for determining representation in the 435 seat House of Representatives. “For the purpose of the reapportionment of representatives following the 2020 census, it is the policy of the United States to exclude from the apportionment base aliens who are not in a lawful immigration status,” Trump’s order said. Excluding undocumented migrants in setting Congressional districts “is more consonant with the principles of representative democracy,” the orde...

The studies, published in The Lancet medical journal, constitute a major step on the road towards a COVID-19 vaccine that is effective and safe for widespread use. The authors of the studies said that they encountered a few adverse side effects from the vaccine candidates. However, they cautioned that more research was needed, particularly among older...

Digital devices are now the dominant method of listening to music, and the coronavirus seems to be behind the latest growth wave. For the first time since Edison Research began documenting audio consumption with its Share of Ear study in 2014, digital and on-demand platforms owned over half of consumers’ time spent listening during the second quarter of 2020. Listeners accessed music through smartphones, computers, internet-connected TVs and smart speakers during 53% of their listening hours. The other 47% of listening came through more traditional means, such as AM/ FM receivers, SiriusXM devices, CD players, turntables and standard TV. In the previous study, traditional devices still maintained the advantage, amassing 55% of the daily time spent listening. Digital’s rise past...
