IGP asks Ibrahim Magu’s lawyer to request for bail from presidential panel

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has asked Tosin Ojaomo, the counsel for the embattled former acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, to direct the request for his client’s bail to the Presidential panel investigating his activities in office. Adamu said the police were not investigating Magu and is accordingly, not being detained by the force but by the panel headed by a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami. Adamu said this in a letter dated July 14, 2020, in response to the bail application filed by Ojaomo for the release of his client who had been in police custody since July 6. The letter with reference CB:7000/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.489/171 titled, ‘RE: Application for bail,’ was signed by the Principa...

German pharmacists develop gargle test to detect coronavirus

Pharmacists at Germany’s University of Halle-Wittenberg have developed a way of detecting small amounts of coronavirus in gargling solution, a technique which could be used for testing. The study used samples of a solution that patients infected with the coronavirus had gargled with, successfully tracing the virus with a technique called mass spectrometry, the university said in a statement on Wednesday. The institution said the new method must be further refined before it could be used as a standard diagnostic tool to complement existing coronavirus tests. The test is highly specific as it targets protein components that exist only in the novel coronavirus, also known as Sars-CoV-2. “We measure direct peptides coming from the virus, not the genetic material,’’ Andrea Sinz, who worked on t...

NMA warns Lagos not escalate impasse with medical doctors

The NMA leaders said that this was to prevent avoidable escalation of the issue. Victor Osimhen: Napoli’s alternate striking target was Ciro Immobile

As Napoli close in on a deal for Victor Osimhen, it is claimed their other striking target was Lazio’s Ciro Immobile. Napoli officials are in Sardinia to finalise Osimhen’s transfer from Lille, which could cost as much as €81m. In the meantime, La Repubblica reports the Partenopei had also looked at Immobile. The hitman was born in Naples and his agent once said he could not turn down a move to his hometown club. However, Lazio owner Claudio Lotito had demanded no less than €50m for his No 9, which Aurelio De Laurentiis deemed too much for a player who turned 30 in February. Immobile is currently Capocannoniere in Serie A with 29 goals, but Osimhen is just 21 in comparison and ran out as Lille’s top scorer for 2019-20 with 13 strikes. Pep Guardiola: Manchester City deserve an apology

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said his team deserved an apology, after their two-year UEFA ban from European football was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) — a verdict he called “a good day for football”. Guardiola said the club’s reputation had been damaged by the furore around allegations that they broke Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and fired back at comments from rival managers Jose Mourinho and Juergen Klopp. Mourinho had described the CAS decision to fine City 10 million euros ($11.39 million) for non-cooperation with the investigation as “disgraceful”. “Maybe. The thing about the money, maybe. But Jose and all the managers should know that we were damaged. We should be apologised (to). Because, like I said many times, if we did something wrong, we will...

Michel Platini: Paulo Dybala is more Maradona

Getty Images Michel Platini has hailed Paulo Dybala for matching his Serie A stats with Juventus but considers him more ‘Maradona-esque’ than like him. Dybala now sits on 157 appearances and 68 goals for Juve in the top flight, putting him on par with the numbers Platini recorded between 1982 and 1987. “Avvocato [Gianni Agnelli] is no longer with us so I can’t make him say things he might not have, but yes… if he liked Sivori, I think he’d have appreciated Dybala greatly,” the Frenchman told Gazzetta dello Sport. “The Argentine’s very good on the pitch and he’s fresh-faced. He comes across as a likeable lad. “It’s interesting that he’s matched me for goals and appearances in Serie A. Figures are one thing, but we’re different players. “I always try to avoid comparisons, but I can say that ...

Bigsound Will Go Ahead In 2020 With COVIDSafe Format

Bigsound is back on the industry calendar. While the health crisis wrecks the touring industry around the globe, Australia’s main music industry conference and showcase is set for a return to Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley in 2020 at a later date than usual, and in a condensed, COVIDSafe format. The announcement this week caught the industry by surprise. The southern state of Victoria and its capital Melbourne, widely regarded at the country’s cultural mecca, has just entered a second lockdown to try curb a worrying spike in coronavirus cases. And there are worrying signs of an outbreak or two in New South Wales. The Bigsound show, however, will go on. Originally announced for Sept 1- 4, this year’s event will be reduced to a two-day, two-night event from Oct. 21. All activities will fo...

Chris Okotie: Online church service unbiblical

Pastor of the Household of God Church International Ministries in the Oregun area of Lagos State, Reverend Chris Okotie, says online church service, which has become the order of the day due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is unscriptural. He argued that Christians must physically gather together to be able to truly worship God. Okotie, in a sermon titled, ‘The COVID-19 Mystery’, maintained that the novel disease is a satanic conspiracy to challenge the power of God by keeping Christians out of the church. Okotie said, “We are dealing with one of the most sinister conspiracies in human history. What we call the online church is absolutely untrue, because for you to be in church, you have to be ecclesia, which is translated from the Greek word, ec, which is out, and the word caleo, called out. “Y...
