Waymo inks deal with Volvo to develop self-driving electric cars
Agence France-Presse Waymo and the Volvo Cars Group have agreed to develop a self-driving electric vehicle designed for ride-hailing use, as part of a new global partnership, the companies said on Thursday. Waymo, a unit of Silicon Valley’s Alphabet, said it will be the exclusive global partner for Volvo Cars for developing self-driving vehicles capable of operating safely without routine driver intervention. Waymo will focus on the artificial intelligence for the software “driver.” Volvo will design and manufacture the vehicles. Police quiz D’banj over rape allegation
The Nigeria Police Force has quizzed Musician, Dapo Oyebanjo, aka D’Banj, over allegations of rape, according to a report. It was learnt that D’Banj was grilled by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Adaku Anya, at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Garki, Abuja. A statement was also taken from the Kokomaster who insisted that he never raped his accuser, Seyitan Babatayo. A top police source said, “D’Banj has been questioned twice at the FCID, Abuja. He was questioned last week and also this week. Police bar APC’s acting national secretary from secretariat
The crisis in the All Progressive Congress (APC) continues to deepen as the Acting National Secretary of the party, Arc Waziri Bulama, was barred by armed policemen from entering the National Secretariat. World Bank: Nigeria faces worst recession in 40 years
The collapse in crude oil prices, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, is expected to “plunge the Nigerian economy into a severe recession, the worst since the 1980s”, the World Bank said on Thursday. The World Bank, in a new report, titled ‘Nigeria in times of COVID-19: Laying foundations for a strong recovery,’ estimated that Nigeria’s economy would likely contract by 3.2 per cent this year. “This projection assumes that the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria is contained by the third quarter of 2020,” it said. The bank said if the spread of the virus became more severe, the economy could contract further. Meter manufacturer urges Nigerian government to grant sector ‘special’ forex regime
Sabrud Consortium, an indigenous electricity prepaid metre manufacturing firm, has urged the Federal Government to grant special forex regime to the sector. It also applauded the upward review of metre prices by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) which took effect on June 1. The firm said also that the increase in prices of prepaid electricity meters will boost local production. The Kogi State House of Assembly has lost one of its members, John Abah. He was a lawmaker representing Ibaji Constituency in the 8th assembly, where he was serving as a second term. Demi Olugbemi, the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, Mathew Kolawole, confirmed the death. Abah was said to have died early hours of Wednesday. The Peoples Democratic Party has faulted an allegation by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, that members of the party’s National Working Committee are tax collectors. The PDP reacted to the governor’s claim in a press statement by its National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbodiyan, Wednesday. Woman hacked to death in Ibadan
A 42-year-old woman, Olusayo Fagbemi, has been reportedly murdered in the early hours of Wednesday by unknown assailants at Sasa community in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. Fagbemi was reported to have been killed while washing plates in front of her house around 5:40am. It was learnt that her neighbours were attracted to the scene by Fagbemi’s cry for help. On getting to the scene, she was seen struggling in the pool of her blood and later confirmed dead in the hospital. In the last three weeks, four females and a male – Mujeeb Tirimisiyu, Barakat Bello, Fagbemi, Grace Oshiagwu and Azeezat Shomuyiwa, have been gruesomely murdered in the area.
