Malcolm Cecil, Synth Pioneer and Stevie Wonder Collaborator, Dies at 84

Cecil designed and built the TONTO — The Original New Timbral Orchestra — an instrument that’s acknowledged as the world’s first and largest multi-timbral, polyphonic analog audio synth. He teamed up with Robert Margouleff to form TONTO’s Expanding Head Band, which led to some surprise collaborations. Cecil and Margouleff’s sonic mastery caught the attention of Stevie Wonder, who tapped the pair to co-produce a string of classic albums, including Music Of My Mind through Fulfillingness’ First Finale. “Music of My Mind was made with the best hearts in the world. Everything we did was done in that three-point of view aspect,” he told OkayPlayer’s Chris Williams for an interview published in 2019, “and we were trading hats during the process of making this album....

WARRANT guitarist Joey Allen spoke with Darren Paltrowitz — host of the “Paltrocast With Darren Paltrowitz” — about how he and his bandmates have been spending their downtime during the coronavirus pandemic. Asked if there has been any talk of WARRANT making a follow-up to 2017’s “Louder Harder Faster” album, Joey said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “We talked about it last year when this whole pandemic started, and we were, like, ‘Should we do something now? Should we do something live on the web? Should we do a new record?’ And everybody was just, like, you know what? We’ve been at this since I got back in the band, Steven [Sweet, drums] came back in the band, since 2004, so that’s roughly 16 years where we just havenR...

But I want there to be a Lollapalooza in some capacity so bad. But we can only respond to the people. If the people are getting it right and we’re flattening out and we’re going away from COVID infections, there’s hope. I listen to Joe Biden, when he th...

Vancouver DJ Performs on Empty Train to Keep Local Music Scene Alive During Pandemic

While the pandemic has certainly put a pause on the ability for artists to perform live at events, it has not stopped them from performing. For many, pre-recorded sets or livestreams have become the new normal and one Vancouver DJ took it to public transit. Kumo Promotions, a Vancouver-based promotional company, has been hosting weekly livestreams for months now out of Studio710, a multimedia studio located in the heart of the city. With the goal to elevate Vancouver’s music industry while simultaneously showcasing the beauty and talent that the city has to offer, the Kumo team was inspired to record a DJ set from the Skytrain, courtesy of DJ K-OG. “We wanted to do something cool, something out of the box, and showcase the city’s beautiful scenery that Vancouverites see every day and ...

Brian Rohan, San Francisco ‘Dope Lawyer’ to the Stars, Dies at 84

Rohan co-founded the Haight Ashbury Legal Organization and the group recruited clients in part by setting up a table outside the Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury Street. Thanks to his association with the Grateful Dead, Rohan also became a music lawyer. In 1966, he helped the band negotiate its first contract with Warner Bros. He also represented Janis Joplin, Santana and Jefferson Airplane. His non-musician clients included Beat writer Neal Cassady and members of the Merry Pranksters, the communal travelers chronicled in Tom Wolfe’s 1968 book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. “Brian Rohan, though he is probably one of the most successful of the dope lawyers, hasn’t worn a suit in a year, his usual attire being faded corduroys and a T shirt,” the San Francisco Examiner wrote in a 1970 sto...

Canadian Topples Racist American to Claim No. 1 Album

Credit where credit is due: Justin Bieber just accomplished something no other musician has been able to do in the last 10 weeks. With the release of his latest album Justice, Bieber has ended Morgan Wallen’s 10-week reign atop the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Justice moved 154,000 equivalent album units in its first week of release, giving Bieber the eighth No. 1 album of his career, according to Billboard. At the age of 27, the Biebes has now passed Elvis Presley as the youngest solo musician with eight No. 1 albums to his name. But more importantly, Justice debuting at No. 1 means the end of Wallen’s record-setting 10-week streak at No. 1. Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album was only the third album in history to sit at No. 1 for the first 10 weeks of its release — and almost all of tha...

He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “[Oz is] doing great, believe it or not — he’s doing really great. Just a few days after his surgery, he was pretty much back to normal in terms of how he sounded, talking to him on the phone. He’s gonna be great, man; he’s gonna be fine. He’s heading home, I think, tomorrow. He wound up staying close to the hospital just in case anything were to happen. And he̵...
