Y’Lan Noel Cast As Lead In ‘The Spook Who Sat By The Door’ Pilot For FX

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Jim Spellman / Getty The Spook Who Sat By The Door was a novel released in 1969 and made into a film in 1973, which centers on the fictional tale of the CIA’s first Black officer. A pilot was announced to be coming soon to FX and now, the potential series has cast its lead in Y’Lan Noel. The original The Spook Who Sat By The Door story came to the masses in 1969 via the late Sam Greenlee. The book was profound for its time and the 1973 film has retained classic status among viewers for its innovative take on a Black person’s experience in a world where they are an exception and not the rule. According to the good folks at Deadline, Noel, who some may remember from his role as Daniel on Issa Rae’s hit HBO show Insecure, will play the role of Dan Freeman, a...

Lollapalooza Founder Perry Farrell Hints at 2021 Edition

Jane’s Addiction frontman and the face of Lollapalooza, Perry Farrell, has shared an optimistic outlook on the festival’s prospects for a 2021 event.  Farrell appears eager to get the show back on the road after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, taking to Instagram to hint at the 2021 edition of the iconic Chicago music fest. “I hold in my hands my license to party,” Farrell stated while holding up his COVID-19 vaccination receipt. “I will see you at Lollapalooza – soon.” Lollapalooza would be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and currently the four-day event is on the books for July 30th through August 2nd. Last year’s event was held virtually and blended in new live performances alongside “best of” sets pulled from the archi...

Nintendo’s New “Splatoon 3” Ad is Fueling Speculation of Daft Punk Involvement

Eagle-eyed fans have caught sight of Daft Punk appearing in a print ad for Nintendo’s upcoming video game title, Splatoon 3.  The ad appeared in CoroCoro, a Japanese Manga magazine, and features a shot of the forthcoming title on a television. It’s the surrounding decor, however, that particularly caught our eye.  Standing up against the bottom left of the TV stand is a flyer for Daft Punk Airlines, which prominently features the dance music duo dressed in shorts and tropical shirts. The slogan “Around The World” is also seen on the flyer, no doubt a head nod to the duo’s groundbreaking 90s hit by the same name.   Another Splatoon 3 ad in the magazine depicts a paint streak trailing off far into the distance amid a barren desert l...

Van Morrison Shares ‘Only A Song’ From Upcoming Latest Record Project Volume 1 Album

Often-contentious Irish singer Van Morrison has made news in recent months for being opposed to the COVID lockdown and released several songs voicing his displeasure. ‘It Was Their Childhood’: Looking Back on 30 Years of Clarissa Explains It All

Believe it or not, it’s been 30 years since Clarissa Explains It All first aired. For five seasons, Melissa Joan Hart and the rest of the cast would set the standard for Nickelodeon’s programming in the ‘90s and define the entire childhood of a generation now known as millennials. But while the show might’ve been one of the biggest hits of the now-iconic era for the network, it’s possible that its lasting impact is only just beginning. With several episodes now on Paramount+ (because apparently they’re opposed to putting the entirety of anything on the new streaming service for some unknown reason), new and future generations are likely about to discover Clarissa Darling and her unique takes on the world for the first time. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({...

Nobody Is the Premier Dad Film of 2021: Review

The Pitch: Hutch Mansell’s the name, and accounting is his game. Bob Odenkirk is Mansell, a five o’clock shadow of a human being, working in a warehouse as the back-office calculator. He drones day in and day out, running the numbers for louder and more macho men. His son hates him. His wife sleeps with a pillow between them. His life is the very model of suburban repression and depression, but beneath the pale exterior lies a sleeping giant. Prior to accountancy, Hutch was a homicidal “accountant” for “all the places with acronym names”, as he puts it. He was once a veritable James Bond, with an affinity for swift completions and anonymity. Now, no more. It’s all Restoration Hardware décor and vinyl collections for lame old Hutch. But where most men spend their midlife crises on cars, boa...

Corpse Paint Facial Masks Are the Latest Thing for Skincare

Want to look evil and take care of your skin at the same time? Soon you can, thanks to a new line of corpse paint skincare masks inspired by your favorite black-metal bands. Yes, corpse paint facial masks are now a thing — or soon will be once Kaamos Cosmetics reaches their crowdfunding goal. The brains behind the cosmetics brand are the same people who brought us the highly popular corpse paint bar soaps that bore the likenesses of such icons as King Diamond, Abbath and Dani Filth. There are currently two types of facial masks — a green tea mask and a rice bran mask — each with a distinct corpse paint style designed by Finnish illustrator JP Ahonen. Cleverly, Kaamos Cosmetics is calling it “total sincare”: “Vegan and cruelty-free ingredients, extra cruel looks! For the self-caring metalhe...

Posthumous Alan Vega Song “Fist” Unveiled: Stream

Last month, Sacred Bones announced the release of a long-lost solo album from the late Suicide singer Alan Vega. The record, titled Mutator, is due out next month, and today the label is releasing its second single, “Fist”. Similar to album’s initial preview, “Nike Soldier”, this cut is five minutes of grim yet playful post-punk from one of the best to ever do it. The song has a sleek and rubbery industrial groove that Vega chants “fist” over with the domineering emphasis of a comic book villain. It’s the type of song that’s equally perfect for a wild night at a steamy club or with the lights low in the comfort of your own home. Take a listen below. Vega, who died in 2016, sadly isn’t here to comment on the specific intentions of this song, but a couple of his close collaborators...

In recent years, WMG has opened affiliates in India, Turkey and the Middle East, and has inked a string of strategic deals with key labels and distributors, including Doğan Music (Turkey), Ziiki Media (Punjabi music), Africori (Africa), Sky Digital (Punjabi music) and Tips Music (Bollywood). “I want to unlock huge opportunities for artists from the diverse tapestry of countries that we classify as emerging markets,” said Perez-Soto. “I’ll work round the clock to build a global stage for them to stand on, connecting them with fans in their home countries and far beyond.” Robson added: “The increasing connectivity of music fans in emerging markets is opening doors for artists worldwide, but the huge volume of music on streaming services means that, mo...

Frankie Jonas ‘Grateful’ to Be Alive After Drug, Alcohol Struggles

Jonas explained that “something intervened” and his life was saved, saying that he went to a treatment facility and he “couldn’t be more grateful for the fact that I’m alive today because my world has changed so beautifully and so astronomically, and I am not that person anymore. I couldn’t be more grateful that I’m alive and happy.” In an earlier video, Jonas referred to himself as a “sober drug addict” who is currently attending Columbia University, which he admitted he’s conflicted about sometimes. “I don’t belong there! It’s okay that I feel that, but it doesn’t make me less than anyone else, it doesn’t make me more than anyone else,” he said. “It’s also good to understand ...
