Women’s History Month Tribute: Alice Coltrane

Alice Coltrane’s music has had a huge influence on me in several aspects, perhaps most significantly by broadening my musical horizon and igniting my interest in jazz. Her music was my first contact with spiritual jazz, the genre which she pioneered throughout the ‘60s and into the ‘70s. I vividly remember my introduction to her music. In November of 2017, following the reissue World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, The Sai Anantam Ashram Singers came to Copenhagen to perform the album and screen the documentary titled Ashram. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”25115″,”width”:”480″,”h...

Puscifer to Perform Money Shot in Its Entirety for Upcoming Livestream Concert

Puscifer have announced their second livestream event, dubbed “Billy D and the Hall of Feathered Serpents Featuring Money Shot by Puscifer”. The virtual concert goes live on April 17th at 5 p.m. ET and will be available for on-demand viewing. As the name implies, Puscifer will be performing 2015’s Money Shot in its entirety, reviving the Lucha Libre wrestling themed performances of that album cycle. And like the band’s previous cinematic livestream, the upcoming show promises eye-popping costumes and set pieces, with Puscifer performing at the historic Mayan Theater in Los Angeles. “In this prequel to his alleged abduction during Existential Reckoning, we find Billy D trudging through what has been referred to as the Bermuda Triangle of the Southwest,” singer Maynard James Keenan explained...

King of the Hill in “Hot Negotiations” for Revival Set 15 Years Later

I tell you what, co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are in “hot negotiations” to revive King of the Hill and set it 15 years after the original. There had been discussions around a reboot of the beloved animated series in 2017, but momentum stalled at the time. Former writer Brent Forrester revealed the renewed interest in a recent Reddit AMA after being asked by user vancity screnwriter, “Have you heard any updates as to the possible King of the Hill revival? Aging the cast of characters would be a stroke of genius and practically reinvent the show (in an awesome way!)” Forrester obliged with an answer: “I am sure Greg Daniels and Mike Judge will murder me for sharing this but… HELL YES. They are in hot negotiations to bring back King of the Hill. The Trump administrat...

10 Riot Grrrl Albums Every Music Fan Should Own

Editor’s Note: Crate Digging is a recurring feature in which we take a deep dive into a genre and turn up several albums all music fans should know about. This time, we celebrate Women’s History Month with a deep dig into the riot grrrl genre. Emerging from the deep forests of The Pacific Northwest, riot grrrl was a rasping rallying cry at a time when gender norms weighed heavily on the mosh pits and politics imposed itself dangerously on ovaries and queerness. With punk legends like Patti Smith and The Slits preceding them, the emerging DIY feminist punk movement of the ’90s brought with it grievances of the third wavers. Faced with no space in the existing punk-rock scene, attention was turned to tackling sexism and carving out a new underground alternative. A movement of rioting gi...

Tom DeLonge Is Selling Blink-182 and Angels and Airwaves Gear on Reverb

Tom DeLonge has partnered with Reverb to sell his Blink-182 and Angels and Airwaves gear. The Official Tom DeLonge Reverb Shop goes live on March 24th. Over 100 items used in the studio and on tour will be up for grabs, including synthesizers, keyboards, amps, pedals, road cases, and more. For fans of Blink-182, there’s a few priceless artifacts, like the Marshall JMP-1 and Mesa Boogie Triaxis amps the band toured with beginning in 2000. “A lot of these still have the original settings for the songs they were used on,” DeLonge said in a press release. The veteran musician simply has too much stuff, and it’s time to make space. Reverb hosted a similar sale with Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, who sold much of his stock within the first days of launching. DeLonge is the latest major artist to sell...

Over the past year, artists from Cardi B to The-Dream and Rico Nasty have all joined content subscription platform OnlyFans — and Beyoncé even gave the platform a shout-out during her verse on a remix of Megan Thee Stallion‘s “Savage.” Now, the London-based company is leaning further into the music world with the launch of a new creative fund for artists in the U.K., announced today (March 17). The fund will award four aspiring artists grants of £20,000 (roughly $27,800) each, plus mentorship from a “music industry professional,” to help them kickstart their careers in music. Artists can enter to win the funds online through April 13 using an application process that includes uploading a 90-second performance video. OnlyFans CEO Tim Stokely wil...

Drake & Supah Mario Rule Hot 100 Songwriters, Producers Charts

Drake also joins The Beatles and Ariana Grande as the only acts to have claimed the Hot 100’s top three spots simultaneously. As Grande also co-wrote all three songs with which she achieved the feat (“7 Rings,” “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” and “Thank U, Next”), on the chart dated Feb. 23, 2019, she and Drake are the only soloists ever to rank at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 on the Hot 100 simultaneously as both billed recording acts and songwriters. (Beatles Paul McCartney and John Lennon co-wrote all three of the band’s songs in the Hot 100’s top three on March 14, 1964, the first time that an act scored such a triple: “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” at No. 1; “She Loves You,” at No. 2; and “Please Plea...

Meet the Nonprofits Feeding Thousands of Out-Of-Work Touring Staff

The live events industry breathed a sigh of relief when Congress passed the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant providing $15 billion to shuttered venues and independent promoters in December, but Espinoza says it’s “disrespectful” that no legislation passed to support event workers. While venues await their funding, Roadiecare is among several industry-adjacent nonprofits stepping up to feed and employ event workers who are without their usual income for the foreseeable future. Live event crew members were hit particularly hard by the pandemic due to complicated unemployment guidelines in the 2020 CARES Act. The pandemic relief legislation allowed for freelance workers to apply for Pandemic Unemploy...
