Grammys 2021: Body Count Win Best Metal Performance, Earning Ice-T His First Grammy in 30 Years

Body Count won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance on Sunday, earning frontman Ice-T his first award at the ceremony in 30 years. The band won the award for “Bum Rush”, from their 2020 album, Carnivore. The veteran metal act beat out fellow nominees Code Orange, In This Moment, Poppy, and Power Trip for the award. Power Trip were nominated following the tragic death of lead singer Riley Gale this past summer, and Ice-T would have been just as happy if they had won. As he told Heavy Consequence last year, he was equally rooting for Power Trip, telling us, “It would be just like I won the Grammy ’cause [Riley Gale] was my guy.” Prior to Gale’s passing, the Power Trip vocalist guested on Body Count’s song “Point the Finger”. The Grammy win for Body Count is their first as a band, and the fi...

The Strokes Win First-Ever Grammy for Best Rock Album

20 years into their celebrated career, The Strokes are finally Grammy winners. The New York greats took home Best Rock Album for The New Abnormal, and they gave as hilariously abnormal an acceptance speech as you’d hope they would. Despite a number of albums that many music fans would deem classics, The Strokes had never even been nominated for a Grammy prior to this year. Winning a golden gramophone after such a distinguished career was, understandably, an exciting moment for the group, who Zoomed in to accept the award from what appeared to be their personal basement pool hall. Amazingly, the group appeared to not catch the announcement at first, as Julian Casablancas, Nikolai Fraiture, and Fabrizio Moretti leaned into their computer to hear the winner. “Wow! Damn! Sorry we couldn’t hear...

Fans Choose Selena Gomez’s ‘Revelación’ EP as This Week’s Favorite New Music

The project, Gomez’s first-even Spanish EP, brought in 43.7% of the vote, beating out new music by Blackpink‘s Rosé (R), Nick Jonas (Spaceman), Imagine Dragons (“Follow You”/“Cutthroat”), and others. In recent weeks, Gomez also topped Billboard‘s new music poll with “Baila Conmigo,” her sultry reggaeton collab with Alejandro, and “Selfish Love,” her low-key bilingual dance track with DJ Snake. Revelación is Gomez’s first major release since her 2020 album, Rare, which earned the singer her third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. Placing a very close second on the past week’s tally with 43.6% of the vote was Rosé’s solo debut project, R, which features new songs “On the Ground” and “Gone.” She became the second me...

Fito Paez, Grupo Niche, Natalia Lafourcade Win Grammys Latin Categories

“I was very nervous,” Páez told Billboard over the phone minutes later. “There’s different music ‘schools’ in the world. I grew up with the American school,” added Páez, one of the great pioneers of melodic Argentine rock that bears British and American influences. “So to have that school give you a pat on the back is a great honor. A great honor that exceeds the award itself. It’s as if the entire country had enveloped me in its arms.” For Grupo Niche, perhaps Colombia’s most emblematic and symbolic salsa band, the win was fraught with emotion. The group, founded in Cali 40 years ago, won in the best tropical album category for 40, an album that pays homage both to its anniversary and to its late founder, Jairo Varela, who died in 2012. “It’s the first album we recorded that doesn’t inclu...

Laces Fuses Dreamy Synths With Choppy Bass On Debut EP, “Field Fallacy XVI”

It’s not everyday that a funeral videographer makes the switch into electronic music. But for Melbourne-based Laces, who first released music in 2018, this pivot has given birth to forward-thinking fusions of euphoric, Porter Robinson-styled synths and choppy, Cashmere Cat-reminiscent percussion.  With his latest six-track EP, Field Fallacy XVI, Laces builds upon this vision with newfound maturity. Completed during Melbourne’s second lockdown last fall, the project was released March 12th via NLV Records, Nina Las Vegas‘ imprint. The label has also supported Anna Lunoe, Kota Banks and UNIIQ3.  From the rich soundscape of “Sunvocus” to the introspective subtlety of “Drop My Cell” with Darcy Baylis, Field Fallacy XVI easily m...
