THE OFFSPRING Guitarist Looks Back On Massive Success Of ‘Smash’: ‘That Was A Real Crazy Time For Us’

THE OFFSPRING guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman spoke to Meltdown of Detroit’s WRIF radio station about the massive success of the band’s 1994 breakthrough album “Smash”. “Smash” was THE OFFSPRING‘s third LP and is often credited, along with GREEN DAY‘s “Dookie”, with the commercial resurgence and success of punk rock in the mid-’90s. “That was a real crazy time for us, because we went from being a band for 10 years where we played underground clubs and traveled across country in a van, and nobody knew who were, to, all of a sudden, traveling all around the world and doing it full time,” Noodles said (see video below). “When ‘Smash’ came out, we were on the road for a year and a ha...

COREY TAYLOR Reveals Concept For His Fifth Book

SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor has told Matt Pinfield of 95.5 KLOS‘s “New & Approved” series that he is “starting to get the itch” to write his fifth book. “I’ve got a concept in mind,” he said (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). “It has to do with social media and the age that we live in — the ‘outrage’ age. And it’s starting to really kind of form in my head. I may actually write it soon. Because it’s really kind of out of control out there right now. “I was reading about how Gen Z is trying to cancel Eminem because of one line that was in a Rihanna song that he did with her,” he continued. “And I’m just, like, is that where we are right now? I mean, at this point, you&...

Matt and Kim Cover Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me”: Stream

There’s perhaps no more classic anthem for International Women’s Day than the late Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me”. So to celebrate today’s festivities, Matt and Kim have flipped their name to Kim and Matt for a cover of the 1963 hit. Out via FADER, the duo’s cover of “You Don’t Own Me” sees drummer Kim Schifino providing lead vocals (natch). The home recording updates the song’s instantly recognizable R&B balladry with electronic drums and fuzzy synths. It captures all the norm-defying independence of the original for a modern audience that feels like it’s finally beginning to change those norms. “This song has always resonated with me lyrically, ever since I was a kid,” Kim said in a statement. “My dad raised me to not take shit from anyone and live the life I want to live. It break...

Helen Ballentine has announced the next project under her Skullcrusher banner. The Storm in Summer EP drops April 9th via Secretly Canadian, and has released the title track as an early preview. The five-track follow-up to her 2020 Skullcrusher EP finds Ballentine reeling from the spotlight after experiencing some unexpected success. As she explained in a statement, “I wrote ‘Storm in Summer’ after releasing the first Skullcrusher EP. Over that summer I thought a lot about what it means to really put myself out there and share something personal. I felt so vulnerable and overwhelmed by the fact that these songs I had written in private were exposed and likely being misinterpreted or disliked. I think the song really tries to communicate these anxieties in a cathartic way whi...

The Zamundan Palace in Coming 2 America Is Actually Rick Ross’ House

Eddie Murphy reclaimed his acting throne last week with the release of Coming 2 America, a sequel to the 1988 comedy flick. In it, Murphy stars as the iconic Prince Akeem Joffer of the fictional country of Zamunda, and he lives in an enormous palace with his ultra royal family. Not everything is as it seems in the movie, though. As it turns out, Zamunda was recreated in Georgia, not Africa, and the stunning mansion is the real-life home of Rick Ross himself. Ross’ home is a casual 45,000 square-foot mansion in Fayetteville, Georgia with 235 gorgeous acres surrounding it. There are 12 bedrooms, a dining room that seats up to 100 people, and a gold ceiling trim throughout the entire mansion. It’s an absurdly ornate palace both internally and externally, and the team behind Coming 2 America w...

Strait Talk With Dean Dillon As He Waits (and Waits) for His Hall Of Fame Induction

“That pretty much solidified the relationship between George and myself because he never forgot that,” recalls Dillon. “The next album, he’d call me up: ‘I’m cutting at so-and-so. Be in my office at 10 o’clock Monday morning. I want to hear everything you’ve got.’ And we did that for 40 years.” Strait, in fact, recorded over 70 of Dillon’s songs through the years, with 16 of them — including “I’ve Come To Expect It From You,” “Here for a Good Time” and “Nobody in His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her” — becoming hits. They’re a big reason Dillon experienced another life-changing moment, one he recognized as a landmark as it occurred. Country Music Association CEO Sarah Tr...
