After last week’s announcement by Daft Punk that legendary electronic music duo have split up after 28 years together, a flurry of tributes have been shared. One digital artist, however, took an appropriately high-tech route in his homage to the fabled French robots. Award-winning Irish computer artist Glenn Marshall has shared an artificial intelligence-generated music video for Daft Punk’s 2001 single “Voyager.” Without getting too technical, Marshall essentially trained a computer to create visuals inspired by Daft Punk. As Marshall explains in the description of the video, he used the phrases “robot headgear,” “robot heads,” “robot disco,” and “Tron” to guide the AI’s creation. The result ...
NFTs have been taking the dance music world by storm as of late. Many artists are finding that the digital collectibles are a great way to recoup some of the revenue lost due to the pandemic. Now, a recent story from Decrypt reports that a seller named “Daft Punk” has been gifting NFTs to a number of celebrities on the online marketplace Rarible. While the artwork featuring images of the duo was transferred to Mark Cuban, Soulja Boy, and Tyga, among other celebrities, only one has put theirs up for sale—Lindsay Lohan. The report shared that the listing was set to 8.8 ETH, which converted to around $15,000 when posted. However, at the time of this article’s publication, the listing for Lohan’s sale has been restricted from public viewing. Decrypt Simi...
RAMMSTEIN keyboardist Christian “Flake” Lorenz has confirmed that the band has recorded a new studio album during the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking to Motor.de, he said: “The fact that we couldn’t perform live increased our creativity. We had more time to think of new things and less distraction. As a result, we recorded an album that we hadn’t planned on.” Last October, RAMMSTEIN revealed that it had returned to La Fabrique studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the south of France. At the time, the band wrote in a social media post: “Sadly no tour this year – but it’s great to be back in the studio!” RAMMSTEIN‘s seventh, untitled album came out in May 2019 via UME/Spinefarm in Europe and Caroline Records in the U.S. The ba...
Alice Cooper says that his next studio album will be the first to feature the current lineup of his solo band. The legendary rocker spoke about his future plans just one day after the release of his latest LP. The Arizona resident’s first full-fledged tribute to the city that helped shape him, “Detroit Stories” was recorded with producer Bob Ezrin, mostly in Royal Oak with Detroit musicians and featuring a mix of original material alongside covers of songs by Bob Seger, the MC5, Mitch Ryder‘s DETROIT and OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY. During an appearance on the February 27 “After-School’s Out Special” episode of the “In The Trenches With Ryan Roxie” video podcast, hosted by Cooper guitarist Ryan Roxie, Alice revealed that he is already plotting hi...
This article originally appeared in the January 1988 issue of SPIN. Critics don’t like them. Black radio stations won’t play them. But in less than a year Public Enemy has managed to sell 275,000 copies of their debut LP, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, and has toured the U.S. and Europe with L.L. Cool J. They hit the stage like an alliance of shock troop and rap group. Behind them stand the S1Ws (which stands for Security of the First World), their gun-toting, Muslim backup crew (the guns are unloaded). The music is hard and the message is strong—maybe too strong for some. Chuck D is the meat of the message, and Flavor Flav is the spice—the younger sidekick who tempers the militance. “You wear a clock to know what time it is. And when you know what time it is, that means you are aware. And w...
Despite the billion dollar loss shouldered by Live Nation Entertainment this last year, the company’s CEO, Michael Rapino, has high hopes for 2021. He cites the imminent influx of demand for post-pandemic live events as a driving force expected to propel the events hub through “the light at the end of the tunnel,” according to IQ Magazine. Given the recent success of Live Nation’s stocks, it appears their predictions may not be unfounded. On February 25th, share prices skyrocketed above the $90 mark for the first time in the company’s history, reaching $91.80. IQ notes that this is nearly $15 higher than the price pre-pandemic. The change may have been spurred by the 48 hour-sellout of Live Nation-produced festival Creamfields, for which Alesso,...
In August 2020, prolific rapper Busta Rhymes collaborated with reggae singer Vybz Kartel for the “The Don & The Boss” off of Busta’s Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God album. Made for the club, this single offers, big booming bass and the swagged-out Jamaican dancehall roots of both artists. Grammy-nominated Canadian beatsmith Kaytranada has now dropped an inventive remix of the song. As a bona fide fan of Busta Rhymes, this isn’t the first time he’s flipped songs by the hip-hop legend, with past reworks of “What’s It Gonna Be?” “Oh My God” and “Bubblin.” This release comes just a week after Kaytranada dropped his new track “Caution.” It was also recently announced by Pitchfork that the gifted producer will be teaming up with Madlib for a new two-part documentary Dri...

Former MORBID ANGEL drummer Pedro “Pete” Sandoval has released an Instagram video in which he addresses some of the most commonly asked questions regarding his time with the legendary extreme metal outfit. In the two-minute clip, which can be seen below, Sandoval — who was forced to leave MORBID ANGEL in 2010 after undergoing surgery for a prolapsed disc — says: “I’m here to ask you for a very special favor. I have received many questions, and I have been tagged in many posts and videos, MORBID ANGEL photos and stuff, and I’ve been asked about who’s my favorite singer or which era is my favorite one — the era with David Vincent or with Steve Tucker. Well, I wanna tell you that I love both eras. I had fun. I had a great time working with David Vincent, an...
