GRiZ & Friends Curated an Inclusive Digital Community at Virtual Camp Kulabunga’s Winter Edition

Multifaceted producer and musician GRiZ constantly finds new ways to go beyond music to connect with his fans. In 2018, GRiZ and friends debuted an event like none other—Camp Kulabunga, where music is not the main focus. Camp Kulabunga was created with the intention of fostering wellness, self-empowerment, community and inclusion. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the retreat was completely reconfigured and transitioned to a virtual event for the first time in August 2020. Maintaining the core values and themes of the event—while unable to host in-person gatherings—was no easy feat. Despite the obstacles, the ambitious Kulabunga team remained persistent and successfully translated the interactive community to an online experience. With restrictions still in ...

Check Out the 3D-Rendered Early Concept Art for Excision’s Subsidia Records

When Excision announced the launch of his own record label back in September 2020, it was clear he had a vision. Before Subsidia Records became a powerhouse tastemaker in the electronic music scene, it existed only in a conceptual mood-board. The artwork, which the label shared today, shows an opulent cityscape that mirrors its status as a bass music utopia. Check out the early concept art below, courtesy of a serendipitous post by Subsidia’s Twitter account. Subsidia Records Subsidia Records Subsidia Records Subsidia Records Subsidia Records, of course, eventually kicked the EDM community’s door down with a stupefying 118-track debut compilation. Constructed as a four-part narrative, the expansive record explored a slew of electronic sub-genres, such as dubstep,...

Why I Made 52 EDM Songs in 52 Weeks

This is an opinion column. The thoughts and viewpoints expressed are those of the author, Yuan Chang, who produces electronic music under the moniker NUYA. Last year, I decided to take my biggest dream seriously. I made 52 songs in 52 weeks. My journey started in 5th grade, when I dreamt about making electronic music. My childhood was categorized by Playstation Ones, trance music and rice soup. I spent lots of time dancing to Malaysian black market techno CDs, running around in circles in the living room. I daydreamed about entering the talent show with my 5th grade crush and performing a choreographed dance to “Heaven” by DJ Sammy. When I turned 13, I was able to finally have my own email and sometime in middle school, my dad sent me an MP3 watch from Malaysia. It was way...

CHESTER BENNINGTON Was ‘On Top Of The World’ Two Nights Before His Suicide, Says His Longtime Friend

Sean Dowdell, the drummer for Chester Bennington‘s pre-LINKIN PARK band GREY DAZE, has once again opened up about his late friend’s mental state before his tragic death nearly four years ago. The singer’s passing was ruled a suicide soon after his body was found in July 2017 at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California. Bennington had been candid about mental-health battles in numerous interviews over the years, saying he grappled with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and substance abuse. Asked in a new interview with Anne Erickson of Audio Ink Radio if he was surprised that Chester ended his life, Dowdell said (hear audio below): “Over the years, he did struggle in several different areas. But in the weeks and months leading up to his life-ending choice, I...

VINNY APPICE: Why JEFF PILSON Isn’t Producing New LAST IN LINE Album

LAST IN LINE drummer Vinny Appice spoke to Metal From The Inside about the progress of the recording sessions for the band’s third album. The follow-up to 2019’s “II” is tentatively due next year via an as-yet-undetermined record label. “We were able to get together a number of times in Las Vegas [prior to the pandemic],” Vinny said (see video below). “When DEF LEPPARD played in Las Vegas, Viv [LAST IN LINE and DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell] would have a couple of days off, so we were there. Our singer, Andrew Freeman, he lives there. Now Phil [Soussan] lives there, the bassist. So two of them are there. So we were able to hook up in Vegas, hang out, and then when Viv finished the gigs, we were able to write and rehearse. And then, at the b...

RON KEEL Defends His Band’s Appearance At Sturgis Motorcycle Rally During Pandemic

Ron Keel has defended his band’s participation in last year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The event, which reportedly drew 462,000 biker enthusiasts to South Dakota in August, was described by some as a superspreading event, responsible for more than 260,000 cases of COVID-19 — or 19% of the 1.4 million new COVID-19 cases from August 2 to September 2, 2020, claimed researchers from San Diego State University and an independent research institute. “I’ve never heard any viable information that it was what they claimed was gonna be a superspreader event,” Ron told Shaggy of the 94.9 & 104.5 The Pick radio station in Idaho Falls, Idaho earlier this week (hear audio below). “There were a quarter million people there. We did five headline shows, and it was b...

Hermitage – MOONSPELL

RATING: 9/10 Imagine how joyous it would be to stumble across MOONSPELL for the first time today. Although perennially and inexcusably underappreciated, the Portuguese band have spent the last 30 years steadily building the richest and most impressive of catalogues. From their earliest efforts as a flamboyant black metal band to the many detours and experiments that have typified their pre- and post-millennial exploits, pretty much everything that has emerged under the MOONSPELL banner has oozed sincerity and class. They may be the underground’s undisputed chief goths, and “Hermitage” will undoubtedly satisfy those who crave a certain level of darkness and pomp, but it’s about time this band were recognized for their singular and remorseless originality. Both the mo...

J.I.D Pops Off on New Song “Skegee”: Stream

J.I.D. in “Skegee” video J.I.D packs a history lesson into his searing new track about man’s inhumanity to man with his new track “Skegee”. “Skegee” takes its title from the infamous and horrifying Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the African American Male. The experiment launched in 1932 under the auspices of science, but at its core it was nothing but cruelty. Researchers promised about 400 Black men with syphilis free health care, but instead of offering treatment, they watched hundreds of men die. Proving that the experiment had nothing to do with research, the project continued for decades after penicillin was known to cure syphilis. As The Associated Press reported in a shocking exposé in 1972, “even after penicillin became common, and while its use probably c...

Gérard Depardieu Charged with Rape and Sexual Assault

Gérard Depardieu, one of the most lauded French actors of his generation, has been charged with rape and sexual assault. As Variety notes, French press agency AFP broke the news. The charges against the 72-year-old stem from a 2018 incident. A then-22-year-old actress says she had been invited over to his Paris home to rehearse a play, and during that process was twice assaulted. In 2019, the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence, but the case was reopened in 2020, and criminal charges were ultimately filed last December. Depardieu’s lawyer, Herve Temime, said his client “completely rejects the accusations.” The attorney for the alleged victim asked that her client’s “private sphere will be respected.” AFP spoke to a “source close to the case,” who said that Depardieu is a frie...

HBO Max Will Not Remove Woody Allen Films

Despite producing a whole miniseries about the disturbing sexual assault allegations against Woody Allen, HBO has no plans to remove his films from its HBO Max library. On Sunday, February 21st, HBO and HBO Max debuted the first episode of Allen v. Farrow, a four-part docu-series investigating claims made by Allen’s adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow. Besides that, the flagship streaming platform from WarnerMedia currently hosts six Allen films, five of which star Dylan’s mother Mia: Another Woman, Broadway Danny Rose, Radio Days, Shadows and Fog, Scoop, and September. And HBO plans to keep them for the foreseeable future. “These titles will remain available in the library,” the company wrote in a statement (via The Wrap), “to allow viewers to make their own informed decisions a...

BTS Bring the Fire and Set the Night Alight on MTV Unplugged: Review

Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation: Recently, there’s been a growing divide between millennials and gen-z: side parts and skinny jeans are out. Different emojis are in. End up on the wrong end of the divide, and you’re in a tough spot. MTV Unplugged feels much more associated with the millennials, first airing in 1989 and rising to prominence in the ‘90s, ushering in many performances that have since become the stuff of legend. In 1992, Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album became the best-selling live album of all time. Mariah Carey’s episode marked a shift in her public reception and launched her cover of “I’ll Be There” to No. 1. MTV as a whole now often feels associated with a nostalgic time of TRL, flannels, and Blockbuster, but rest assured, millennials — if BTS is doing it, it’s still cool. The m...
