Courtney Barnett, Midnight Oil & More Sign Open Letter Calling For Australian Government Support

The likes of Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Courtney Barnett, Missy Higgins, Stella Donnelly, Lime Cordiale, The Presets and Midnight Oil have signed the document. In it, they say extending JobKeeper or providing direct industry support to thousands of vulnerable workers will keep the show on the road. “This doesn’t just make cultural sense, it makes economic sense,” the message continues. The numbers tell part of the story. The arts and entertainment sector contributes around A$15 billion ($11 billion) per year in GDP, employing close to 200,000 highly-skilled Australians, the open letter continues. Also, Australia Institute research has found that for every million dollars in revenue, arts and entertainment produce nine jobs while the construction industry only creates around one. Australi...

ALICE COOPER: Detroit Is The ‘Hard Rock Capital Of The United States’

Legendary rocker Alice Cooper will release his new studio album, “Detroit Stories”, on February 26 via earMUSIC. Named for the city that launched the original Alice Cooper group on the road to success, it follows 2019’s “Breadcrumbs” EP as a modern-day homage to the toughest and craziest rock and roll scene there ever was. Speaking about his inspiration for “Detroit Stories”, Alice said (see video below): “Well, I was born in Detroit, and Detroit was the, is the hard rock capital of the United States. Los Angeles had THE DOORS, and they were kind of a sexy rock and roll sound. San Francisco had THE GRATEFUL DEAD. New York had THE YOUNG RASCALS. Detroit had THE STOOGES, the MC5, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent. We were all hard rock — guit...

HALESTORM’s LZZY HALE: ‘I’ve Accepted Myself As An Artist And Creative Mind’

HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale has shared several photos from the songwriting sessions for the band’s follow-up to 2018’s “Vicious” album. The pictures, which were taken by HALESTORM guitarist Joe Hottinger, with whom Lzzy shares a home in Nashville, can be seen below. HALESTORM‘s new LP is once again being helmed by producer Nick Raskulinecz. The team first worked together on 2017’s “ReAniMate 3.0: The CoVeRs eP”, and according to Hale, he has become their “fifth member.” In a message accompanying the new Instagram photos, Lzzy wrote: “It’s been so freeing creating fresh music both at home and at @officialnickraskulinecz ‘s studio. Creation is where I’m happiest, especially since live shows are not an option rig...

BRIAN ‘HEAD’ WELCH: Why KORN Doesn’t Like Playing Encores

KORN guitarist Brian “Head” Welch has weighed in on the encore ritual at live music events. Returning to the stage for the encore has become all but a formality at almost every concert, whereby a band will finish its regular set, walk offstage and then come back a few minutes later and play another couple of songs. In fact, the encore — which comes from French and means “again” — has become so automatic that musicians know before a show even begins how many encores they’ll play and what songs they’ll include. Speaking to the “Bringin’ it Backwards” podcast, Welch expressed his dismay at the prospect of the auto-encore, saying (hear audio below): “We never have been an encore band, man. We would debate about it, saying, ‘It&#...

Methods Of Human Disposal – GRAVESEND

RATING: 8/10 If anyone is searching for a reason to be cheerful, “Methods Of Human Disposal” is probably not the album you need to be listening to right now. For the rest of us, resigned as we are to the fucked-up nature of things, this foul and violent tailspin through the blood-spattered streets of the rotting Big Apple is exactly like the kind of reverse affirmation the doctor would have ordered, had he not already overdosed on morphine. Bless him. GRAVESEND are a nasty bunch, and this is seething, unapologetic sonic savagery of the highest order. Thousands of bands deign to explore the darkest shadows of humanity, but very few of them sound even half as incensed and out of control as these native New Yorkers. Yes, there are strong elements of black and death metal wrestling...

Melvins’ Buzz Osbourne Recalls the Night Kurt Cobain Went to Jail for Vandalism

Before Kurt Cobain became a household name thanks to Nirvana, he was a teenage prankster in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. (Stars, they’re just like us?) Melvins frontman Buzz Osbourne remembers the night in May 1986 that he and pal Cobain, 19, “were out spray painting graffiti all over town” — antics that eventually landed one of them in jail. Telling the tale during Melvins’ Divine Monkeyshines: Valentine’s Day Special streaming event according to Ultimate Classic Rock, Osborne recalls Cobain getting busted and going to jail, while Osborne and their other compadre, former Melvins drummer Matt Dillard, got away. “We walked around the corner of this bank and all of a sudden there’s cops, a bunch of cops everywhere,” Osborne remembered. “And we just take off running in...

Blast Rites: February 2021’s Hottest Metal

Welcome to Blast Rites, SPIN’s monthly metal column! In this edition, we’ll dive headfirst into Blut Aus Nord visionary Vindsval returning to his roots, pummeling SoCal sludge, new heat from future Texas legends, a blackened RPG adventure, and a double dose of nasty grindcore. Read previous editions of Blast Rites here. Forhist — Forhist (Debemur Morti) In 1995, French black metal group Blut Aus Nord released their debut Ultima Thulée, which bandleader Vindsval composed in his mid-teens. While it resembles much of mid-’90s black metal with its bitterly cold sound and budget symphonic keyboards, it hinted at the expansive vision Vindsval would eventually wield as black metal’s dominating iconoclast. He is not a nostalgist, and even his more conventional works are made with an omnidirectiona...

Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra Changed the Landscape of R&B With Heavy Rock Influence

Frank Ocean may be one of the most popular musical acts of the 21st century, but back in 2010, the California-based, New Orleans-bred artist (formerly known as Christopher Breaux) was just getting his feet wet as a member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, led by fellow future Grammy winner Tyler, the Creator. Ocean came to life when he sang, but his reserved temperament (a likely byproduct of his clear ambivalence regarding spotlight) was overshadowed by Tyler’s electric personality, making personal connections with this man of mystery a slight challenge for fans. Yet, Ocean’s debut mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra (released on Feb. 16, 2011) provides a candid first glimpse into his mind. Dropped without advance warning on his Tumblr page—home base for several personal and professional musings...
