X Release Two B-Sides From Last Year’s Alphabetland

In a year of chaos, one of the best things that happened was when L.A. punk veterans X surprise-released a new album with their original members. Alphabetland was the ripping album we needed in the early pandemic days and thankfully, a few new tunes from those sessions have emerged. On Tuesday morning, X revealed B-sides “True Love, Pt. 3” and “Strange Life,” with the latter song featuring none other than the Doors’ Robby Krieger on slide guitar. “Robby came down on our last day in the studio and played on ‘Strange Life’. How fitting and how wondrous! And can there ever be enough ‘True Love’?” Exene Cervenka said in a statement. “Writing this reminds me of how much fun it was being in the studio with Rob Schnapf. He is a great producer and really helped make Alphabetland&nbs...

BTS Will Bring Their ‘Dynamite’ Energy To MTV Unplugged

BTS are no strangers to iconic MTV performances. Last August at the VMAs, they virtually spanned the globe for a neon-centric rendition of No. 1 hit “Dynamite,” making the event a suit-and-tie affair as they moved through its three minutes of disco-pop. Their latest venture with MTV promises to be a little more stripped-down, but equally iconic. That’s because few performances are more iconic than MTV Unplugged. On Tuesday, February 23, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook will bring their collective energy to an update of the storied series straight from Seoul, South Korea. MTV Unplugged Presents: BTS airs that night at 9 p.m. ET, and you won’t want to miss it. The special promises to bring fans a new look at the group’s latest album, Be, which dropp...

BTS Announce MTV Unplugged Performance

BTS have broken so many American records that it’s hard to remember there was a time where they weren’t one of the most popular international artists in the US. Now, the K-Pop superstars are cementing their place in western history by filming a “special edition” of MTV Unplugged, where they will join the ranks of iconic musicians like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Ms. Lauryn Hill. MTV Unplugged Presents: BTS was filmed in “intimate settings” in Seoul, South Korea. For the TV special, the newly minted 2020 Band of the Year will play live renditions of songs from their latest album BE (Essential Edition) — like the smash hits “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On” — as well as never-before-seen versions of their career-defining hits. MTV has promised that the worldwide music event will “build off the iconi...

R.I.P. Mary Wilson, Founding Member of The Supremes Dead at 76

Mary Wilson, founding member of the trailblazing Motown group The Supremes, has died at the age of 76. According to her publicist, Wilson passed away suddenly on Monday evening (February 8th) at her home in Henderson, Nevada. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed. In 1959, Wilson auditioned and was accepted into a singing group called The Primettes, pairing with three other then-unknown vocalists: Florence Ballard, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown. By 1962, the group had downsized to a trio (McGlown left to get married), signed with Motown Records, and changed their name to The Supremes. Within a year, they scored their first No. 1 hit with “Where Did Our Love Go” Between 1964 and 1969, The Supremes earned 12 No. 1 singles in total — a record for the most chart-topping songs among Am...

Andrew Bird and Jimbo Mathus Unveil New Song “Poor Lost Souls”: Stream

Andrew Bird and Jimbo Mathus wish blessings on Los Angeles’ homeless population on their new song “Poor Lost Souls”. The former Squirrel Nut Zippers bandmates have remained friends since parting ways in the ’90s, and Bird even joined SNZ for “Train on Fire” from their 2020 album Lost Songs of Doc Souchon. Now, the two songwriters are fulfilling a longtime ambition and collaborating on an album, These 13, which contains a baker’s dozen of folksy new tracks. The latest, “Poor Lost Souls”, takes place in LA, where, as the lyrics have it, you can “Look down and see the stars/ Look up and see the gold/ Look around and see these poor lost souls.” Mathus keeps up a steady groove of guitar, while Bird adds fiddle accents. The song highlights the absurdity of abundance surrounding need, w...

Foo Fighters Perform “Waiting on a War” on Fallon: Watch

Foo Fighters were guests on Monday night’s edition Jimmy Fallon, promoting their new album, Medicine at Midnight. After frontman Dave Grohl chatted it up with the Tonight Show host, the band performed their single “Waiting on a War”. The track is a stirring piece of a hopeful anxiety, with low synths and bass underscoring a tension that waits until the very end to break. As such, this wasn’t a face-melting rock show of a late night performance, with Foo Fighters instead delivering a relatively simple run-through of the song in a purple-lit set. That said, it’s a powerful enough song to still grab you even in such a straightforward set up — especially once Taylor Hawkins and the band got to rip into it during the outro. Prior to taking the remote stage with the rest of the Fighters, Gr...

Britney Spears’ Boyfriend Sam Asghari Says He’s Looking Forward to ‘Normal, Amazing Future’ Together

Following the Feb. 5 debut of the troubling Framing Britney Spears documentary, the singer’s longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari has issued a rare public statement about the couple’s life together. In a statement via People magazine published on Monday (Feb. 8), the 27-year-old Family Business actor and personal trainer offered up some comforting words of support for the star, whose turbulent rise to fame is chronicled in the hour-long special from the New York Times that takes a deep dive into her long-running conservatorship. “I have always wanted nothing but the best for my better half, and will continue to support her following her dreams and creating the future she wants and deserves,” Asghari reportedly said. “I am thankful for all of the love and s...

Later, introducing herself to judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, who look surprised, Conway introduces herself by saying, “I’m Claudia Conway. My parents are high-profile political figures.” In the ad, Perry tells her, “We want an American Idol.” Conway first suggested that she would appear on the show in a TikTok video last fall. Idol‘s new season will premiere at Feb. 14 on ABC. Conway made headlines in January after posting a series of videos appearing to show her mother yelling at her, insulting her and seemingly hitting her on TikTok. At the time, Conway said Kellyanne was “physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive.” Conway has occasionally posted about her disagreements with her mother on the social media pla...

The World’s Worst-Looking Website Has the World’s Largest Music Collection

Behind its bare and utilitarian user interface, the Internet Archive has stashed a certified treasure trove of music. It’s the product of the non-profit’s ambitions to build a digitized library to be used by the general public. A library that holds everything from e-books to news broadcast, to computer programs, to old websites, that would otherwise be lost in the ether of web data. So far they have amassed an impressive 70 petabytes of data (that’s 70 million gigabytes). The primary function of the archive is for research and draws 1.5 million curious minds, scholars and researchers daily. It feels like the actualization of what early adopters of the internet had hoped it would become: a free exchange of information and ideas devoid of the empty selfies and influencer marketing that seems...
