The Cult – CRYSTAL VIPER

RATING: 7/10 Poland is known more for its contributions to heavy metal’s more extreme ends. Its landmark bands in the black metal and death metal genres are plentiful. The fact is that there are still also numerous Polish bands paying tribute to metal’s more traditional sounds. CRYSTAL VIPER is now over a decade into their existence, and for the duration of that time, have proudly flown the flag for the power and speed of heavy metal’s yesteryear. The group’s latest record, “The Cult”, is fueled with fist-pumping adrenaline and shred-tastic riffs, but the repetition of the group’s approach does drain listening energy a bit by the end. The one constant since the group’s early beginnings has been the vocal presence of Marta Gabriel. From the ti...

QUEENSRŸCHE’s TODD LA TORRE: GUNS N’ ROSES’ ‘Appetite For Destruction’ Was ‘A Very Influential Album For Me’

QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Todd La Torre was interviewed on the latest episode of the GUNS N’ ROSES-centric “Appetite for Distortion” podcast. You can now listen to the chat below. Asked if it’s true that he used to perform GUNS N’ ROSES covers in his earlier days as a musician, Todd said: “Back in my teens, when ‘Appetite For Destruction’ came out, I was playing in a band as a drummer. And so we would cover ‘Rocket Queen’, we would cover ‘Mr. Brownstone’ [and] ‘Paradise City’. But I always liked to sing, even though I wasn’t the singer in the band, and there was a lot of stuff that I could mimic really well from, like, the song ‘Patience’ and experimenting with, ‘What makes this singer so...

Robert Fripp and Toyah Salute a Famous Misheard Lyric in Cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”: Watch

It’s Super Bowl Sunday in the United States, but in the UK it’s another super “Sunday Lunch” with Robert Fripp and Toyah. This time around, the King Crimson guitarist and his singer wife have a little fun with the Jimi Hendrix Experience classic “Purple Haze”, incorporating rock’s most famous misheard lyric into their performance. As she did last week for “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”, Toyah straps on a guitar for the Hendrix song. While Fripp is considered one of rock’s most innovative guitarists, Toyah is no Jimi Hendrix … or Robert Fripp, for that matter. But this is not an exercise in guitar histrionics, it’s an amusing take on an iconic rock song. Compared to their recent “Sunday Lunch” covers, their take on “Purple Haze” is rather subdued, both in physicality and Toyah’s attire. Where it ge...

SNL Top Highlights: Dan Levy Charms In Hosting Debut

Since kicking off Season 46 last fall, Saturday Night Live has been running closer to business-as-usual than almost any other late-night show during the pandemic. Still, if you look closely, there are differences: Their audience size has been reduced, which has often made studio reactions more muted; the schedule has featured more episodes in a row and yet longer breaks in between; and the host bookings feel less tethered to the usual promotional cycles of big movies, TV show premieres, and awards season. Case in point: 10 months after Schitt’s Creek ended, four months after the show’s historic Emmys sweep, and two months after his co-starring role in Hulu’s Happiest Season, Dan Levy took a victory lap this week with his first Saturday Night Live hosting gig. In other words, he wasn’t real...

Timothée Chalamet is Edward Scissorhands’ Son in New Super Bowl Commercial: Watch

Timothée Chalamet stars as Edward Scissorhands’ son, Edgar Scissorhands, in a new Super Bowl commercial for Cadillac. The Dune actor is joined by Winona Ryder, who famously starred as Kim Boggs in Tim Burton’s original Edgar Scissorhands movie. Young Edgar faces many of the same challenges as his famous pops. Throughout the 60-second advert, he mistakenly cuts a bus pull chord, pops a football, and disrupts a school science presentation (fuckin’ magnets, how do they work?). He is, however, a talented sandwich maker, and thanks to Cadillac’s hands-free driving technology, he’s also able to drive a car. Compared to most high-priced Super Bowl ads staring A-list talent, Chalamet’s Edgar Scissorhands certainly hits the mark. And with original star Johnny Depp currently in Hollywood e...

I Fought the Law: Our 1991 Slick Rick Feature

This article was originally published in the August 1991 issue of SPIN. AT 5:28 P.M. on Tuesday, July 3, 1990, officers Rodriguez and Wong of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx got the call. “MB shots . . . six rounds . . . in black Toyota Camry . . . possibly fled on Parkway . . . 241 and White near OTB.” A black male (MB) had fired six rounds at East 241st Street and White Plains Road, near the Off-Track Betting outlet, before fleeing in a Toyota toward the Bronx River Parkway. It wasn’t a Toyota, but otherwise the radio alert matched the testimony given later by the gunman, one Ricky Walters, following his arrest. “I was driving a rent-a-car Dodge Shadow at East 241st Street and White Plains Road when I saw my cousin Mark,” Walters told the cops. “I drove home with my girlfriend, Lisa ...

Ice Cube To Meet With Joe Biden To Discuss “Contract With Black America”

Source: NBC / Getty Right before last year’s Presidential elections Ice Cube caught the wrath of the culture when Donald Trump’s camp revealed they were allegedly working with the Hip-Hop icon on his “Contract With Black America.” Though Cube defended himself and explained he wasn’t supporting Trump’s re-election and only spoke to the Trump administration after the Biden camp passed on a meeting, everyone felt that he was ultimately used by Trump to help him get some of the Black vote in the coming elections. Now that the former Racist-In-Chief is out of office and the Biden Harris administration is in full swing, TMZ is reporting that Cube will indeed be meeting with the new Head of State to discuss the contract he’s been pitching for a while now. During an interview with Ryan Cameron for...

Source: FOX / Getty Nick Cannon is the latest high-profile celebrity to be stricken by the COVID-19 condition. With the media personality and television host taking off time to properly quarantine, Niecy Nash has been tapped to temporarily host The Masked Singer ahead of its upcoming season. Variety got the exclusive scoop on the big news after Cannon shared that he was out for the count due to contracting the virus. As the outlet reports, shooting for season five begins this Thursday (Feb. 4) and will continue on with Nash taking over the hosting duties as Cannon recovers. The popular musical competition show features celebrities hidden under lavish costumes as a panel of celebrity judges and the audience attempts to guess who is under the mask. In times past, folks such as Lil Wayne, Ice...

On Sight: Young Thug Likes Lil Uzi Vert’s New Diamond Dome Piece

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Lil Uzi Vert took the jewelry game to the next (and unnecessary) level when he implanted a $24 million dollar pink diamond on his forehead a la Vision in The Avengers. While most of the world reacted with shock and disbelief, Young Thug for one was a fan of the move and praised the Philadelphia’s new and “innovative” manner of stuntin.’ Taking to IG to touch on yesterday’s hottest Hip-Hop news, Thugger threw his support behind Vert’s new iced out forehead saying, “”Slime rule the world, believe it. Young n***as out this motherf*cka spending $24 million on they heads. N***a put $24 M on the front of they head. Y’all hoes get in line.” Why we feel like Thugger might follow suit and start putting ice chips all over his brows and cheek bones? Just sayin.’ Though...

Mr. Me Too: Funkmaster Flex Got Lipo Because He Heard Kanye And Drake Did It [Video]

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty In this age the genre of Rap is more about the look than the talent. Apparently Funkmaster Flex took this to heart when he recently went under the knife, on the ‘Gram. As spotted on Hot New Hip Hop the legendary DJ paid a visit to Gillie The Kid and Wallo for an installment of the Million Dollarz Worth Of Game podcast. While the duo got him to explain his indelible disdain for Jay-Z it is his reasoning for getting liposuction that has left the culture scratching their heads. During the interview he made it clear that it was far from a rash decision and he actually did a lot of homework to ensure it was right for him. He stated that diet and exercise still did not solve for some of his problem areas thus the infamous appointment. Flex went on to post t...

The Bloody Beetroots Teams up with Teddy Killerz for Debut Drum & Bass Single “Elevate”

Electro icon The Bloody Beetroots is well known for his raw and gritty sound, teeming with impeccable sound design and crushing bass. It only seems natural, then, for the veteran producer to venture into the world of drum & bass, where his approach to production would feel right at home. The Bloody Beetroots did just that, teaming up with drum & bass trio Teddy Killerz for his genre debut, “Elevate.” A dark neurofunk banger through and through, “Elevate” is an immense effort from the all-star pairing of The Bloody Beetroots and Teddy Killerz. High-octane from start to finish, the new single is a certified dance floor destroyer, with its distorted reese basses and relentless drum breaks. “2020 brought a lot of changes and widened my sound palette,” says Th...
