The Real Cure: A Clockwork Orange’s Missing Ending

Page to Screen is a recurring column in which CoS Editorial Director Matt Melis explores how either a classic or contemporary work of literature made the sometimes triumphant, often disastrous leap from prose to film.  Novelists can’t choose how they’ll be remembered — that is, which of their creations will be favored after they’ve, to borrow a phrase, snuffed it. Once wielding autocratic control over every thought, action, and detail attributed to their characters, they cede that unique monopoly upon publication. It then belongs to others, who, if sales are strong, will reimagine those stories — those very intimate and specific ideas — a million times over in infinitely different ways. The writer goes from being a de facto Bog or God to, in extreme cases, a slave to press clippi...

Meskerem Mees Unveils New Song “Seasons Shift”: Stream

21-year-old songwriter Meskerem Mees drew international attention with her first single “Joe”, and now she’s proving she’s a talent to watch with her new song “Seasons Shift”. Mees enchants from the moment she opens her mouth, with an ethereal voice and cosmopolitan accent (she’s Belgian with Ethiopian roots). Alongside her friend the cellist Febe Lazou, she crafts gentle music out of turbulent emotions. “Seasons Shift” is more about a variable person than the changing weather, with lyrics that track differences over time. She sings of someone who “got serious in December/ Lonely in July, though you wouldn’t tell me why/ It might have been easier just to call me but you preferred to cry.”  At first she seems to be sketching out a failed relationship, but as the song progresses, her co...

YouTuber Masterfully Performs Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” as a Motörhead Song: Watch

YouTuber Denis Pauna imagines an alternate universe where hit songs were recorded by different artists. For his latest hypothetical, Pauna pondered, “What if Motörhead wrote ‘Personal Jesus’ by Depeche Mode?’” That’s the title of the Croatian musician’s latest pseudo-mashup cover. As if to discover the answer to his own question, he dressed up in full Motörhead regalia — even donning Lemmy Kilmister’s signature mutton chops — and played Depeche Mode’s classic in the vein of the British heavy metal pioneers. As Pauna proves, if Motörhead had written “Personal Jesus”, it would have still been an awesome song. Over a propulsive riff and the crushing Kilmister bass tone — all played by Pauna himself — hearing the chorus rendered through his spot-on Lemmy bark is truly satisfying. It made us cu...

Steven Wilson Transforms into Brad Pitt, David Bowie, Donald Trump, and More in “Self” Video: Watch

Prog rocker Steven Wilson has unveiled a disturbing deepfake music video for his latest single, “Self”. The track appears on Wilson’s new album, The Future Bites, which was released last week. Following the post-modern dystopia theme of the album, Wilson used deepfake facial mapping technology for the video, transforming himself into a motley crew of notable celebrities, politicians, and musicians. If you’ve ever wanted to see Donald Trump go prog, now’s your chance. The likes of Joe Biden, David Bowie, Hillary Clinton, Brad Pitt, Mark Zuckerberg, Robert Downey Jr., and more appear in Wilson’s influencer choir. The deepfake imaging falls somewhere between convincing and downright terrifying — maybe more toward the latter, since Wilson’s face changes but his hair stays the same, resulting i...

Joey Jay Is Bumping Lady Gaga, Pabllo Vittar & More For Her ‘Drag Race’ Elimination Playlist

Even if she didn’t walk away with the crown, Jay can confidently walk away with the title of trade of the season, from queens and fans alike. As silly as that title may be, Jay says she’s actually been quite touched being referred to as “trade,” considering that she doesn’t necessarily fit the hyper-masculine standard for the term. “I will disagree that I am trade, but I will take it,” she explains. “I just think it’s showing like we’re growing as a community, that you don’t have to be like a 300 lb. macho-man who played some football to be considered very attractive.” At the end of the day, Jay may be disappointed that she couldn’t go further, but says the fact that she was able to represent a very different sty...

State of Mine’s Garth Brooks Cover ‘Rolls’ to No. 1 on Hot Hard Rock Songs

The track is the first cover to top Hot Hard Rock Songs dating to the tally’s June 2020 inception. Covers have been more common, however, atop Hard Rock Digital Song Sales, where Trans-Siberian Orchestra‘s “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” first recorded by TSO members in the band Savatage, led over the 2020-21 holiday season. Before that, Nickelback‘s take on The Charlie Daniels Band‘s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” reigned last August. Similarly, Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers‘ update of Goo Goo Dolls‘ “Iris” topped Rock Digital Song Sales in November 2020. Brooks’ original “Thunder,” which he co-wrote with Pat Alger and released on his second LP, 1990’s No Fences, ruled Hot Country So...

Charli XCX Pays Tribute to SOPHIE: ‘I Can’t Encapsulate What a Unique Person She Was’

Charli XCX, who collaborated with avant-pop producer/artist SOPHIE on nearly a dozen tracks, shared a statement about her late friend, saying, “I wish I had told her more how special she was, not just her music, but her as a person. I love you and I will never forget you, Sophie.” SOPHIE died from an accidental fall in Greece at the age of 34. The statement continued, “It’s really hard for me to sum up the special connection I felt with such an amazing person who completely changed my life,” Charli XCX wrote. “There are so many memories, so many small details, so many different views and incredible feelings and stories. It’s impossible to summarize the journey I went on with Sophie. Even the most insignificant things felt enormous. I can’t explain how I feel and I can’t enca...

Sen. Susan Rubio Calls for FBI, Dept. of Justice to Investigate Marilyn Manson

Evan Rachel Wood named former fiance Marilyn Manson as her alleged abuser in a Feb. 1 Instagram post, and California’s Sen. Susan Rubio is demanding that the shock rocker be investigated. The Westworld actress on Feb. 2 shared a letter that Rubio sent to Monty Wilkinson, the acting U.S. Attorney General, and Director Christopher Wray of the FBI on Jan. 21, asking for action to be taken, noting that several victims in her state had made “multiple allegations” against the musician and actor. “The alleged victims have named Marilyn Manson, also known as Brian Hugh Warner, as the perpetrator. I ask that the U.S. Department of Justice meet with the alleged victims immediately and investigate these accusations,” she began her letter. You Deserve to Make Money Even W...
