If you care at all about democracy and the way our world works, you should be watching Real Time with Bill Maher. As January 2021 marks the show’s 19th season, it’s one of the most in-demand shows on air. With good reason. What the world needs now—right now—is someone brave enough to fight for the truth. Someone who will put himself out there, be willing to be despised as much as he’s revered, and say the things that make us ponder and squirm. From religion to healthcare, mass media to political correctness, Maher enlists experts to help start the all-essential conversations. He leaves it up to you, the thinker, to do the rest. Nineteen seasons, FYI, doesn’t happen to any TV show by accident. Before Real Time there was his round-table, idea mosh pit Politically Incorrect (1993 – 2001...
At this point, there’s been so many printings, pressings and reissues of Nirvana’s 1989 debut Bleach that it’s nearly impossible to keep track of which is what and for collectors, worth how much. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, another version of the Sub Pop record (aka the album that started it all) will be issued as a limited-edition cassette. The cassette, which will be featured as Love Buzz Red, will be sold through Tapehead City. There’s only 500 of them, so if you want to grab the item, you’re going to have to move quickly. You can preorder the cassette here. The Tapehead City description of the release reads as follows: “Bleach” was the debut album from Nirvana released on June 15, 1989, by Sub Pop records and Love Buzz was their first single. Kurt Cobain died 27 ye...
New music from dance-punk legend The Bloody Beetroots has been rare as of late, but longtime fans can breathe a sigh of relief after Australian producer JACKNIFE debuted their forthcoming collaboration. The rising young gun, who has released music with Malaa and BIJOU, among others, recently took the stage at Brisbane’s Eatons Hill Hotel for the venue’s 10th Anniversary NYD party. The Bloody Beetroots shared a preview of his own, confirming the song’s title, “Jericho.” The fabled Italian electronic music producer only released two original tracks in 2020, teaming...
“34+35” was already one of the explicit standouts from Ariana Grande’s Positions album, allowing the pop superstar to express her sexual freedom while hitting the top 10 of the Hot 100. With this new remix, Grande has called upon two masters of the double entendre: Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion both cruise over the beat and offer some righteous witticisms in their verses, while also each referencing the desire to keep their neighbors up. Selena Gomez, “De Una Vez” Last year, Selena Gomez reflected on her success with her Rare album in a Billboard interview, while also stating that she planned to “challenge” herself on her next project. “De Una Vez,” Gomez’s first Spanish-language song in nearly a decade, certainly delivers upon that ambition: whether or not the song previews a larger pr...
“Africa has birthed a lot of special talents that have been creating amazing music for a long time and we’re happy to finally have the platforms and the means to share our music across the continent and to the rest of the world,” Tems tells Billboard. “[The Africa Rising program] allowed my music to reach new listeners and [has] also given my supporters and myself something to be excited about in these tough times.” ALL EYES ON AFRICA Over the past several years, labels, distributors and industry trade groups have turned their focus towards the African music market, and Apple Music is not the only streaming service making inroads on the continent, or supporting its local artists. (Tems, for example, was also included as part of the latest class of YouTube’s Foundry program, whi...
You followed an earlier three-year recording break with a five-year interlude. Are these breaks intentional or happenstance? As far as length of time, it’s not really intentional. I’ll just chill for a second and then a little break turns into a longer break. But as long as it turns out to be, I do feel breaks are necessary. Taking breaks when you’re younger, it feels different than when you’re older. For one thing, getting yourself back into the swing of things is different, both physically and vocally. I’m starting to understand that now. It’s a different kind of building back up as you get older … even things like getting up earlier and doing interviews. How has the pandemic inspired and challenged your singing and songwriting? I’m amazed people are telling me I sound stronger and...
“I have to say you’re kind of like my good luck charm,” Astin told Clarkson when she praised his cover, noting that he also did “Since U Been Gone” in the first PP movie and on the soundtrack. But, he added, “I don’t know if you know this, but your songs are hard!” Clarkson agreed, joking that she usually figures that out when she goes on tour and realizes she has to sing “all 17 of these songs every single night! Like over and over. That’s when I lower the [register of the] songs.” Astin said his moment with Zoey was especially special because it’s the first time that Levy’s character has sung a duet with someone on the show. In the same episode, Clarkson chatted with 9-1-1 star Jennifer Love Hewitt about the ti...
