Jazmine Sullivan: Heaux Tales

Watching Jazmine Sullivan thrill herself with her own ability is like watching Spider-Man gleefully swing from skyrise to skyrise, not an enemy in sight. Just look at Sullivan shimmy on a recent NPR Music Tiny Desk (Home) concert as she sings, “I’m hoping these titties can get me out the city,” her voice tickling its lower depths. Her eyes widen with feigned confusion when she coos the words, “I don’t know where I woke up.” When she belts, “Don’t have too much fun without me,” from Heaux Tales’ outstanding single “Lost One,” she throws her head, arms, and palms back, as if offering herself to something bigger. Heaux Tales itself looks to something bigger, too, beyond Sullivan as its subject or star. Her fourth album is expansive and inclusive, embodying as many women’s insights into love a...

Hardcore Act Thirdface Announce Debut Album, Unleash Single “Villains!”: Stream

Nashville hardcore group Thirdface have announced their debut full-length, Do It With a Smile, which will arrive on March 5th via Exploding in Sound Records. In advance of the LP, they’ve unleashed the song ‘Villains!” as the first single. For many, this ripping track will their introduction to Thirdface, and a fine introduction it is. As the song title implies, “Villains!” is loud and grinding, anchored by swirling bass work and bold declarations against the oppressive forces of society. “When writing ‘Villains!’ I was watching a lot of [the anime series] Fist of the North Star, which gives the song its title,” vocalist Kathryn Edwards told BrooklynVegan. “I wanted to write a song about tearing some evil down from its pedestal like Ken from FOTNS would do. But decided to speak on reality ...

At Monday’s Gotham Awards, Simone Ledwick Boseman accepted an award on behalf of her late husband Chadwick Boseman. Via EW, she offered a tearful tribute honoring “the most honest person I’ve ever met.” Boseman had been nominated for Best Actor for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and while Riz Ahmed eventually won for Sound of Metal, Boseman received a posthumous Actor Tribute. His widow made a virtual appearance, offering one of the most emotionally raw speeches of this or any other award ceremony. “He was the most honest person I’ve ever met,” she said, “because he didn’t just stop at speaking the truth, he actively searched for it: In himself, in those around him and in the moment, The truth can be a very easy thing for the self to avoid, but if one does...

NOFX announce new album, unveil single “Linewleum” featuring Avenged Sevenfold: Stream

Los Angeles punk veterans NOFX have announced their 14th full-length LP, titled Single Album. In advance of its February 26th release, frontman Fat Mike and co. have unveiled the single “Linewleum” featuring contributions from members of Avenged Sevenfold. Single Album marks NOFX’s first LP since 2016’s First Ditch Effort. It is also the band’s first album since members of NOFX made highly insensitive onstage comments about the country music fans who died in the horrific Route 91 Harvest music festival massacre in Las Vegas in 2017. While the band apologized profusely, they were dropped from their own Punk in Drublic festival’s lineup and had a series of tour dates canceled. The new single, “Linewleum”, is actually an update of NOFX’s song “Linoleum”, which was the lead track on their 1994...

Jimi Hendrix’s Brother, Niece Found in Contempt of Court for Violating Trademarks

Tina Hendrix tells Billboard that her family is “devastated and disappointed about the judge’s decision and I strongly feel that it was incorrect and unjust for several reasons.” The contempt ruling against Leon and Tina Hendrix follows a lengthy court battle that began in 2017 when Experience Hendrix LLC — the sole owner of the late rocker’s musical compositions, sound recordings, copyrights and trademarks — and Authentic Hendrix LLC, the licensing arm for Hendrix, filed an infringement case. Experience and Authentic Hendrix sued Leon Hendrix and a business associate for trademark infringement, deceptive acts and false advertising, among other claims. In Oct. 2019, the court entered a permanent injunction against Leon Hendrix and his corporate entities, finding they...

Changes at Capitol Studios: Consolidation, Layoffs, New Role for Studio Manager Paula Salvatore

The historic Capitol Studios in Hollywood, home to recordings by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bob Seger, Tony Bennett,  Ray Charles and thousands of other artists, is undergoing some major changes. Among the moves is consolidating administration services across all of the North American studios. Parent company Universal Music Group operates three studios in Los Angeles, one in Nashville, one in New York and at least one each in Canada and Mexico. That switch led to a shift in roles for longtime vp/studio manager Paula Salvatore, who recently celebrated her 30th year with the studio. A source says Salvatore, who could not be immediately reached for comment, will continue working with the studio in a different capacity still to be announced. As word spread of Salvatore’s departur...

THE DARKNESS Frontman Wants Next Album To Be ‘Really Uplifting’

Justin Hawkins of British rockers THE DARKNESS has confirmed to Dawn Osborne of TotalRock Radio that he and his bandmates have begun compiling ideas for the follow-up to 2019’s “Easter Is Cancelled” album. “The idea of the next record, for me, is I’m only writing stuff that I really, really am gonna have fun singing and playing,” the frontman said (see video below). “So I just want it to be a really uplifting album. I don’t want it be like one of these lockdown albums that is all about the situation. THE DARKNESS‘s job is to provide some kind of relief from the world and something uplifting that doesn’t refer to the misery and the uncertainty and the suffering and all that we have had to endure. Our music should be aspirational an...

MICHAEL ANTHONY Says He Spoke With ALEX VAN HALEN Right After EDDIE VAN HALEN’s Death

In a new interview with Guy “Favazz” Favazza of the St. Louis, Missouri radio station KSHE 95, former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony was asked about Wolfgang Van Halen‘s recent revelation that Eddie Van Halen had contemplated a “kitchen-sink tour” that would have included Anthony, as well as vocal turns from both Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth. There was even talk about bringing back Gary Cherone, who sang with VAN HALEN on one poorly received album, 1998’s “Van Halen III”. “I actually did get a call from [the VAN HALEN] camp — actually, [from manager] Irving Azoff‘s office — I don’t know… three or four years ago… a few years ago now,” Michael said (hear audio below). “And they did ask me about coming back and...

TED NUGENT Says ‘DONALD TRUMP Did Not Incite Violence,’ Blames ‘Antifa’ And ‘Black Lives Matter’ For Storming U.S. Capitol

Ted Nugent says that President Donald Trump did not incite last week’s Capitol riot and has blamed the violence on Antifa and Black Lives Matter. Last Wednesday, Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, vandalized the building and assaulted police officers. One woman was fatally shot by police and three people died of apparent medical emergencies. A Capitol police officer died after responding to the mob. Many top political figures have accused Trump of personally inciting the attack by repeatedly intimating that his followers should take action in order to demand legislators address his baseless claims of voter fraud. At a rally preceding the riot, Trump gave an inflammatory speech, urging the crowd to go to the Capitol, “show strength” and “fight much harder....
