While watching Bridgerton last week, I jokingly referred to the series as “the fancy British sex show” to friends on a text thread. Although that’s perhaps reductive, the description is fairly accurate: Netflix’s new Victorian drama is filled with sex, scandal, pearl clutching, and opulence. Yet, at the same time, it’s also a lot of fun, which is why I happened to binge most of the season in a day. (It was a welcome distraction during a stressful week.) However, there are deeper truths underneath Bridgerton’s addictive exterior. Sure, at first blush, it’s a Victorian romance with a Gossip Girl subplot, but the series cuts much deeper than that. At its core, Shondaland’s latest drama stealthily reveals the damaging lies and practices perpetuated by the patriarchy, particularly the struggle ...
Today, January 4th, is the 50th anniversary of Loretta Lynn‘s breakthrough album Coal Miner’s Daughter. To celebrate, she’s announced her new full-length, Still Woman Enough, as well as shared a fresh take on an old favorite, “Coal Miner’s Daughter (Recitation)”. Per USA Today, Still Woman Enough arrives March 19th via Legacy Recordings. The LP comes with 13 songs that span originals, covers of American standards, and updated looks at Lynn’s storied discography. The title track references her 1966 single “You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man)”. It was written by Lynn and her daughter Patsy Lynn Russell, and features vocals from fellow country heavyweights Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood. As if that weren’t enough, Margo Price hops on a cover of Shel Silverstein’s 1971 s...
During NBC’s New Year’s Eve special, Blake Shelton unveiled his latest single, “Minimum Wage.” The song, which features lyrics like, “Your love is money / Yeah, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage,” was quickly met with backlash online. Critics called out the country crooner for being insensitive, particularly at a time where many have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Twitter users also pointed out that he has a net worth of $100 million, while his fianceé Gwen Stefani (whom the song is presumed to be about) is worth about $150 million. The “rave edition” of Grimes’ excellent 2020 LP Miss Anthropocene was released to celebrate the new yer, and while the remix project features contributions from Rezz, Bloodpop and Richie Hawtin, Channel Tres’ reworking of “Delete Forever” turns a mournful anthem into something slinky, breathless and a bit more human. Smith & Thell, “Radioactive Rain” The Swedish duo of Maria Jane Smith and Victor Thell start off 2021 promisingly with new single “Radioactive Rain,” which adds some more stomp to their folk-tinged pop recipe ahead of their sophomore album, Pixie’s Parasol. Whenever festivals open back up, expect this one to ring out lovingly. Kelley later recalled a conversation he had with Hubbard in September about creating and exploring “freedom for ourselves in addition to what we do with FGL” and supporting each other as they navigate their separate musical journeys. Kelley hinted that his solo releases, which Hubbard has already listened to and said “sounded amazing,” could be out by summer 2021. “Like BK said, timing’s everything and we’ve been on a 10-year journey together. We wouldn’t change it for the world. And we’re gonna continue our journey,” Hubbard responded. “We’ve kind of created this freedom around ourselves to where we can do whatever we want to do creatively and musically, so it’s a lot of fun…. It’s a beautiful place ...
No, his “man parts” did not get burned. As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis took to Instagram on Sunday (Jan. 3) to give fans an update on his recovery process, three weeks after a bonfire accident that left him hospitalized with burns that covered 25% of his body. In the clip, he shared that it’s the first day he’s been out of bed and the day before was the first time his wounds did not need to be scrubbed. “That’s a huge relief because scrubbing my wounds is by far the most painful part of the recovery process,” he shared. “I’m very thankful that my face did not get burned and, for whatever reason, it’s a very common question so I should let you know that my man parts did not get burned,” he continued. “I did lose 20 pounds from being stuck in bed for three...
Last November’s finale of the Showtime drama The Affair included a cover of the Waterboys’ “The Whole of the Moon” by none other than Fiona Apple with Phoebe Bridgers on backing vocals. Now, a video of an emotive Apple cutting the tune in the studio has surfaced. The caption for the video, which was apparently shot and posted by filmmaker Zelda Hallman, explains that Apple asked Tony Berg to produce her version of the 1985 single. He recruited all-star players including drummer Matt Chamberlain, Patrick Warren, Ethan Gruska, guitarist Wendy Melvoin from Prince’s band the Revolution, and of course, Bridgers. “This was the first time she had met Wendy and Phoebe and fell in love with both of them,” Hallman’s statement accompanying the video says. This collaborat...
Steve Earle & The Dukes’ J.T. album, a collection honoring Earle’s late son, Justin Townes Earle, is out today, on what would have been Justin’s 39th birthday. The record, which covers 10 songs from Justin’s discography, along with the elder Earle’s heartfelt tribute, “Last Words,” arrives nearly five months after Justin Townes Earle’s death from an accidental overdose. “His best songs were as good as anybody’s,” Earle said in a New York Times interview. “He was a way better singer than I am, a way better guitar player, technically, than I am. His fingerpicking could be mind-blowing.” In addressing Justin’s struggle with his demons, Earle says his son was “just one of those people that never felt like he was enough.” J.T. was recorded at New York’s Electric Lady Studios...

Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz Some folk just have to get their party on, even during a pandemic. The latest, and certainly not the last, to make such a questionable decision is Sean “Diddy” Combs, who threw a birthday bash for his son Justin’s 27th birthday in Miami. Nope, it was not an intimate gathering in the slightest. According to TMZ it went down Wednesday night (Dec. 30) in Miami, Florida, and there wasn’t a mask in sight—besides the servers. Per TMZ: Diddy led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” to Justin during the Wednesday night celebration that started at Swan restaurant, and eventually moved to Victory Restaurant & Lounge. Both joints were packed to the gills with folks popping bottles and a custom Dior cake for Justin. It’s 2020, so the first thing that hits y...
