After news of Gerry Marsden’s death broke on Sunday, Paul McCartney took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Gerry and the Pacemakers frontman. “Gerry was a mate from our early days in Liverpool. He and his group were our biggest rivals on the local scene. His unforgettable performances of You’ll Never Walk Alone and Ferry Cross the Mersey remain in many people’s hearts as reminders of a joyful time in British music…” he wrote alongside a backstage photo from the Beatles tour with Gerry and the Pacemakers and Roy Orbison in 1963. “My sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family. See ya, Gerry. I’ll always remember you with a smile.” See his thoughtful post below. My sympathies go to his wife Pauline and family. See ya, Gerry. Gerry Marsden has died at the age of 78. The Gerry and the Pacemakers frontman was battling an infection in his heart and passed away Sunday morning. Marsden formed the Pacemakers in 1959, and the Liverpool band became the second signed to the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein. They released their debut single “How Do You Do It?” in March 1963, which soared to the top of the charts; however, their best-known song is a cover. A few months after releasing their No. 1 single, the Pacemakers released a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” originally from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein 1945 musical Carousel. The song ended up becoming Liverpool football club’s anthem, and Lana Del Rey recently recorded an a cappella version of it to accompany an upcoming documentary about ...

It didn’t take long for Nandi Bushell to share her first cover of 2021. On Sunday, the 10-year-old musical prodigy uploaded a performance of Blur’s “Song 2,” in which she plays drum, bass, guitar, and sings while donning a pretty fierce Union Jack outfit. “This week I have been learning about #Britpop, the 90’s and about this awesome battle between 2 bands called @blurofficial and @oasis,” she tweeted alongside the clip. “The 90 [sic] seemed like a fun time for music. Wahoo!!! Loving this song” See Bushell crush yet another cover below. Bushell said goodbye to 2020 with a sweet sing along accompanied by her family. “I wrote this song for you all and asked my family to jam it with me. Back in September, Brandi Carlile released A Rooster Says as part of Record Store Day 2020’s second drop. The 12″ LP includes versions of “Black Hole Sun” and “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” recorded with Soundgarden’s surviving members; however, only those who were able to snag a physical copy were fortunate enough to hear the songs. Luckily for the rest of us, the singer-songwriter decided to end 2020 with a little surprise. On New Year’s Eve, she made the two-song album available via streaming services. Listen to Carlile’s covers of “Black Hole Sun” and “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” below. After news broke of MF DOOM’s passing on Thursday, tributes came pouring in. On Saturday, Thom Yorke paid his respects via Twitter. “I am so sad to hear MF Doom’s passing,” he wrote. “He was a massive inspiration to so many of us, changed things.. for me the way he put words was often shocking in it’s genius, using stream of consciousness in a way i’d never heard before …” In the post, Yorke linked to his remix of DOOM’s “Gazillion Ear,” which was a bonus track on what would end up being the rapper’s final solo album, 2009’s Born Like This. The Radiohead frontman and his bandmate Jonny Greenwood were also featured on the 2012 DOOM and Jneiro Jarel track “Retarded Fren.” See Yorke’s tribute below. I am so sad to hear MF Doom’s passing. Remember when Smash Mouth and some other bands so terrible that Trapt made it on to the promotional materials performed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota back in August? It caused approximately 260,000 cases of COVID-19 according to one study, which means it probably affected more lives than anything any of the artists had done since appearing on the Shrek soundtrack. Not to be outdone, Florida hosted its own super-spreader event full of awful acts last night. Headlined by Vanilla Ice (no, really), the Trump campaign event saw approximately 500 guests attend a mask-optional night at the soon-to-be-former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort. In addition to the ’90s fossil, Mike Love continued his trend of pretending to represent the Beach Boys in support of Trump, des...
Bud Light Seltzer’s New Year’s Eve livestream was appropriately headlined by the human incarnation of Bud Light itself, better known as Post Malone. But if fans were expecting Posty to stick with his own tracks, they clearly hadn’t been paying attention to last year. Much like how the Crocs collaborator busted out his own take on Nirvana classics toward the beginning of quarantine, he closed the year with “Rooster” by Alice in Chains and “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. And similarly to how the Nirvana set featured Travis Barker on drums, Malone got some help from his famous friends like Slash, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer (and Will Ferrell lookalike) Chad Smith, and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney. The stream also included sets by Steve Aoki, Saweetie, Jack Harlow, and Sebastian Y...

Foo Fighters are ringing in the New Year on a bright note. The group shared “No Son of Mine,” the second single off their upcoming album, Medicine at Midnight. The song slightly veers off the path Dave Grohl outlined in early 2020 when he compared the band’s 10th studio album to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. Opening with a crunchy, hard rock riff, “No Son of Mine” is less experimental than “Shame Shame” and more akin to the straightforward rockin’ that Foos fans are accustomed to. “This is the kind of song that just resides in all of us and if it makes sense at the time, we let it out,” Grohl says of the song. “Lyrically it’s meant to poke at the hypocrisy of self righteous leaders, people that are guilty of committing the crimes they’re supposedly against…” Listen to the song below.
