Adrian Smith has praised late producer Martin Birch for his work with IRON MAIDEN, saying “he let us sound like we sounded.” The British music producer, whose nickname was Headmaster, died in August at the age of 71. He was perhaps best known for his 11-year stint with MAIDEN, serving as the producer and engineer of such classic albums as “Killers”, “The Number Of The Beast”, “Piece Of Mind” and “Somewhere In Time”. In a new interview with Rodrigo Altaf of Sonic Perspectives, Smith was asked how Birch helped shape the MAIDEN sound in the mid-1980s. Public Enemy Drops New Video for ‘Grid’ Featuring Cypress Hill and George Clinton
In keeping with the dark lyrics of Public Enemy’s single “Grid,” the group dropped an appropriately apocalyptic video featuring pals Cypress Hill and George Clinton. The clip includes footage from PE’s performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Directed by David C. Snyder, the video for “GRID” is the latest from PE’s recent album, What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? which saw the previously released “Public Enemy Number Won” video from the LP. Four Tet and Madlib Announce New Collaborative Album, Share “Road of the Lonely Ones”: Stream
Electronic music producer Four Tet and hip-hop producer Madlib are joining forces for a new collaborative album. Titled Sound Ancestors, it’s due out next month via Madlib Invazion. The upcoming effort has been in the works “for the last few years,” according to a statement posted to Four Tet’s social media on Sunday. “[Madlib] is always making loads of music in all sorts of styles and I was listening to some of his new beats and studio sessions when I had the idea that it would be great to hear some of these ideas made into a Madlib solo album,” he noted. Late Deftones Bassist Chi Cheng’s Spoken Word Album to Arrive in January
A limited-edition album featuring a 2001 spoken word performance by late Deftones bassist Chi Cheng will arrive in late January. The release, dubbed The Head Up Project, contains 24 tracks, all captured during the musician’s set at the Cafe Paris in the band’s hometown of Sacramento, California. Cheng sadly died in 2013 at the age of 42 after a 2008 car crash left him in a years-long coma. The spoken word album is being released via Qumran Records and Buckle Up For Chi, a nonprofit founded in the bassist’s honor that encourages seatbelt use. The Head Up Project is subtitled A Night of Poetry, Belly Dancing, Music, Insults, Alcohol and Other Forms of Flattery. To coincide with the release of The White Stripes’ new greatest hits album, a cache of rare B-sides is now available on digital streaming services for the first time. Additionally, video from the band’s lone appearance on Saturday Night Live has been re-uploaded to YouTube, and a new live album is streaming on Bandcamp. Carrying on with the celebration of their recently released Greatest Hits album, The White Stripes’ have made Live at The 40 Watt available for download on Bandcamp until Dec. 20 at midnight CT. The 11-track collection, on Third Man Records, was recorded September 27, 1999, at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia. All Bandcamp proceeds will go to Fair Fight Action, a voter participation advocacy group that has been working to protect the rights of eligible voters in the Georgia runoff elections.
