Saturday Night Live Has Officially Moved on from the Election to the Pandemic

Since taking several post-election weeks off, following a record-setting six live shows in a row, Saturday Night Live has been in a period of relative calm. Things seem back to normal even: They’re two shows into their usual three-show December lineup; the set was decorated for the holidays this week; and next weekend sees another alum-hosted episode — an unofficial pre-Christmas tradition. What’s more, Jim Carrey, Alec Baldwin, and Maya Rudolph have been MIA for two weeks in a row, and those labored debate sketches are a thing of the past. In a sense, SNL has felt almost like comfort food. In lieu of room-temperature political takes, the show has re-shifted its focus over the last two episodes to the ensuing pandemic. It’s an understandable pivot, seeing how December has seen some of the ...

CMAs Deny Indoor Awards Ceremony Responsible for Charley Pride’s Death

Country music legend Charley Pride died Saturday of COVID-19 complications, a month and a day after accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Country Music Association Awards. Now, the CMA has issued a statement denying that their decision to host a gigantic indoor party during a pandemic could have contributed to the icon’s death. The 2020 awards were a total shit show before they even began, with the Association warning artists to stay away from politics, and several nominees and winners bowing out after testing positive for the novel coronavirus. Now, after Pride’s death, the CMA has come under a fresh barrage of criticism. In a since-deleted tweet, superstar Maren Morris wrote that while she didn’t want to “jump to conclusions,” before the family released a statement, “if this was ...

On Sunday, she revealed that Lenny Kravitz and legendary drummer Nate Smith gifted her a custom Ludwig Legacy Mahogany drum kit (the same type of kit she played with Kravitz at London’s 02 Arena last year) and uploaded a reaction video that’s sure to put a smile on your face (much like her cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You”). In the clip, Kravitz shared a sweet message with the musical prodigy. “I can’t wait to hear the new grooves. Keep doing what you’re doing. I love watching all of your progress,” he said. “Happy holidays. Love and respect always. Peace.” Smith also sent a message, telling the young musician to have fu...

Proposed Law Could Make Streaming Copyrighted Material on Twitch Without Permission a Felony

In the latest omnibus spending bill making its way through Congress, a provision has been added that would effectively render the streaming of copyrighted music without permission a felony offense. The provision has been added to the bill by Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina. If passed, the provision would likely land streaming platforms—including Twitch—in more hot water, as the video giant has continued to butt heads with major labels and copyright representatives for much of 2020. This fall, Twitch introduced what they claimed was a fully licensed product called “Soundtrack by Twitch,” which purportedly allowed streamers to play music without fear of being issued a DMCA takedown. However, the Recording Academy and the RIAA, among other organizations, rebut...

Since its release on Lake’s very own Black Book Records banner on Friday, December 11th, house heads everywhere have been hitting their stay-at-home dancefloors. The spark for this collaboration came at a Miami pool party where the two ran into each other in a hotel lobby. They exchanged emails, and a month later, they were in the studio making the magic happen.  The duo kicks things off with the record’s titular track “The Answer” featuring Arthur Baker and Victor Simonelli. Sampling the 1991 song “Why Can’t We See” by Blind Truth, the tune’s lyrics are simple yet powerful: “Love is the answer, we’ve got to live together.” As the first single off of the EP,...
