Ol’ Blue Eyes and the Red Headed Stranger are together again. Two years after Willie Nelson released the Frank Sinatra tribute album My Way, the legendary singer is once again honoring his musical hero with 11 new covers on That’s Life. It’s out February 26th via Legacy Recordings. These classics and standards were recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, where Sinatra was famously the first artist to step up to the mic. Afterwards, the final dotting of I’s and crossing of T’s took place at Pedernales Studios in Austin, Texas. Buddy Cannon and Matt Rollings produced, and while Nelson sings solo on ten of the songs, he’s joined by Grammy-winning vocalist Diana Krall for a duet of “I Won’t Dance”. Nelson and Sinatra were close friends for many years. In the 1980s Sinatra opened for Nelson a...
The Lowdown: In a recent interview with the BBC, founding member of The Avalanches, Robbie Chater, said of We Will Always Love You, “We were thinking a lot about signal transmission and how every radio broadcast from the last hundred years is still floating out there in space … It’s a beautiful thought to me that all these broadcasts are still out there, surrounding us.” It’s easy to feel this focus in the album, an expansive cosmic compendium that finds its tracks crackling and churning into one another. The context of the album’s production — how the band was inspired by the idea that sampling old records is like summoning old spirits and by the recording of Ann Druyan’s heartbeat for the Golden Record just after Carl Sagan proposed to her — helps, but it isn’t strictly necessary. This a...
My Morning Jacket appeared on Seth Meyers on Thursday to perform their song “Climbing the Ladder”. It was the band’s third late-night performance behind The Waterfall II, and a pattern has definitely emerged. When MMJ previously appeared on Fallon and Kimmel, each member performed their part alone in front of a single backdrop and then the shots were layered on top of each other. For Meyers, the concept was much the same, though the execution was unique. Instead of overlaying the various shots, the band cut it all together in ever alternating panels, a playful yet effective editing that matched the track’s carnival atmosphere. Watch the replay of My Morning Jacket’s “Climbing the Latter” performance below. Editors’ Picks In addition to The Waterfall II, MMJ released a trio of live al...
Steve Earle has shared a new cover of the Justin Townes Earle single “Champagne Corolla”. It’s the latest preview of J.T., the tribute album he’s releasing next year in honor of his late son. “Champagne Corolla” was originally written by Justin for his 2017 album Kids in the Street. It’s a bold number that lets his wobbly electric guitar riffs snake over bass drum and explosive horns. Throughout, he sings about a mysterious girl who drives the eponymous car, a vehicle choice that he believes gives her an air of brains, charm, and logic. For his cover version, Steve Earle takes a similar approach with help from his bandmates The Dukes, who appear on the rest of the album as well. After turning down the rhythm section and turning up his vocals, Earle drags out his southern drawl, giving each...
British heavy metal legends SAXON will release a covers album, “Inspirations”, on March 19, 2021 via Silver Lining Music. The 11-track effort contains some of the superb classic rock songs that influenced Biff Byford and the rest of the band. “Inspirations” gets things rolling with the release of SAXON‘s crunching take on THE ROLLING STONES‘ “Paint It Black”. Byford comments: “Loved this band since I first saw them and heard them. I liked THE BEATLES, but THE STONES appealed to my rebel side; their iconic look… so many great songs, such a great attitude in the music!” The release of “Paint It Black” is also accompanied by a behind-the-scenes video which was filmed during the band’s recording session earlier in th...
British/American metal trio RAVEN has released the official music video for the song “Not So Easy”. The track is taken from the band’s latest album, “Metal City”, which was released in September via SPV/Steamhammer. Comments bassist/vocalist John Gallagher: “We actually shot this back in April 2019 in Los Angeles while we were doing some studio lunacy at Mike Heller‘s [drums] place… just a regular day at the office….lunatic style!” It’s often small things that can give powerful impetus to a musician’s creativity. In the case of USA-based metal trio RAVEN, it was the unanimously positive reactions to their 2015 release “ExtermiNation”, and, of course, the arrival of drummer Mike Heller (he joined the fold in...
With the pandemic and quarantine lockdowns bringing most live music and touring to a screeching halt, SOUNDGARDEN/PEARL JAM drummer Matt Cameron and FOO FIGHTERS drummer Taylor Hawkins used the downtime to explore new music and create a new project. The two multi-talented songwriter/drummers have unveiled their collaboration, NIGHTTIME BOOGIE ASSOCIATION, by releasing two songs that they wrote, recorded, and produced: “Long In The Tooth” and “The Path We’re On”. The songs will be released as a deluxe single on Friday, December 11, 2020 through their own label Keep It Trippy Records. “Long In The Tooth” was written by Taylor Hawkins (lyrics) and Matt Cameron (music) and features Cameron on guitar, bass, and drum machine and Hawkins on lead vocal, dr...
Alice Cooper will release his brand new studio album, “Detroit Stories”, on February 26, 2021 via earMUSIC. The official lyric video for the disc’s second single, “Our Love Will Change The World”, can be seen below. According to a press release, the song “comes with innocent and hopeful melodies and joyous up-beat tempo and an overall happy atmosphere.” But is that really what the lyrics are telling us about? Alice explains: “I think ‘Our Love Will Change The World’ is one of the oddest songs I’ve ever done, and it was one that came to us by somebody else, another Detroit writer. And it was so strange, because it was happy and what it was saying was anything but happy — it was simply a great juxtaposition. And I got it immed...
1. Doja Cat’s “Santa Baby” The singer kicked off the show with a sultry rendition of “Santa Baby,” dressed in a fluffy pink robe, as she sauntered down the stairs of a matching pink bedroom as she mused the lyrics and batted her eyes. The holiday hit was a perfect fit for Doja’s characteristically alluring vocals. She also revealed her favorite festive treat, naming a breakfast staple. “Waffles are better than pancakes and I think most people know that,” she claimed. “It’s not an opinion. It’s a fact.” 2. Shawn Mendes’ “cozy” “Dream” performance Among performances of his Wonder title track and a euphoric cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,”...
BTS, BoA, NCT, Seventeen and Twice are just a few among many K-pop stars who performed this year and pushed the show’s immersive production to its fullest. BTS in particular made use of AR and spectacular 3D effects throughout the group’s set, even bringing in SUGA, a band member who’s currently recovering from surgery on a shoulder injury, to perform with them as a hologram in “Life Goes On.” The effect was made possible by a volumetric display, which records an object or place in 360-degrees and builds an interactive 3D avatar that can be viewed from any direction without special glasses or headsets. And BTS weren’t the only ones pushing the limits of tech: Treasure combined a robot arm with a laser system, presented a new kind of performance, and Twice performed on a virtual XR studio s...
That was wayyyy more than Santa expected, so he nervously plowed ahead with his milk and cookies rhyme about how happy he is at the North Pole and how much he loves his gift-giving uniform. “F–k your black boots, man/ I got Jimmy Choos/ And I got a Lamborghini/ Just kiddin’, I got two,” Santa Nas shot back, noting that instead of giving presents he makes kids pay him. Well, that was more than Santa could take, so he politely asked if they could end the song, which only got Santa Nas more turned up, as he leaned into the “Old Town Road”-esque breakdown. “Let’s get naughty, turn up the track/ Grab my sack while I count these stacks,” Nas rapped. “Don’t need reindeer, that’s a fact/ Got my hoes out front and some presents...
15. Coney Island feat. The National After borrowing Aaron Dessner from The National for Folklore, Swift corrals the full band for “Coney Island,” a duet with singer Matt Berninger in which the two musical approaches meet in the middle. Whereas “Exile,” the Folklore duet with Bon Iver, was founded upon escalated drama, “Coney Island” rests on the gentle recollections of a pair that has shared a world, with Berninger’s soothing rumble returning every volley from Swift. 14. Dorothea As she did on Folklore songs like “The Last Great American Dynasty” and “Betty,” Swift creates emotional stakes on “Dorothea” by zooming in on passed-down narratives and singing from a new perspectives. The backstories of the characters in “Dorothea” are less crucial than the drama that Swift constructs: a separat...
