IRON MAIDEN has uploaded a video of guitarist Adrian Smith playing the song “Gangland” for the first time in many years. The track is taken from MAIDEN‘s 1982 album “The Number Of The Beast”, which was the band’s first LP to feature vocalist Bruce Dickinson and the songwriting contributions of Smith, who had joined the group two years earlier. In the clip, Smith introduces his “Gangland” playthrough by saying: “Back in the early with MAIDEN, there was a song called ‘Gangland’, which is on ‘The Number Of The Beast’ album. We were rehearsing at a place called Hollywood Studios near where I grew up, actually — for ‘The Number Of The Beast’ album, we were writing songs there. Clive and I got to rehearsal ...
John Dolmayan says that he never wanted SYSTEM OF A DOWN to stop making new music and touring. The Serj Tankian-fronted outfit has toured intermittently since ending its hiatus in 2011, but has yet to record a full-length follow-up to its “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize” LPs, which came out in 2005. Dolmayan, who also owns a high-end comic shop called Torpedo Comics in Las Vegas, discussed SYSTEM‘s inability to make a new album during an interview with Richard Allan, host of “Action Figures” on Amazon Prime. “I never wanted SYSTEM to take a hiatus,” he said (see video below). “I think it was a disastrous move for us, because we never reached our peak. I still feel like we have a lot of music in us. And as big as the band is — we’...
DEEP PURPLE bassist Roger Glover has confirmed that he is still planning on releasing his autobiography. “I’ve been toying with writing a book for several years, but not really doing much about it,” he said in a new fan interview which was posted on the YouTube channel of the band’s record company, earMUSIC (see video below). “But since this pandemic situation and being stuck at home, I’ve actually started with a great deal of energy and I’ve made great progress. The only problem is, as much progress as I make, I realize how much there is yet to come that’s very important. I’ve got to about the point now where I’m joining PURPLE. And a lot of that was easy, because I kept diaries in the ’60s. So a lot of notes and gig lists ...
The Lowdown: Rico Nasty has always been a powerhouse, existing on the edge of Soundcloud rap in the mid-2010s while still finishing high school. Her infectious, aggressive-yet-bubbly style made waves on the Internet early on, attracting the attention of Lil Yachty in 2016 to remix her song “Hey Arnold” and being featured in the hit HBO series insecure in 2017. Combining her eclectic fashion sense with spitfire raps that effortlessly bounce between sex and violence makes her one of the biggest pieces in the growing mosaic of this new era of female rappers. Her long-awaited debut album, Nightmare Vacation, takes a fine-tooth comb through the style that has made her one of the most influential rappers of the past few years. With seven mixtapes under her belt, Rico sounds like a seasoned veter...

We’re not worthy: The latest episode of Josh Gad’s quarantine charity series Reunited Apart brought together the cast of Wayne’s World alongside legendary rockers Alice Cooper, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Schwing! The 1992 film was based on a popular SNL sketch, which itself had roots in the “Wayne’s Power Hour” segments on the 1987 Canadian series It’s Only Rock & Roll. Like other editions of Reunited Apart, this one began with a tortured comedy bit where Gad pretended that the whole thing hadn’t been meticulously planned. Here, he dials up Joe Perry and Steven Tyler, but only to ask for the phone numbers of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, who played Wayne and Garth. “You brought us — two wo...
Last week, Warner Bros. announced plans to simultaneously release all 17 of their 2021 titles (The Matrix 4, Dune, The Suicide Squad etc.) directly to HBO Max and to theaters. The news sent shockwaves throughout the film industry due to the drastic consequences it will have not just on the existence of movie theaters, but on the entire Hollywood apparatus. Naturally, Christopher Nolan had some opinions on the matter. On Monday, the Tenet writer-director told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros.’ decision to unload their entire release schedule onto the new streaming service — which is owned by their parent company WarnerMedia and had a middling launch earlier this year— will be disastrous. “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important ...

This story was co-written with Amanda Montgomery and Laura Veras. In today’s marketplace, there is no doubt that one of the toughest avenues to establish a viable career is as a songwriter. The 9.1c mechanical royalty—which has not been adjusted for inflation since 2006—has become less significant due to the emergence of streaming and the plunge of physical sales and downloads. Now, the impact of COVID-19 has contrived new challenges for songwriters and their publishers to tackle as alternative revenue streams, such as touring, continue to erode in the virus’ wake. To give a general idea of how COVID-19 has trickled down to the publishing community, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) projected that global music publishing collections will fa...
