10 of Armando Manzanero’s Timeless Songs

Here are 10 favorites: “Somos Novios”Manzanero wrote the sweetly innocent “Somos Novios” (We’re boyfriend and girlfriend, because we both feel mutual, profound love) in 1968. The purity of the lyrics connected at a global scale. While the English adaptation of the song — “It’s Impossible” by Sid Wayne — changed the lyrics (It’s impossible, tell the sun to leave the sky, it’s just impossible), the notion of enduring love remained. When Perry Como recorded “It’s Impossible,” it became his first song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in more than 12 years. “It’s Impossible” was also recorded by Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, Shriley Bassey and Andre Bocelli, among many others. In Spanish, “Somos Novios” remains one of the most covered Spanish language songs o...

blackbear Thrived This Year — and Probably Will Next Year

If you’re part of blackbear’s friends and family, you got a Balenciaga sweater for Christmas. “I’m like the Aunt Karen of the family,” bear — real name Matthew Musto — tells SPIN. “I get anxious because I’m like, ‘Who did I get a gift for? Who did I forget? Is so-and-so gonna fit in the sweater I got them?’” It’s a good holiday for the people in blackbear’s life. And it’s been a good year for him too, despite the obvious madness. “It’s my son’s first year on the planet,” he says. “[Midnight] has eight or nine teeth already, and they just keep growing,” he adds, laughing. “There’s never been a dull moment.” Lately, dull moments have been rare for the 30-year-old singer, songwriter and producer. With “hot girl bummer,” the lead single of his fifth studio album, everything means nothing, he h...

Christmas means that it’s time for comedy theater Second City’s fundraiser for families in need. Hosted online this year, the 24-hour event featured a solo set by Robert Smith of The Cure. The goth rocker performed songs from Faith to celebrate its forthcoming 40th anniversary. In black and white, Smith shared renditions of “The Holy Hour,” “The Funeral Party” and ended with “The Drowning Man.” The somber nature of these tracks truly represented the quarantine-Christmas experience.  Other performers for the fundraiser included Kim Gordon, Glen Hansard, Sleaford Mods, Jim O’Rourke, Bill Callahan, and Jeff Tweedy. Smith has been busy, most recently remixing “Teenager” by the Deftones for their Black Stallion LP. “It’s amazing to hear Robert rework one of our songs an...

For the past 18 years, the legendary comedy theater Second City has hosted a day-long fundraiser to fulfill Christmas wishlists for families in need. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s “Letters to Santa” event 24 Hour Improv was hosted online, and viewers were treated to extra special solo set by The Cure’s own Robert Smith. Smith’s performance was comprised entirely of songs from The Cure’s 1981 album Faith to celebrate the record’s upcoming 40th anniversary. He opened with a stripped-down version of “The Holy Hour” on electric guitar over a backing track, switched to synths for “The Funeral Party”, and then finished with “The Drowning Man” on a reverb-soaked guitar. As if to stay on brand, the entire set was filmed in black and white at his home studio. Other performers at...

LIPS On ANVIL’s Longevity: ‘You Don’t Do This Because You Wanna Make Millions Of Dollars’

In a new interview with RocklandSound, Steve “Lips” Kudlow of Canadian metal legends ANVIL spoke about the persistence, tenacity, endurance and commitment that has kept him and drummer Robb Reiner going for more than 40 years despite falling short of the commercial success achieved by some of the bands they influenced. The guitarist/vocalist said (see video below): “I just had a conversation with Jon Z, [founder of] CraZed Management, the guy that basically discovered METALLICA. We’ve been friends for 40 years, maybe more, and we were just talking about all this last night. It’s doing this all for the right reasons. Paul Stanley Pledges to ‘KISS 2020 Goodbye’ With Explosive Sendoff

If music does indeed possess the healing powers so often ascribed to it, who better than four “masked” musical super-heroes to kick the dumpster fire that is 2020 to the curb? Slayer might be louder and meaner, U2 more spiritual, but for a feel-good rock ‘n’ roll all nite and party every day ethos that can help put the last 10 months in the rear-view, it’s KISS for the win. KISS guitarist/singer Paul Stanley promises that “if there’s a way we can kick 2020 in the ass with an eight-inch-heel to say goodbye to it, let’s do it!” Stanley is speaking from pre-Christmas band rehearsals in Los Angeles, conducted under “very strict COVID regulations.” The quartet is readying for a New Year’s Eve show that’s extravagant even by KISS standards. The global livestream concert is taking place at The Ro...
