Oasis Classic “Wonderwall” Becomes First ’90s Song to Hit One Billion Streams

Today is gonna be the day that… Oasis enter the history books. The British rock group’s anthemic “Wonderwall” has just become the first ’90s song to hit one billion streams on Spotify. The momentous milestone comes as the single, as well as the classic album on which it appears, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, celebrates its 25th anniversary. “Wonderwall” was originally released on October 30th, 1995 as the third single from (What’s the Story). Written by Noel Gallagher, it’s said to describe “an imaginary friend who’s gonna come and save you from yourself.” The song has gone on to become one of — if not the — most popular in the entire Oasis catalog, and has even spawned its own meme. Its corresponding music video is also Oasis’ most viewed. At the 1997 Grammys, “Wonderwall” earned the...

CELTIC FROST’s TOM GABRIEL WARRIOR Pens Foreword To New Book ‘USBM: A Revolution Of Identity In American Black Metal’

Decibel Books has announced the publication of “USBM: A Revolution Of Identity In American Black Metal”. In parallel with the blazing European scene of the 1990s, the American wasteland birthed its own wayward souls who found their own uses for blast beats, tremolo picking, ghoulish shrieks and satanic leanings. Over the span of 30 years, Americans have clung to black metal’s core tenets and cast them off in equal measure, always in search of a sound that could give voice to our uniquely predatory demons. Over three years in the making, this new 544-page hardcover book chronicles the stateside movement via first-hand accounts from genre progenitors VON, PROFANATICA and ABSU through revolutionary acts like LEVIATHAN, WEAKLING and XASTHUR to present-day progressives PANOPTI...

Phil Collins Hits Trump with Cease and Desist Order After Playing “In the Air Tonight”

Phil Collins has hit Donald Trump’s presidential campaign with a cease and desist order following the unauthorized use of “In the Air Tonight” during a rally in Iowa on Wednesday night. Collins’ 1981 solo single was played aloud prior to Trump taking the stage in Des Moines, Iowa. The campaign has a tendency of using songs without listening to their lyrics — the most recent example being CCR’s “Fortunate Son” — but playing a song titled “In the Air Tonight” as an airborne virus continues to ravage the country seems particular tone-deaf. Then again, it could’ve also been the campaign’s way of flipping a middle finger at health officials and media members who question why Trump is holding mass gatherings where many of the attendees are not wearing masks. Whatever the case, Trump’s campaign d...

Mac DeMarco Joins Benny Sings on New Song “Rolled Up”: Stream

For Record Store Day, Mac DeMarco released not one, but two new demo albums for 2019’s Here Comes the Cowboy. The jizz jazzer has returned now with a feature on “Rolled Up”, the latest single from Dutch pop artist Benny Sings. DeMarco’s lo-fi and lax aesthetic is well represented here, as is Benny Sings’ throwback groove, which sounds like a cross between the Bee Gees and The Stylistics. For all the chillness between them, though, “Rolled Up” is full of heavy existential reflection: “Rolled up, tossed out/ Trying to understand why my life turned south/ Oh I’m holed up, locked out, shut in, held down,” the opening verse reads. In a statement, Benny Sings talked about the track’s meaning and how it came together back during pre-coronavirus times: “The song is about being in the dumps without...

The Knife Unveil Anti-Nationalist Anthem: Stream

In 2014, Swedish electronic duo The Knife wrote the theme song to the anti-nationalist cabaret Europa Europa, which toured the world for the next two years. “För alla namn vi inte får använda” was previously only available in Sweden and on YouTube. But as far right political groups have continued to gain power, The Knife have decided to give the track an official release. “För alla namn vi inte får använda” roughly translates to “For all the names we cannot use.” Via Google Translate and r/Svenska, the lyrics are from the perspective of “illegal immigrants,” though as the song points out, “We can never be illegal.” In a statement, The Knife’s Karin and Olof Dreijer explained why they wrote the song and how it’s meaning has changed over time. They said, “In 2014 we made music for an anti-na...

Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill Musical Leads Tony Awards with 15 Nominations

For obvious reasons, it’s been a weird and shortened Broadway season. Still, the 74th annual Tony Awards are soldiering on, celebrating the work of those productions that were able to put on shows before the March shutdown of New York’s theater district. That includes Jagged Little Pill, the musical based on Alanis Morissette’s iconic album of the same name, which leads the 2020 Tonys with 15 nominations. To be fair, there was a considerably smaller field this year than is typical. Because the pandemic forced Broadway’s shutdown, the cutoff date for Tony-eligible productions was bumped to February 19th, 2020. (Jagged Little Pill officially opened on Broadway in December of last year.) That meant that only 18 plays were eligible for nominations, down from 34 in 2019. There is also one fewer...

Megan Thee Stallion Continues Teasing Fans About New Music: ‘My Album About to Go Crazy’

Earlier this year, the “Savage” rapper teased her upcoming album during an at-home appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, noting that she used her time during quarantine in Los Angeles to record new material. “I’ve been recording. That’s the best thing about quarantine,” Meg told Fallon. “I would have been working on it anyway, but what else am I going to be doing right now. I’ve just been writing and we set up a little studio in here. So, we’re going to have new music for when we can go back outside.” The hip-hop star’s forthcoming musical project will follow her debut album, Suga, which arrived in March. The release came after Meg was granted a temporary restraining order against 1501 Certified Entertainment, claiming her label was instructing her distrib...

Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez Join Joe Biden, Encourage Latino Community to Vote

Lopez added, “For me, it’s [about] unifying the nation again, you know, getting rid of this hate. Thinking about my kids walking around in a world where it’s OK to be racist or prejudiced because our administration says it’s OK — that, to me, is really sad because it’s not the country that I believe that I grew up in.” In the video segment, which also featured Biden’s wife, Jill, they spoke about the need to contain the COVID-19 outbreak, which has disproportionately affected the Latino population, and the power that Latino voices have. “My kind of hope and quest for the Latino community is that they start understanding their power,” J. Lo said. “Their vote counts.” Watch the clip below. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are lookin...

“Positions” seems to have a release date. Ariana Grande has unveiled an official countdown that is likely leading to new music. STYX’s TOMMY SHAW Doesn’t Want To ‘Just Hand’ New Album To SPOTIFY Without Being Able To Tour Behind It

During an October 14 appearance on SiriusXM‘s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk”, STYX guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw spoke about the progress of the writing and recording sessions for the follow-up to “The Mission”. Released in June 2017, that disc marked STYX‘s first new LP in 14 years. It was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, co-produced and co-written with Will Evankovich, a longtime collaborator of Shaw‘s in the SHAW/BLADES band and who also plays with THE GUESS WHO. Shaw said: “The mixes are done. Unfortunately, we’re gonna have to wait [to release the LP] until we can go out and perform and help to promote the album. ‘Cause otherwise, we’re just handing it to Spotify. We put a lot of time, energy and resources i...
