Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction Celebrities have been sharing their skills with the world as the coronavirus pandemic forces millions to quarantine. From Dolly Parton offering weekly bedtime stories for children to the Obamas hosting a star-studded virtual graduation ceremony, we thought we’d seen it all. Leave it to Samuel L. Jackson to shake things up with arguably the most on-brand contribution of all: swearing lessons. On Monday, Jackson promised that he would teach fans how to swear in 15 different languages if at least 2,500 people go to his HeadCount site and register to vote (or double check their registrations are set up). Consider him the ultimate godfather of cursing: he held the title for most swear words in film (a whopping 301!) until just recently. “Listen up – If 2500 of ...
The Pitch: The elevator pitch for Antebellum was probably quite simple: Veronica Henley is an enslaved woman on a cruel plantation and must stay silent until she can find the perfect moment to escape. But there’s a twist: It’s a story about the Antebellum South, updated for modern audiences and designed to speak to the present moment. While this sounds great on paper, all of these elements culminate into a forced, muddled mess that’s less than the sum of its parts. It’s not that Antebellum is bad — there are many things it does well — it’s just trying so hard to be the perfect movie for this moment in time. Because of this, the film winds up losing control of its message. The Past Is Present: Antebellum is trying to make a commentary on white obsession with Southern “heritage.” It’s trying...

“We are in the middle of a revolution right? What’s a revolution without a song and a song without a revolution.” That’s the question the Grammy-winning artist Janelle Monáe posed to Entertainment Weekly when describing her latest single, “Turntables.” The song was released on and flips between cleverly rapped lines about “liberation, elevation, education” and a harmonic refrain with clear gospel influences. It’s Monáe’s take on a contemporary protest song, a call for a political sea change, in the vein of, say, Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” or Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power.” Courtesy of Atlantic Records And on Tuesday (September), Monáe released a moving music video — or, as ...

EDC’s empathic return to Europe represe...
Let’s be honest—no matter how much undying love you and your rave bae have for each other, you fight sometimes despite being closer than peanut butter and jelly. GLD‘s latest release, “Mad, Cause I’m Right,” isn’t for the couples that work things out, though. It’s for those that are no longer lovebirds. The track, which arrived by way of Flux Pavilion‘s Circus Records, has all the makings of a sad boy anthem with heartbreak-themed lyrics, aching future bass chord progressions, and an infectious hook. Mattie, one-half of GLD, vocalizes the all-too familiar-feeling of arguing in circles with your significant other and the heartbreak that ensues. The track’s vocals have a unique feel akin to a Juice WRLD ballad, tugging at t...
Renowned country artist Cam has opened up about her experiences collaborating with Avicii, who co-wrote the titular track from her forthcoming album The Otherside. “I got to co-write with Avicii before he passed away on this incredible song that I’m obsessed with,” Cam told Katie Neal of RADIO.com live from the 2020 ACM Awards. Cam was working on the track with the late dance music icon prior to his tragic 2018 death, and his loss greatly affected her creative process. However, she was so enamored with what the two had worked on that she decided to posthumously release the song on her highly anticipated sophomore LP to honor Avicii’s legacy. Avicii’s work ethic, Cam says, had a profound impact on her. “I felt I had to get this right for his...

Initially released on September 20, 1980 in...
RATING: 8/10 There’s always been something uniquely exciting about collisions between thrash metal and brutal hardcore. Recent records by the likes of RINGWORM and INTEGRITY have proved that point tenfold, but while PLAGUE YEARS are considerably more traditional in thrash terms than either of those bands, there is a similarly destructive and anarchic vibe here. Vocalist Tim Englehardt occasionally sounds a lot like INTEGRITY‘s Dwid Hellion, too, but “Circle of Darkness” takes its most essential cues from the ultra-dark fringes of the thrash firmament, from the obvious benchmarks of SLAYER, KREATOR and DARK ANGEL, through to more recent purveyors of filthy speed worship like POWER TRIP and ENFORCED. Superficial scene resemblances aside, this is an incredibly potent a...
New York City hardcore legends SICK OF IT ALL have released a live session of “Alone”, the first video of the band’s quarantine sessions. SICK OF IT ALL said in a statement: “Quarantine gave us a reason (and an excuse) to dust off some of our favorite songs that haven’t been featured in our live set either in a while, or ever. We wanted to rekindle their fire, and share them with our fans worldwide. So for the next months, we’re going to release one song every fortnight to try to keep the torch of hardcore lit through this drought of live music that’s driving us all crazy! Please stay tuned for details and release dates.” SICK OF IT ALL‘s twelfth studio album, “Wake The Sleeping Dragon!”, was released in November 2018 via Ce...
Swedish metallers SABATON, whose lyrical themes are based on war, historical battles and acts of heroism, have commemorated the 104th anniversary of the World War I Battle Of Flers–Courcelette, fought from September 15, 1916 to September 22, 1916, by releasing a very unique video for the song “The Future Of Warfare”, created using… building blocks. Check it out below. “The Future Of Warfare” is taken from SABATON‘s ninth full-length album, “The Great War”, which came out in July 2019 via Nuclear Blast Records. The band’s 20th-anniversary record was a concept effort covering stories from the First World War. SABATON started recording “The Great War” exactly 100 years after the end of the First World War (November 11, 1918) and took...
