In remembrance of the lo-fi legend, a livestream tribute event headlined by Phoebe Bridgers, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, and Beck will be broadcast tonight. Titled “Honey I Sure Miss You”, after Johnston’s own 1991 song of the same name, the online music memorial will also feature performances from Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Devendra Banhart, and Maya Hawke, as well as The Lemon Twigs, Lucius, and Jesse Harris. Additionally, Johnston’s family is expected to show a previously unreleased home movie of the late songwriter. The tribute will stream on the website of New York’s famed Electric Lady Studios, as well as...
Yesterday, September 10th, Donald “Bone Spurs” Trump held a campaign rally in Freeland, Michigan. He de-planed to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s anti-war classic “Fortunate Son”, and if you’ve ever paid the tiniest bit of attention to the lyrics, you’ll agree with singer John Fogerty that it’s a “confounding” choice. The moment was recorded in a tweet by Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel, who called it “an entry for the “nobody listened to the lyrics” hall of fame.” The tweet quickly went viral, and today Fogerty issued his response. In a Facebook video called “Meaning behind Fortunate Son,” the legendary rocker broke things down so even a very stable genius could understand. “Recently, the President has been using my song ‘Fortunate Son for his campaign rallies,” the former C...
It can be tempting, as a writer, to compartmentalize, to define by a set of fixed words or parameters. Pinpoint the detail about your subject that most interests you — an unexpected gesture, a prime soundbite pulled from an interview — and flesh it out into a full story. But in the case of the New York-based artist Michael Love Michael, who last month self-released their debut album XO, it’s simply not possible, in part because they do so much. As the former culture editor at Paper magazine, the 32-year-old “Cancer-Leo cusp,” who grew up between Chicago and Gary, Indiana, crafted celebrated profiles of such disparate musicians as Paramore’s Hayley Williams and cyborg sensation Poppy, while also serving up weekly playlists packed with the best bops from Megan Thee Stallion, Yves Tumor,...
Three singles from KILLSWITCH ENGAGE have reached new sales milestones in the U.S. “My Curse” has been certified platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) on September 10 for accumulating a million certified units. That same day, “The End Of Heartache” and KILLSWITCH‘s cover of the DIO classic “Holy Diver” were both certified gold for accumulating half a million units. According to the RIAA, one equivalent song unit is equal to a single digital song sale, or 150 on-demand audio and/or video streams. As previously reported, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its debut album this year. The first self-titled LP, which originally arrived on July 4, 2000, will be released on vinyl for the first time on Octobe...
In a new interview with Jason Rockman of Canada’s iHeart Radio, Ace Frehley spoke about “Origins Vol. 2”, the sequel to Ace‘s 2016 collection of cover songs that inspired the former KISS guitarist. The new LP will be released on September 18 via eOne. “These albums are becoming fun,” he said (see video below). “I just re-signed with eOne, and they want an ‘Origins Vol. 3’ after the next studio record, which I’ve already started writing songs for. But it’s become a really fun process. It’s much easier than doing a studio record where you have to write the material yourself. I’m basically just taking other people’s material that influenced me as a kid and putting my stamp on it.” Frehley also talked abo...
On Wednesday (September 9), MEGADETH‘s Dave Mustaine participated in his first, highly successful online live signing and discussion with Premiere Collectibles to promote his new book, “Rust In Peace: The Inside Story Of The Megadeth Masterpiece”. Released on September 8 via Hachette Books, it details the making of MEGADETH‘s iconic record “Rust In Peace”. Asked for an update on his health, 16 months after he was diagnosed with throat cancer, Mustaine said (see video below): “I have a good bill of health. And you know me — when I do things, I have to do it all the way. So in the process of doing all of the testing, they found a bunch of other little spots where it showed up on my skin. So they took care of all of that. And I’m in the studio w...
QUIET RIOT guitarist Alex Grossi has thanked fans for their support following the announcement that the band was planning to carry on after drummer Frankie Banali‘s death. The group, which now features drummer Johnny Kelly (DANZIG, TYPE O NEGATIVE), will play a couple of shows in October as well as and a string of dates in 2021. Earlier today, Grossi wrote on social media: “So great to see the outpouring of support from all over the world with regard to QUIET RIOT‘s anouncement to continue. “Since meeting Kevin DuBrow, Frankie Banali and Chuck Wright when I joined the band in 2004, I have experienced both the amazingly great and the horribly tragic. No matter what, we always forged ahead. “While I am still devastated from the loss of one of the most important ...
In what should come as no surprise to anyone, John Fogerty has denounced the Trump campaign for playing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” ahead of a rally in Michigan on Thursday. Fogerty posted on a video on Facebook where he said he found Trump’s use of the song to be “confounding to say the least” and went on to explain the song’s 1969 origins from the Vietnam War. “By the time I wrote the song, I had already been drafted and served in the military,” he said. “I’ve been a lifelong supporter of our guys and gals in the military.” He went on to talk about the draft, which was around back then, and said how it upset him how “people of privilege — rich people” could avoid the draft could use that to avoid having to serve in the military. “I found that very upsetting that such a...
