After a few years of side projects and collaborations, Aesop Rock is ready to bounce back with his first solo album in nearly five years. The underground hip-hop producer and emcee announced Wednesday that his upcoming concept record, Spirit World Field Guide, will drop on Nov. 13 via Rhymesayers Entertainment. The 21-track album follows Aesop through a parallel universe featuring “survival tips,” warnings, imagery of killer eels and more. “If you are among the countless individuals who find themselves feeling both dead and alive at the same time, the information contained within may serve as an invaluable asset to your journey,” Aesop said in a statement. “Godspeed and good luck.” Along with the album announcement, Aesop just dropped his first single and cinematic video off the project, “...

Valentino Khan’s first original single this year came in the form of “Obsession” back in April, a futuristic house gem alongside rising duo Ship Wrek. An undisputed tastemaker, the “Deep Down Low” creator is known for bringing together varied influences and sounds to create his unique brand of bass music. Now following up on “Obsession,” Valentino Khan has returned with “Blackmail,” taken off his forthcoming EP on Diplo’s Mad Decent imprint. A menacing instrumental single with an industrial flair, “Blackmail” sees Valentino Khan return to his roots, pulling inspiration from his formative years of listening to French electro. A gritty bassline is layered over hard-hitting, four-on-the-floor drums to form the bulk of the tune, a combination that makes up for an aggressive drop, perfectly con...
At the start of lockdown in March, singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer was staying in New Zealand after the conclusion of her world tour. Grammy winner Rhiannon Giddens, on the other hand, was locked down in Ireland after her own tour ended. The duo was craving collaboration, so Palmer hit up producer Jherek Bischof, who got together some string players in Los Angeles to assist. Together, the musicians just released a dreamy cover of Portishead’s 1994 track “It’s A Fire,” which Palmer had on repeat over in New Zealand during her stay. “There is something about this song that speaks to a deeper connection between things happening right now,” Palmer says of the Bandcamp track. “Black Lives Mattering, COVID, fear and trust are all colliding with one another…I wanted this cover vers...
Dave Mustaine says that he really wanted Nick Menza and Marty Friedman to return to MEGADETH more than five and a half years ago. The opportunity for MEGADETH‘s most celebrated lineup to regroup arose following the departures of guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover in 2014. Menza was approached by Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson to replace Drover at the end of that year, and he started working out new tracks with the band. But the plan collapsed after he was offered a contract he described as “very unfair.” A year and a half later, in May 2016, Nick died after suffering a heart attack during a concert with OHM: at The Baked Potato in Studio City, California. Mustaine spoke about Menza while promoting his new book, “Rust In Peace: The Inside Story O...
In a new interview with the “Three Sides Of The Coin” podcast, former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley was asked if there is any chance of him revisiting and recording updated versions of his previously unreleased demo songs like “The Girl Can’t Dance”, “Audio Video” and “Backstage Pass”. He responded (hear audio below): “I don’t see ‘The Girl Can’t Dance’ ever being revisited. I didn’t write that; that was given to me by one of my early managers. ‘Audio Video’ has a chance of possibly being revisited. Sean Delaney turned me on to that song, and I thought it was a little reminiscent of ‘Deuce’, to an extent. A very powerful song. “There are several demos that I’ve heard o...
Vater has released a new signature drumstick from SLIPKNOT‘s Jay Weinberg: the #Vater908! Grab your own pair today at www.vater.com. Says Jay: “Vater Drumsticks and I have developed a brand new stick that feels like a sharpened hybrid of the classic models I’ve been using since I was 14. The 908 feels familiar in the ways that drummers who play intense and heavy music need — but has extra consideration for the quickness and response we want from our drums and cymbals. “The 908 is between a 5A and 5B for a comfortable grip. It adds ¼” length for added reach, and has a quick taper for a slight forward throw — but with a fast response. Its medium-sized barrel tip delivers a defined ride cymbal tone, without lacking volume, while putting out full drum tones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀...
Back in late March, it was announced that all of WHITESNAKE‘s previously announced touring activities, including this summer’s U.S. trek with SAMMY HAGAR & THE CIRCLE and NIGHT RANGER, were being canceled so that frontman David Coverdale could undergo surgery for bilateral inguinal hernia. Fake It Flowers is the forthcoming debut album from rising indie rocker beabadoobee, due out next month via Dirty Hit. One of the most anticipated of 2020, it’s been teased thus far with the brooding “Sorry” and Song of the Week “Care”. As a third preview, she’s now sharing a track titled “Worth It”. Additionally, beabadoobee has announced 2021 tour dates in the UK. On this new crunchy, grunge-inspired offering, the Filipino-British artist attempts to shake off the ghosts of a past relationship that have been distracting her from fully living in the present. The single reminds us of both the importance of letting our old traumas heal and the value in the here and now. In a statement, the musician also known as Bea Kristi says the track is “simply about teenage infidelity and the mistakes o...
Indie pop songwriter Anna McClellan has announced a new album titled I saw first light, set to arrive November 20th. To accompanying today’s news, the Omaha musician has shared two new singles, “Desperate” and “Pace of the Universe”. The record is McClellan’s third full-length to date and second for Father/Daughter Records following her 2018 album Yes and No. Early on in her career, the Nebraska-born singer-songwriter was cosigned by Frankie Cosmos, which gave her profile a boost and placed her in a league of comparable contemporaries. Like Cosmos and others such as Florist and Dear Nora, McClellan makes soft, relatively lo-fi twee pop with intimate subject matter and clever lyrics. Unlike those other acts, though, McClellan’s songs have a woozy and whimsical swing to them that’s distinctl...
Listen via Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Play | Radio Public | Stitcher This Must Be the Gig is joined by Fergal Lawler and Noel Hogan of The Cranberries. Formed in Limerick, Ireland in 1989, the two were joined by Hogan’s brother Mike on bass and later vocalist Dolores O’Riordan. Over the course of eight albums and 20 years, the group wrote some of the most memorable sing-along anthems of the ’90s, from “Linger” to “Dreams” to “Zombie” to “Salvation”, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Tragically, the group’s most recent record, 2019’s In the End, turned out to be their last as O’Riordan sadly passed away prior to its completion. But now, Fergal and the Hogan brothers are honoring their late friend and continuing the strength of their l...
