DOWN celebrated the 25th anniversary of its classic debut album, “NOLA”, with a special livestreamed event on Saturday, August 29. Fittingly dubbed “The Quarter Century Throwdown”, the high-production, multi-camera event took place using cutting-edge streaming technology to create a one-of-a-kind virtual concert experience. The show will be rebroadcast August 30 at 6:00 p.m. EST until September 1 at 6:00 p.m. EST. Plans for select shows featuring vocalist Philip Anselmo, guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein, drummer Jimmy Bower and bassist Pat Bruders performing the record in its entirety were sidelined due to the global pandemic. In its wake, the band took part in the livestream. Your virtual ticket livestream tickets and packages are available at this locat...
KISS frontman Gene Simmons has praised Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and his biotech startup Neuralink, saying it “will help millions of people.” On Friday (August 28), Musk unveiled a pig called Gertrude with a coin-sized computer chip in her brain to demonstrate his ambitious plans to create a working brain-to-machine interface. “It’s kind of like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires,” the billionaire entrepreneur said on a webcast. Neuralink has already applied for human trials, with hopes of launching those experimental runs by the end of this year — if it’s approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If successful, a brain implant like this could revolutionize medicine, Musk said, such as treating brain injuries, depression, addiction and ...
Megan Thee Stallion took a powerful moment during her first virtual concert on Saturday (Aug. 29) to honor Black victims of police brutality. Wearing a sparkly jeweled lingerie-style outfit and backed by a several dancers, the hour-long paid livestream featured a twerk-filled set of Billboard Hot 100 hits such as “WAP,” “Savage” and “Hot Girl Summer.” Early on in the high energy performance, which had the production of an arena show minus the audience, Meg slowed things down to remember the lives of Black men, women and children who’ve been killed or injured at the hands of police. As the stage lights went down, names including Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor appeared on a large screen with a sh...
Bad Bunny may have been named songwriter of the year at the 2020 ASCAP Latin Music Awards in July, but that hasn’t stopped people on social media from questioning his victory due to his sometimes explicit lyrics. But the artist has a response to his critics, and it comes in the form of new music. In a surprise track released Sunday (Aug. 30), Bunny sends a message to his haters, expressing that there are more important issues going on in the world. “They fight because they gave me composer of the year but not for what matters,” he belts in the song. Called “Compositor del Año” (and with a Soundcloud link that ends in “f–k2020”), the Puerto Rican artist opens up about the ongoing social issues such as racism, immigration, the importance of voting and much more. Sampling Little R...
It is on! Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has finally accepted a challenge by Nandi Bushell. The 10-year-old British girl issued the drum battle in an Aug. 17 YouTube video during which she covered the band’s hit “Everlong.” The 51-year-old rocker responded in a tweet from the band’s official account on Saturday (Aug. 29). “Challenge accepted,” he wrote, tagging the young musician. “Haven’t played these songs in a loooooong time…..thanks for the inspiration!!!” “Your move,” he added before noting that he’s playing on his daughter Harper’s drum set in the accompanying video. In the 5-minute clip, Grohl shares that he’s seen all of Bushell’s videos. “You’re an incredible drummer, and ...
Katy Perry continues to treat fans with new music videos for songs on her latest album, Smile. In the days leading up to — and following — the Friday (Aug. 28) release of Smile, the 35-year-old pop star has dropped daily installments as part of her “Smile Video Series” on YouTube. So far, she’s shared visuals for songs “Never Really Over,” “Harleys in Hawaii,” “Cry About It Later,” “Tucked” and “Champagne Problems.” Perry unveiled her fifth studio set just days after giving birth to her first daughter, Daisy Dove, with fiancé Orlando Bloom. In the lead-up to Smile‘s release, Perry dropped the trippy animated video for “Never Really Over,” which takes viewers on a VR journey thro...
Gimme a Reason takes classic albums celebrating major anniversaries and breaks down song by song the reasons we still love them so many years later. This time we make like a rolling stone with Bob Dylan and Highway 61 Revisited. Highway 61 Revisited is unanimously considered not only one of Bob Dylan’s greatest albums, but also one of the most influential and enduring records of its genre and time. Released mere months after the highly controversial Bringing It All Back Home (whose focus on electric instrumentation and cryptic lyricism — punctuated by Dylan’s appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival — left many devotees feeling betrayed and incensed), the LP saw its creator delve further into those polarizing elements. The end result was a collection that brilliantly and bravely mixed ...
Ever since Baby Boy, Loui, Mick Antony, and Jody Fontaine formed AG Club and released their debut album Halfway Off the Porch earlier this year, the alternative hip-hop group has been quietly drumming up some underground buzz. Now, they’re gearing up for a proper breakthrough with “Memphis (Pt. 2)”, their new song featuring NLE Choppa and A$AP Ferg. “Memphis (Pt. 2)” is from AG Club’s forthcoming sophomore album, FYE, which is due out later this year. Apparently the group decided to reach out to a few of their favorite rappers to see if they were interested in collaborating on new music, but weren’t totally sure if anyone would be down. Needless to say, the group was over the moon when they found out both NLE Choppa and A$AP Ferb were game to jump on this single. “We had to get Choppa on t...
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has shared a lengthy and extremely heartfelt eulogy for Chadwick Boseman. The Black Panther star passed away Friday following a four-year battle with colon cancer. Coogler begins his tribute by recounting his first encounter with Boseman and how he was immediately compelled to accept Marvel’s offer to direct Black Panther. He later reminisces about Coogler’s dedication to his craft, including his steadfast desire to have his Black Panther character T’Challa speak with an African accent and to have Xhosa as the official language of Wakanda. He also credits Boseman for championing his Black Panther co-stars (“He would come to auditions for supporting roles, which is not common for lead actors in big budget movies”), and for being an inspiring presence...
This review is part of our Fantasia Festival 2020 coverage. The Pitch: On the surface, Lucky is a quirky slasher with an intriguing premise. May (Brea Grant) is attacked night after night by a masked man and no one in her life seems willing or able to help. The elevator pitch for this film must have been relatively simple: “What if you were being attacked and no one cared.” Yet hidden in this premise is a depressing truth and an unflinching look at the experience of dealing with trauma as a woman in America. Grant, who also wrote the script, goes all in on the metaphor, following it long past its logical fallacies to deliver a message that has been coded and hidden for far too long. Lucky may be heavy-handed, but by breaking the boundaries of believability, director Natasha Kermani deliver...
IDLES have never been afraid to do things their own way, and the British rockers’ unique spin on classics by bands like the Beatles and the Strokes is a perfect example. The two videos, along with a handful of others, were filmed while the group was recording at the legendary Abbey Road and provide a nice balance to the handful of tracks they’ve already released from the upcoming Ultra Mono (out Sept. 25 via Partisan Records). Of course — as with anything IDLES does — the covers are significantly different than their original versions. Fans of the original bands expecting to hear a familiar version of “Reptilia” or “Helter Skelter” may be sorely disappointed, but there’s no denying the creativity flowing through the new takes on them. For those looking for more IDLES origina...
