MAYHEM’s HELLHAMMER: ‘Black Metal, For Me, Is About Thinking For Yourself’

In a recent interview with Drumtalk, the video podcast by German drummer and videographer Philipp Koch, MAYHEM drummer Hellhammer (a.k.a. Jan Axel Blomberg) spoke about the concept of being “true” in black metal and how genre purists sometimes police subcultural boundaries in relation to the stylistic choices of black metal bands. “Well, this black metal attitude is really something that was invented by somebody else that really has no clue about anything, I would say,” Hellhammer said (see video below). “Black metal, for me, is about thinking for yourself — not following anything. And certainly not this following some idiot that says you have to do this to be true. I never did that, and I never stood behind that at all. I always was doing my own shit, thinkin...

Members of SLIPKNOT, LAMB OF GOD, VOLBEAT, ANTHRAX, EXODUS, OVERKILL, MACHINE HEAD, HATEBREED and TRIVIUM are among the musicians who have reacted to the passing of Riley Gale, lead singer of thrash metal band POWER TRIP, who has died at the age of 35. The Dallas, Texas-based group confirmed Riley‘s death in a statement on Tuesday (August 25). “It is with the greatest of sadness we must announce that our lead singer and brother Riley Gale passed away last night,” the band wrote. “Riley was a friend, a brother, a son. Riley was both a larger than life rock star and a humble and giving friend. “He touched so many lives through his lyrics and through his huge heart. He treated everyone he met as a friend and he always took care of his friends. “We will cele...

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh Was in ICU for COVID-19, Recovery Disturbed by TikTok Party House

Bryce Hall’s “Sway House” crew (photo via Instagram) and Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh (photo by Heather Kaplan) Buried in a story about how obnoxious young social media stars can be (surprise!) is a report that Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh apparently had a severe bout with COVID-19. Mothersbaugh’s wife, Anita, revealed the news to The Daily Mail, saying her 70-year-old husband came “close to death” while in the ICU in June. “This virus is no joke, I’ve experienced it first-hand,” she told the tabloid paper. “There was a week where my daughters thought he would die.” All this despite Devo having their own line of energy dome face shields. So why is this coming out now? Because rich youths are inconsiderate, privileged, jagoffs, that’s why. The Daily Mail’s story is ac...

Slayer’s Kerry King Is Working on a New Project: “I’ve Got More Than Two Records’ Worth of Music”

The legendary Slayer bid their farewell at the end of last year, but that doesn’t mean the individual members are done making music. Guitarist Kerry King has revealed that he has two albums’ worth of material for a new project. Slayer played their final show ever on November 30th after an extensive farewell tour, and the members have been relatively quiet since parting ways. However, in a new interview with Dean Guitars, with whom he has signed on as a signature artist, King revealed that he has been quite productive during the pandemic. “I’ve been very, very lucky with riffs in 2020,” said Kerry in a video interview posted on Dean Guitars’ YouTube channel. “Maybe because I can’t go anywhere, I don’t know, but riffs have certainly not been a problem.” He continued, “Looking forward into th...

The 25 Most Anticipated Movies of Fall 2020

“New year, new decade, new films, right?” That was January, back when we were still looking ahead at 2020 with blind optimism and ill-fated excitement. Sigh, hindsight is 20/20 they say, right? Who knew. At the time, we had 50 exciting new titles we were anticipating, most of which have since been either postponed, dumped to VOD, or relegated to a limbo state. It’s been an unnerving year for the film industry, to say the least. A year fraught with shutdowns, furloughs, layoffs, bankruptcies, and re-evaluations. All of that change has prompted a seismic shift in how everything’s run across the media landscape, and no one truly has a grip on things just yet. Odds are they won’t for quite some time. Because of this, anticipating anything right now — let alone anything in pop culture — seems l...

Unearth Is a Slow Burn Metaphor for Parasitic Capitalism: Fantasia Fest Review

This review is part of our Fantasia Festival 2020 coverage. The Pitch: Kathryn Dolan (Adrienne Barbeau) and George Lomack (Marc Blucas) head neighboring rural families struggling to make ends meet in a crumbling economy. Tensions arise when one family signs a contract allowing fracking on their land, but their fates intertwine when this decision inadvertently releases a parasite previously locked within the earth. John C. Lyons and Dorota Swies’ tale of economic horror presents a compelling if uneven picture of the devil’s bargains working class people are often forced to make in order to survive. Parallel Parasites: Unearth is a timely metaphor in the midst of a pandemic which has crippled the US economy. We meet both families when they’re tottering on the edge of financial ruin and ...

RZA Sells 50 Percent Of Catalog To Hipgnosis Songs

Source: Tim Mosenfelder / Getty RZA has certainly amassed a lengthy catalog over the past two decades and more, with a career that began before the global impact of The Wu-Tang Clan where he found fame. The Abbot of the Shaolin Swordsmen sold half of his classic catalog to Hipgnosis Records, joining other artists and producers by placing their catalog into the hands of the British music publishing company. Variety reports that RZA, born Robert Diggs, sold half of his copyright interest and writers share to Hipgnosis, which specializes in protecting and promoting the value of popular music as the industry pivots primarily towards the streaming market. Given that physical copies are largely niche items among collectors, monetizing music in the near future will have to find new pathways to su...

Along with a tongue in check jab at Doja Cat, the song is about all things positive that are most certainly black. “It was only right that we work with Pantone on this project, the color experts. This one’s from the heart, something the...
