At only 20 years old, rising indie electronic producer ford. has been fast at work making a name for himself after the 2018 release of his debut album, (The) Evening, through ODESZA‘s coveted Foreign Family Collective imprint. His work has drawn comparisons to the likes of Golden Features, Chet Porter and Kasbo, joining the ranks of the post-ODESZA producers known for their uniquely dreamy, percussion-driven rhythm structures. Just this year, ford. has managed to pen a Grammy-nominated remix of Mild Minds‘ “SWIM,” put out a collaborative EP with label-mates Sonn and Hanz, and even write another album. Though The Color of Nothing is not due until October 16th, today brings the release of its fourth—and final—single, “In My Eyes” featuring Verza...
With no light at the end of the tunnel of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, South by Southwest is officially going digital in 2021. Organizers of the iconic Austin, Texas music festival and media conference took to social media to share the news of the upcoming virtual fest and its 2021 dates. They also announced that they are working closely with the City of Austin and public health authorities for the return of the physical event, refraining from divulging potential dates. The inaugural digital version of SXSW will take place March 16th to 20th, 2021 and is set to feature “conference keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases networking, and more.” The 2020 in-person edition of SXSW was originally scheduled for March 13th to 22nd before organizers decided to ...
This is an opinion column. The thoughts and viewpoints expressed are those of the author, Alex Zaccaria. Zaccaria is the Co-Founder & CEO of Linktree. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the music industry. For many artists, it means that playing at clubs, concerts, and festivals in the U.S. likely won’t be an option for the foreseeable future. That’s a monumental shift in the way artists will think about their work and the performance experience. In an industry where artists get paid less than a cent per stream on platforms like Spotify, festival appearances, club contracts and touring are the main sources of income. Without touring, many rising musicians, DJs and producers must find new and creative ways to engage with their fan base and monetize their music. The importance of on...
“Quarantine Diaries” is an editorial series in which EDM.com invites members of the music community to contribute guest posts about how they’re coping with the pandemic. The goal of the series is to provide a platform for these individuals to share their own experiences and perspectives and ultimately inspire anyone experiencing pitfalls contrived by the impact of COVID-19. The thoughts and viewpoints expressed are those of the author, LUVK. This time has been scary and beautiful for all of us. So many lessons learned, and I’m so thankful to have a platform like EDM.com to share my thoughts. We artists are sensitive, and it’s nice to know that someone cares. Before the world shut down, I was on a high. I was gearing up to release my debut album, and my latest collection f...
Mariah Carey is opening up ahead of the release of her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. The superstar sat down with Oprah Winfrey for the talk-show host’s Apple TV+ series The Oprah Conversation to discuss the tome and its revelations. In a clip shared exclusively with Billboard, Winfrey asks whether the five-time Grammy winner was afraid to share some of the things she does in the book. “Yes, but it’s not because I was worried about what they would think,” Carey admits. “It’s because I never would have spoken a word about anybody in my life — and I try to be very fair — but people have drawn first blood with me, historically.” “When there are people connected to you as a person that achieves a certain level of success, you ar...

In the latest twist in Nirvana’s two-year-old copyright and trademark battle with designer Marc Jacobs over the use of the band’s smiley face design, a California graphic artist has stepped forward to say that he created the band’s logo and not Kurt Cobain. Robert Fisher, a freelance graphic designer based in Woodland Hills, filed a motion Sept. 13 to intervene in the ongoing federal litigation in the U.S. California Central District claiming to be the rightful creator and owner of the copyright design. Nirvana LLC has been in litigation with Jacobs since 2018, when they sued the designer for copyright infringement and trademark infringement alleging that he had used that Happy face design as part of his “Bootleg Redux Grunge” line without their permission. The band’s legal papers state Co...
A grand jury in Kentucky decided on Wednesday (Sept. 23) to indict one police officer with charges that do not address the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT who was killed in her Louisville, Ky. home on March 13. Former Louisville Detective Brett Hankison, who was fired in June, now faces three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, a Class D felony in the state of Kentucky “when, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, he wantonly engages in conduct which creates a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to another person,” according to state law. USA Today reported that while reading the charges, Judge Annie O’Connell said Hankison “wantonly shot a gun” into three apartm...
Over the past few weeks, a number of aging UK rockers have voiced their displeasure with the coronavirus quarantine — but perhaps no one more than Stone Roses singer Ian Brown. Brown unleashed a series of tweets about coronavirus conspiracies, claiming the pandemic, which he termed a “plandemic,” was “planned designed to make us digital slaves” and ranted about the validity of the pandemic. Brown’s previous tweets show that he’s against nearly every government precaution to stop the spread of COVID-19, including masks, lockdown and contact tracing. Brown also quoted 1984 author George Orwell, writing: “ALL tyrannies rule through fraud and force but once the FRAUD is exposed they must rely exclusively on FORCE George Orwell.” ALL tyrannies rule through fraud and force but onc...
YG dropped a video for “Out on Bail” today (Sept. 23), another new track off his upcoming MY LIFE 4HUNNID album. Showing clips of him in prison, surrounded by police cars and in a red Ferrari during a police chase, the visuals and lyrics bring fans back to his arrest back in January of this year on robbery charges. Before a scheduled appearance to pay tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, YG was taken into custody but then released on bail. [embedded content] “This arrest is one that caught YG completely off guard because there is no truth to them,” his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told TMZ. “YG has no idea what investigators are talking about and we have not been provided with any details … We are learning about this case through the media … YG has a performance ...
