Source: Kevin.Mazur/INACTIVE / Getty Snoop Dogg has earned the right to be a stern critic of his peers given the fact he is a living legend in the realm of Hip-Hop by all accounts. In a recent interview, the Doggfather rightfully gave praise to Eminem as a top-tier lyricist but says he doesn’t even crack his top 10. Sitting with The Breakfast Club, the D-O-Double-G spoke his mind as he’s known to do regarding his mentor and producer, Dr. Dre, who gave the Long Beach, Calif. OG his big break back in the early ’90s and broke the career of several other artists after his tenure with N.W.A. was in the rearview. When the conversation turned to Dr. Dre’s massive influence and legendary status as a producer, Snoop passionately championed his longtime friend by noting his ear for talent and how he...
Updates of Martika’s ‘Toy Soldiers’ and Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ also debut. Three remakes debut on Billboard‘s rock radio charts dated Aug. 1, joining a host of other updates of older material on various rock airplay rankings. Leading the way among debuting tracks is the late Chris Cornell‘s version of Guns N’ Roses‘ “Patience,” which bows at No. 16 on Mainstream Rock Songs and No. 36 on Alternative Airplay. Cornell appears on both charts posthumously for the first time, following his May 2017 death. He’d last hit Alternative Airplay with “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart,” which reached No. 18 in December 2015. On Mainstream Rock Songs, he had last charted in May-June 2016 with anoth...
First Country is a compilation of the best new country songs, videos and albums that dropped this week. Hear the latest from Dan + Shay, Rascal Flatts and more below. Dan + Shay, “I Should Probably Go To Bed” This gorgeous pop piano ballad, co-written by the CMA Awards’ reigning vocal duo, elevates the pair to new heights and should find success across several formats. Arranged and produced by Dan Smyers, the opening solo piano quickly swells to include strings and towards the end builds to a lovely crescendo before sliding back to solo piano. Shay Mooney’s boundless range still surprises as he hits notes that will probably haunt him when he has to sing the song live for decades to come. The harmonies and layered backing vocals recall the Beach Boys, Beatles and ELO. The first single from ...

Josh Homme dusted off a Them Crooked Vultures deep cut during Lollapalooza’s virtual festival on Thursday, playing a solo acoustic version of “Spinning in Daffodils.” The Queens of the Stone Age frontman, sporting a regal mustache and beard, tackled the track in a backyard-type setting, cranking out dusty, knotty riffs on his Gibson. Homme was introduced by Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell, whose former band Porno for Pyros reunited for the first time in over two decades to play a brief acoustic set. “Spinning in Daffodils” appears on Them Crooked Vulture’s 2009 debut LP, which features the core power trio of Homme, Dave Grohl, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. According to Setlist, they performed that song 71 times onstage; Homme previously played it twice. Lolla2020, which replace...
Hinds released their excellent new album The Prettiest Curse last month to help soundtrack our summer. While they were recording those songs, it turns out they were also rehearsing a cover of The Clash’s track “Spanish Bombs”. Now, they’ve released the studio version of that cover. Of course, “Spanish Bombs” comes from London Calling, The Clash’s iconic album and one of the most influential punk rock records of all time. While “Spanish Bombs” is a classic in its own right, the song has additional meaning for the members of Hinds because of its perspective on the Spanish Civil War — singer Joe Strummer was inspired to write about it after he heard about the Costa Brava hotel bombings on the radio at the time — as a piece of pop culture history. “The Clash were my mom’s forever favorite band...
Guns N’ Roses’ multi-platinum 2004 Greatest Hits compilation is set to receive its first-ever vinyl release. The double-LP set arrives September 25th. For many budding rockers in the early aughts (this writer included), Greatest Hits served as the entry point into Guns N’ Roses’ legendary discography. The tracklist spanned the band’s career at the time, and hit all the major checkpoints: the obligatory Appetite for Destruction mega-hits (“Welcome to the Jungle”, “Paradise City”, “Sweet Child ‘O Mine”), the best songs from Use Your Illusion I and II, the Lies ballad “Patience”, and even soundtrack contributions (the cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” from Interview with a Vampire). Making the vinyl version particularly collectible is the inclusion of “Shadow of Your Love”...
Alan Parker, Oscar-nominated British writer and filmmaker of Fame, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, The Commitments, and Midnight Express, passed away on Friday. He was 76. By the early ’70s, Parker had begun writing scripts and filming shorts. Michigan native Iggy Pop recruits soccer fans to support Detroit City FC in a new ad promoting the team’s crowdfunding equity campaign. “You’ve been saying ‘we’ for years,” the Stooges singer intones in the clip. “‘We are the pride of this city.’ ‘We don’t march to anyone’s drum but our own.’ ‘We are City ’til we die.’ Now it’s time to own up. Be an owner of Detroit City FC.” Detroit City launched the campaign on Thursday as a fundraising measure to help renovate their stadium, expand their staff, and create a reserve fund during the financial challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
