4 Big Tech CEOs Getting Heat From Congress on Competition

Four Big Tech CEOs — Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai of Google and Tim Cook of Apple — are set to answer for their companies’ practices before Congress as a House panel caps its yearlong investigation of market dominance in the industry. The four command corporations with gold-plated brands, millions or even billions of customers, and a combined value greater than the entire German economy. One of them is the world’s richest individual (Bezos); another is the fourth-ranked billionaire (Zuckerberg). Their industry has transformed society, linked people around the globe, mined and commercialized users’ personal data, and infuriated critics on both the left and right over speech. Critics question whether the companies, grown increasingly powerful after...

Slipknot’s Corey Taylor Recorded His Solo Debut Album While in Quarantine

For many years, journalists have been asking Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor not if but when he’s going to take the plunge and record a solo album. And until about a year-and-a-half ago, Taylor usually dismissed the question without giving it much more thought or insight. “But it kept coming up, for some reason, and so the more I started thinking about it, I was like, ‘Well, what the hell would it even sound like?’” Taylor tells SPIN over the phone. “I had kind of stockpiled these songs I’d written over the years, and I realized, ‘Oh, it would sound like these songs.’” If those asking were intentionally trying to subliminally plant the solo album idea in Taylor’s head, well, it worked. On Oct. 2, Roadrunner Records will release his first set of solo material, in the form of C...

10 Glorious Pre-Pandemic EDM Concert Moments for the Nostalgic

COVID-19 is like a disposable camera—it has no place in modern society, but it conjures nostalgic memories of old. iPhones are to disposable cameras what COVID-19 is to live music. The only difference, however, is that live music will eventually return. Until that happens, though, we can only look at the past through rose colored glasses and hope the hues don’t fade. To that end, a number of electronic music artists and labels have taken to social media in recent weeks to share old videos of intoxicating concert moments that are crystallized in time as mementos of a once-vibrant EDM zeitgest. However, these little vignettes should be emblematic not of a culture lost, but a culture with a stormproof foundation ready to be reborn. Here are 10 glorious pre-pandemic EDM concert moments f...

Every album is potentially our last album. We thought the last album was the last album, but there’s another one. So we just keep going. “I remember [late PURPL...

Ross Gordon of Cold Years’ ‘Songs That Inspired Paradise’ Playlist

With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. Here is Ross Gordon of rising Scottish rockers Cold Years: Our debut album, Paradise [Friday, Sept. 4, Inside Job/eOne], is a real progression for us as a band, and it talks a lot about escaping a life that you feel miserable in to pursue the things you really want and why you want them. It was a really strange concept for me to write on because I was in a really bad place, personally, at the time and this record just shines on the fact that something better is possible if you really work for it. Here are some songs that inspired this record, both lyrically and musically. Without them, it would not be what it is. The Bouncing Souls – ...

Source: Marla Aufmuth / Getty Politically interview opportunities can either go really well or be too hot to handle. One media personality had time for a Trump staffer. As spotted on Crooks And Liars, a recent episode of AM Joy proved once again why Black women should be celebrated and protected. Tiffany Cross, who was sitting in for regular host Joy Reid, put Bruce LeVell in his place quicker than a real estate agent.
