Don’t look now, but Trent Reznor is zeroing in on that EGOT. The Nine Inch Nails frontman already has an Academy Award and multiple Grammys to his name. Today, he received two Emmy nominations. Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross’ original score for HBO’s Watchmen received recognition in two categories: Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics (“The Way It Used To Be”) and Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series. If Reznor and Ross were to win in either category, they’d be just a Tony Award away from achieving EGOT status. Nine Inch Nails: The Musical, anyone? Beastie Boys and director Spike Jonze also picked up a pair of nominations for their documentary Beastie Boys Story. The film is nominated for both Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Writing for a ...
Blaqk Audio, the synth outfit made up of AFI members Davey Havok and Jade Puget, have announced a new album, Beneath the Black Palms. The entire LP will be released on August 21st, but the duo has made Side A, comprised of five songs, available today. Beneath the Black Palms marks the fifth album for Blaqk Audio, following up 2019’s Only Things We Love. Along with releasing the first five tracks on the album, the duo has unveiled a visualizer for the first single, “Hiss”. “Beneath the Black Palms is an affirmation, exaltation, and momentary illumination of rich, arcane shadows fortified by blinding and rapturous light,” stated Havok in a press release. “Musically a bird sister of Only Things We Love, our latest record more deeply traverses our EBM and futurepop roots while also extend...
Mick Jagger (photo by Jaime Fernandez), Lorde (photo by Ben Kaye), and Pearl Jam (photo by Lior Phillips). Over 50 artists, including The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Lorde, and Pearl Jam, have signed an open letter demanding that American politicians request permission before using songs for campaigns or events. The letter was organized and written by the Artist Rights Alliance. The group is asking that Democrats and Republicans “establish clear policies requiring campaigns to seek consent of featured recording artists, songwriters, and copyright owners before publicly using their music in a political or campaign setting.” Other signatories include Amanda Shires, B-52s, Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, Elvis Costello, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Jason Isbell, Linkin Park, Lykk...
#EmmysSoWhite? Not this year. On Tuesday morning, the Television Academy announced its nominations for the 2020 Emmys, delivering what’s reportedly their most diverse slate in history. As Variety points out, out of the 102 acting nominees this year, 35 of those slots went to Black performers, accounting for 34.3% of the total slate. For context, that’s an increase from the previous high of 27.7% in 2018, and especially last year’s 19.8%. It’s a refreshing change that aligns with the vision of Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma, who led off this morning’s event by saying, “2020 isn’t just about the global health crisis. This year we are also bearing witness to one of the greatest fights for social justice in history, and it is our duty to use this medium for change.” However,...
Korn has teamed up with YelaWolf to deliver a cover of The Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” In the new rendition, frontman Jonathan Davis trades off verses with YelaWolf as they take on the roles of “The Devil” and “Johnny” in the classic tale. “I’ve always said it, but country music is some of the darkest ever,” said Davis in a press statement. “Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and, of course, Charlie Daniels all turned pain into some really powerful music that sounded alive. ‘The Devil Went Down To Georgia’ is a classic story, and we wanted to release it now to help others in need.” All proceeds from the track will be donated to Awakening Youth, a nonpr...
Johnny Depp’s high-stakes libel case against a British tabloid that accused him of assaulting ex-wife Amber Heard wrapped up Tuesday (July 28) in a London court, with the star’s lawyer calling Heard “a compulsive liar” and claiming that Depp was the real victim of abuse in the relationship. The Pirates of the Caribbean star is suing News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, and the newspaper’s executive editor, Dan Wootton, at the High Court in London over an April 2018 article that called him a “wife-beater.” In closing arguments at the three-week trial, Depp’s lawyer, David Sherborne, said the actor strongly denied “this reputation-destroying, career-ending allegation.” “He has never hit a woman in his entire life — period, full stop, nada,” Sherborne said. What Is The Judge Deci...
Jessie Ware cuts right to the chase when talking about the imagery and inspiration behind her new album What’s Your Pleasure? “Oh my god, so much imagery. So much filth in my head!” the singer-songwriter tells the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen below). “I mean, in my head, I was somewhere between (legendary and scandalous nightclubs) Studio 54 and Berghain in Berlin. That’s where it was. It was intentionally cinematic… I was imagining it in the club, but in my perfect version of a club, that, you know, would be selling a dirty martini and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps (chips).” What’s Your Pleasure? marks the British star’s fourth studio album, and it debuted on the Official U.K. Albums Chart at No. 3 – her highest charting effort yet (and fourth top 10 in her homeland). War...
Cheers to “the new kingdom” — that’s Juliette‘s recipe for getting over a heartbreak. But is moving on to a brand-new beau the best remedy? During tonight’s Siesta Key, the Queen Bee grew even closer to Sam (who just happened to be an old friend of the young dad-to-be). “Alex’s been like texting me,” Sam told Juliette and Chloe. “A little shade that I’ve been kicking it with Juliette. He doesn’t want me to be hanging around her.” Fast-forward to Alyssa’s gender reveal bash — and Sam initiating a group outing (with Juliette’s support) on his family’s yacht (plus jet skis) the very same time as the Kompo bash. Madisson and Brandon were with Alyssa and company, while Juliette, Chloe, Kelsey a...
RL Grime has declared this a Sable Valley summer with a forthcoming compilation due out next month. The “UCLA” producer and label head dropped a teaser for Sable Valley Summer Vol. 1, a record set to featuring a trove of talent from the producer’s rapidly expanding imprint. The compilation’s teaser video features a car radio display that suggests the project is likely to be packed with at least fifteen tracks. As the van cruises through the desert terrain with a cooling system seemingly on its last leg, there’s clearly no room for subtlety here—Sable Valley is planning on bringing the heat. RL Grime’s Sable Valley imprint was established at the beginning of 2019 and has since grown into a tastemaker in the bass music space. With contrib...
After abandoning the 2020 iteration due to COVID-19 concerns earlier in the month of July, organizers of the beloved Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia music fest Imagine Music Festival have announced the event’s 2021 lineup. The three-day festival, which will go down September 17th to 19th, 2021, doubles as a “who’s who” of electronic music’s most notable figures. In addition to headliners Illenium, FISHER, Gryffin, and Kaskade, the latter of whom will also be performing at a daytime pool party, the lineup features Adventure Club, SNBRN, Walker & Royce, Malaa, Dabin, CloZee, and what should be a thunderous B2B set from Ghost Rydr, the collaborative pseudonym of bass house kingpins Ghastly and JOYRYDE. Fans can also look forward to the additi...
