Luna Share Kaleidoscopic Cover of Television’s ‘Marquee Moon’

Although the members of Luna are literally all over the world, it didn’t stop the band from collaborating on a new recording. And today (Aug. 21), they released their version of “Marquee Moon,” the 1977 title track off Television’s debut album. While they stay pretty true to the original, the video for the song is a bit of a kaleidoscopic trip. Luna explained covering “Marquee Moon” in a statement: “During the current pandemic, with Luna members spread around the globe, our former bassist Justin Harwood suggested that we record Television’s epic track ‘Marquee Moon.’ We recorded the song one instrument at a time in four different locations; Lee Wall recorded his drum track in Austin, Sean Eden tracked the guitars in San Francisco, Justin played the Fender bass in Auckland, New Zealand, and...

Tesla Wildly Reinvents the Biopic with an Inventive Ethan Hawke Performance: Review

This review originally ran as part of our Sundance 2020 coverage. The Pitch: By now, we all know the story of Nikola Tesla, spurned early 20th-century inventor and rival of Thomas Edison who invented alternating current, only to die penniless, his name largely lost to history until Christopher Nolan, Elon Musk, and the Fuck Yeah Science! corners of the Internet rehabilitated his unconventional genius. (Best not to mention the fact he was also a eugenicist, but that’s neither here nor there.) Now, one of America’s most under-appreciated minds has a full-throated biopic, with Ethan Hawke in the title role, charting his rags-to-riches-to-rags story. Of course, this being a Michael Almereyda joint, things get deeply weird. Welcome to Your Life: Make no mistake: Tesla ain’t your ...

Briston Maroney Teases Debut Album with New Single “Deep Sea Diver”: Stream

After releasing a string of EPs, including this year’s Miracle, Nashville songwriter Briston Maroney is ready to drop his full-length debut album. The effort is slated for arrival sometime in 2021 ,and as a preview, he’s sharing a new single called “Deep Sea Diver”. A freewheeling and folksy number, it finds Maroney struggling to pull himself out of a major rut. “Sick and tired of this old routine,” he laments early on, adding, “I’m a deep sea diver, I’m in too deep.” Maroney goes on to ponder his own “selfish pride” and “fear of rejection”, and whether they are keeping him from being an authentic and honest person. He also considers taking drugs to escape the present, but only momentarily. (Maroney might just be a genius for rhyming “Bowling Green”, “ketamine”, and “next week” all in one ...

Taylor Swift Supports Indie Record Stores with Free Signed Copies of folklore

Taylor Swift has surprised independent record stores around the country with signed copies of her new album folklore. Many shops reported unexpectedly receiving a package of 30 autographed CDs, and have been posting pictures with the hashtag #recordstorefolklore. folklore is a self-consciously “indie” effort, created with The National’s Aaron Dessner and featuring Bon Iver. It’s also the top-selling record of the year, released by one of the most famous people on the planet. With this gesture — hand-signing hundreds of CDs and shipping them all around the states — Swift may have given herself arthritis, but she’s also given these record stores her time and the power of her colossal celebrity. It worked — several stores reported selling out the whole stock of CDs in less than an h...

30 Years Ago, Alice in Chains and Jane’s Addiction Gave Rise to ’90s Alternative Rock

Alice in Chains’ Facelift, via Columbia / Jane’s Addiction’s Ritual de lo habitual, via Warner Bros. The rise of ’90s grunge and alternative rock can be traced back to a handful of significant moments, but one date in particular stands out: August 21st, 1990. On that same day, Alice in Chains and Jane’s Addiction released Facelift and Ritual de lo habitual, respectively, signaling a new shift toward textural, artful, heavy music. The albums parallel one another in myriad ways — from sonic congruencies to shared influences — a point best illustrated by mutual producer Dave Jerden, who worked on both LPs successively. The addictive ethereal vocals of Perry Farrell and the group’s eclectic blend of metal, post-punk, and funk had already caused a turning point in pop music wh...

Gorgon City Rework Sonny Fodera and Dom Dolla’s “Moving Blind”

In June, Sonny Fodera and Dom Dolla released their collaboration “Moving Blind,” which they had previously teased on their joint tour earlier this year. Just two months later, the pair have released the first official remix for their collab, whipped up by none other than Gorgon City. Gorgon City’s remix of “Moving Blind” is a class act reconstruction of the original, stripping away some of the more complex elements and refining the heart of the track. The English duo’s flair is present throughout, as their minimalistic approach has become unmistakable to longtime fans and critics alike. Listeners who already had “Moving It” on repeat will certainly welcome this rework, as it gives them a fresh version of the tune to rinse.  Fans sho...
